Surat Al-Baqarah - Part 39

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delves into Ayat 106 of the magnificent Surah Al Baqarah. The Abrogation of the Ayaat and the Wisdom behind it forms the core of this amazing lecture. Lees meer
Allah is describing the authenticity of the Book of Allah - the Qur'an to the Israelites who refuse to accept it citing that they already had the Tawrah as their religious scripture.
The Ayah declares that if Allah SWT chooses to abrogate a command in a certain Ayah while retaining the Ayah itself as a part of the Qur’an, or chooses to remove an Ayah, there is nothing objectionable in it. Allah SWT alone knows the Wisdom that lies in His choice. Allah SWT being Omnipotent and Omniscient possesses the authority to change His commandments as He likes.
What is Naskh? The meaning of Naskh in the case of commandments is removing the commandment and replacing it by another. Why change a command? Allah SWT says, “We bring forth [one] better than it or similar to it…” The scholars explained that better means better in terms of the benefits that it offers or something that is easier in implementation.
We are also acquainted with 5 different types of Naskh in the Qur'an and what went into it. Listen intently to fully comprehend the nuances of Abrogation.

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delves into Ayat 104 - 106 of the esteemed Surah Al Baqarah. Lees meer
Allah SWT revealed these Ayaat and forbade the believers from imitating the Jews in their intentional disrespect for the Prophet ﷺ by playing mischiefs in the meanings of Arabic words. The Ayah also announces dire punishment for whoever claims to be a believer and does not watch his speech, especially in the respect of the Prophet ﷺ.
A question might arise about why the Jews adopted such behavior? It was because of their jealousy and prejudice that the Prophet ﷺ had been chosen from the Arabs and not them. Listen intently for an in-depth analysis of the Ayats 104 105.
The Abrogation of the Ayaat and the Wisdom behind it forms the bone of discussion in Ayat 106 of Surah Al Baqarah. At first, the Muslims used to pray with their faces turned towards the Bayt Al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), later Allah SWT commanded them to turn towards the Ka’bah. But the Jews claimed that these changes were made by the Prophet ﷺ himself and not by Allah SWT. They argued that if everything that Allah revealed was good why should one command be replaced by another?
The purpose of such taunts and arguments was to sow the seed of doubt in the hearts of the Muslims. It was appropriately nullified by Allah SWT in the Ayats that follow.

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan begins his lecture with an explicit elaboration on Ayats 103 and 104 of the magnificent Surah Al Baqarah. Lees meer
Regarding Ayat 103, the Ustadh explains that If the jews had followed the principles of Islam, instead of following Shaytan and practising sorcery, they would have got its reward from Allah.
The Jews had believed in the Deen without a doubt, but they did not guard themselves against evil and did not take a detour from the things forbidden by Allah. Henceforth, Allah did not attach any importance to their belief and they were called the disbelievers and were abstained from the rewards and profits that Allah would have given them rather than what they tried to seek through sorcery.
Elucidating about Ayat number 104 of Surah Al Baqarah, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan says that during the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, some of the Bani Israel invented a new way to make fun of the Prophet ﷺ as is said in the Ayat,
"O you who believe, do not say Ra'ina, but say Unzurna, and listen. And for the unbelievers, there is a grievous punishment."
"Ra'ina" in Arabic means "be mindful of us", but in Hebrew, the word is a curse. The Arabs and Muslims, not knowing the double intention of the Bani Israel, also began to address the Prophet ﷺ with this word, much to the great glee of the Bani Israelis. Therefore, Allah (SWT) commands Muslims to address the Prophet ﷺ by using the word Unzurna. What did the word mean? Listen intently to find out. -

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delves into an exhaustive analysis of Ayat number 102 of Surah Al Baqarah. This Ayat was revealed at the time when black magic became popular and widely practiced, and this was during the time of Sulaiman (AS). many opinions have emanated about the reason for the revelation of this verse as is listed below: Lees meer
The Jews thought that Sulaiman (AS) was associated with sorcery and magic. The Quran made sure to deny such vile allegations against Sulaiman (AS).
These verses condemn the Jews for indulging in black magic themselves.
Seeing the results of black magic, ignorant people began to confuse its effects with the miracles of the Prophets AS which was unacceptable.Magic had become a source of misguidance, and Allah sent two angels, Harut and Marut, to inform people about its true nature and its different forms so that people could distinguish it from the miracles of the Prophets. The angels informed the people what they should be careful about and what they should avoid. Many other results can be deduced from this powerful Ayat and warrants an intent listen in order to fully fathom the gravity of the verse.

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delves into the Tafseer of Ayats 99 to 101 of Surah Al Baqarah. Lees meer
‘"And indeed We have sent down to you manifest Ayat, and none disbelieve in them but Fasiqun."
The Bani Israel were trying to make excuses because of the love for this world. In Ayat 99 we see that only the sinners disbelieve, as it blinds people. Sin is a blinder in the Deen. When we see a mistake in our lives, we should be very quick to exhibit gratitude to Allah (SWT) for opening our eyes and accept our mistakes as flaws.
"Is it not (the case) that every time they make a covenant, some party among them throw it aside? Nay! (the truth) is most of them believe not. And when there came to them a Messenger from Allah confirming what was with them, a party of those who were given the Scripture threw away the Book of Allah behind their backs as if they did not know!"
In Ayahs 100 and 101, we see that due to the disease of attachment to this world, we distance ourselves from Deen. If our hearts long for Deen, then Allah will remove Duniya from the heart and fill it with Deen. It's up to us what we choose to fill it with.

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delves into the mesmerising Tafseer of Ayats 96-98 of Surah Al Baqarah. Lees meer
Ayah 96 reiterates the fact that it is essential to not get completely involved in this world, and remember Allah (SWT) and the Hereafter come what may. Long Life won’t save one from accountability as this world is a prison for the believer and Paradise for the disbeliever. He who longs to meet Allah SWT is not afraid of death and if one is not prepared for death, they will wish that their death time is delayed. Allah SWT says that He knows what His servants are doing. The good and evil all is being noted down in our records and we will be compensated accordingly.
Ayat 97 has Allah SWT elaborating that whoever becomes an enemy of Angel Jibreel who is the messenger of the Glorious Quran will have taken all the messengers as enemies. Also, whoever believes in one Messenger must believe in all of the Messengers.
► People must love and remember Allah SWT in their hearts.
► People must remember Him with their tongues in solitude and in a crowd.
► People must do the deeds that please Him and abandon those which displease Him.

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delves into Ayahs 93 to 95 of the magnificent Surah Al Baqarah. Lees meer
In Ayat 93, "And (remember) when We took your covenant and We raised above you the Mount (saying), "Hold firmly to what We have given you and hear (Our Word). They said, "We have heard and disobeyed." And their hearts absorbed (the worship of) the calf because of their disbelief. Say: "Worst indeed is that which your faith enjoins on you if you are believers."
When Musa (AS) brought the Torah to the Bani Israel, they only chose to follow rulings as they pleased. This is when the angels lifted Mt. Sinai over their heads to warn them. Allah tells them to judge their faith by seeing the result of their Iman.
The Bani Israel claimed that Jannah is exclusively for them, and not anyone else. Allah SWT responds to this by saying that if they are certain that Jannah is for them, then they should wish for death. But they get terrified at the mention of death itself.
In Ayah 95, we gather that the people knew that if they had wished for death, Allah would have finished them off right away. They knew that they were just making excuses to not believe in the Prophet ﷺ, because they desired this world.

Man’s strong desire for worldly wealth.
Consequences of running after worldly wealth. The origin of the word Lahw used in the Surah is discussed at great length. Lahw essentially means entertainment of any form and it is this Lahw that keeps us busy and deviated from things that actually need our attention and interest. Our wealth and children should make us remember Allah and not be a source of distraction which distances us from Him.
Allah is telling us that we should go to the graves and remember where we are headed. This implies that the graves remind us of death. It will surely distance ourselves from the distractions of the world and make us turn to Allah with sincerity and humility.
When we wake up on the Day of Resurrection, we will be remorseful and regretful for what we had done in our worldly life without remembering about death for once. Allah says in this Surah that these people will soon come to know after they have been buried. Death is something both the believer and disbeliever have Yaqeen or certainty in. we will witness the hellfire staring at us as if it is going to pounce at us and then we will regain our senses on the harsh and tomentous reality waiting for us which Allah has warned us about time and time again in the Qur'an.
We have a lot more blessings or Na'eem than the companions of Allah's Messenger ﷺ. We will be held accountable for all this on the Judgment Day and need to face the plethora of questions that will be put forth our way. And yet the sad relity of today is that we as Muslims have started to compete with each other for blessings (Na'eem). We should fear that we will be asked about the more we have too.

When we say, “Bismillaahir-rahmaanir-rahiim”, we are acknowledging about Allah and His qualities, everything that He does is something that’s unique to Him. It cannot be confused with anyone else. The way Allah shows Mercy, guides, and the way Allah provides, the way Allah plans, the way Allah does anything that He does is unique to Him. It cannot be compared to anything and it is His unique mark. Everything Allah does -whether we understand it or not- has beauty in it. When we say “In the name of Allah”, instead of just mentioning Allah, just calling on Allah but actually invoking the name of Allah and actually by invoking the name, the uniqueness of Allah and the beauty of all of the qualities of Allah.
When we say “Bismillaahir-rahmaanir-rahiim”, we are actually asking Allah’s help. The Ustadh elaborates further on the details behind this statement.
A brief analysis is also done on the two most beloved Names of Allah - Ar Rahman and Ar Raheem.

Islam Brings Colours To The Youth
9 augustus 2016 · 14 min
Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delves into the topic of the youth and how when we talk about youth, we talk about the problem segment of our society. Lees meer
Youth has become synonymous with the problem and it seems like they are the weakest link in our community. But Allah highlights the youth and makes us realize that they are not our weakness. young people are our strength. And they will find their strength in the Word of Allah. When a young generation goes back to the book of Allah, the world changes. The map of the world changes.
There are ‘ulama, scholars, that have spent their entire life worshiping Allah, studying hadith, fiqh, Usul, Aqidah, tafsir, etc and have lived a life of learning and teaching. these are some of the most noble-dignified-symbols of Iman in the community, the elders. The older scholars of this Ummah are a treasure of this Ummah. Yet, the scholars of this Ummah, for fourteen centuries are learning about a bunch of young men who knew nothing, except there’s one God. These scholars wrote books, and articles, and papers, and reflections, on the lives of those not knowledgeable, not scholarly, no ijazah in any tajweed category of young men. Pause for a moment and understand the profundity of this! Knowledge is not something that is exclusive to the elders. It is the Iman in the heart of a Muslim that counts.
We paint an extreme picture that the Quran itself doesn’t paint. And our youth suffer because of this misconception. They feel that becoming serious about Islam means that we must let go of our existing life devoid of friends, a personality and much more. But the youth needs to realize that Islam is a beautiful religion that brings color and joy to our life.

The Human Tragedy - Khutbah By Nouman Ali Khan Lees meer
This Khutbah was given at the Bayyinah Masjid in Euless on 7/1/2016.
Nouman Ali Khan shares insights from the last passages of Surat Al-Haj, where, he explains, Allah gives a striking example that encapsulates the tragedy of humanity. Addressing people regardless of their faith, Allah says that those who call on anything other than Him cannot even create a single fly. Allah takes the analogy a step further by referring to the pagan ritual of offering food to idols who have neither the power nor the will to stop a tiny fly from snatching bits of that food and desecrating their temples. The passage closes with a thought-provoking axiom which, in a few simple words, sums up the futility of our petty human pursuits: âInherently weak are both the seeker and that which he seeksâ. Here Allah reminds us that whatever God, ism or philosophy we turn to instead of him will never give us strength. Unless we make Him our priority, unless we seek His satisfaction, we will continue to be distracted from the very essence of our purpose in this world and instead get caught up in an endless cycle of desire and indifference that leaves us feeling empty and unfulfilled. The solution: to appreciate Allah the way He alone deserves to be appreciated, to establish the prayer and give Zakat in pure acts of spiritual and material change, to hold on to Allah, who will be our protector and constant helper as we fulfill the heavy responsibility of representing our faith in the way we carry ourselves through life.

It emphasizes on the diseases of the heart where some people strictly adhere to observing rituals but are corrupt when it comes to worldly dealings.
This kind of behavior is destructive and we must seek to overcome them in Ramadan because the Taqwa (consciousness) of Allah must extend to all spheres of life. Ramadan must transform us not just spiritually, but also ethically. Otherwise, there is no larger purpose served in fasting when in reality our hearts are afflicted with an insatiable hunger and greed for wealth.

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan gives a mesmerizing lecture on how to make oneself ready to withstand challenges that come to the fore in our daily lives in the light of Islam. Lees meer
In Surah Al Kahf, ‘People of the “Cave” refers to the youth. These young men who hid in the cave were incessantly trying to protect their newfound identity of having embraced Islam and being a blessed Muslim. Their departure from the city was to protect their faith and the deep desire to live a life based on the belief of the Oneness of Allah SWT. They chose to sacrifice the luxuries of this life and the safeguarding of their beliefs. Their migration away from their families and society was a last resort to protect their faith.
In present times in America, we are not subject to the extreme circumstances faced by these youth. As Muslims in America, we have a constitutional right to practice our faith and live as Muslims. This comes with a price sometimes. We may have to make some sacrifices of time & wealth, but we are in no way in the same shoes as the youth mentioned above.
This story poses a very important reminder and lesson to impart to everyone who in the midst of all the luxuries and comforts of this world, should still be focused on finding the truth, promoting it and being ready to sacrifice many comforts of this life to promote, protect and practice their faith.

Ayah 83 talks about the Covenant that Allah took from the Children of Israel. They had promised that they will abide by those commands but they failed to do so and they intentionally and knowingly turned away from all of that.
Allah SWT had commanded them to worship Him and to associate none with Him in worship, just as He has commanded all of His creatures. This is the highest and most important right - Allah’s right to be worshipped alone without partners. Then comes the right of the parents. Then comes the rights of the relatives. Next, come the rights of the orphans who have no fathers to fend for them, and the Miskeen (the poor). This includes everyone who is weak and dependent.
Allah SWT also commanded that do Ehsaan to them. Ehsaan includes financial help, mentoring, helpful advice, and any other deeds of goodness.
Allah SWT also commands us to say good words to people, after He commanded them to be kind to them. He then emphasized the command to worship Him and the command to do good, ordaining the prayer and the Zakah.

Ramadan 2016 - Surat al-Baqarah - Day 28
18 juli 2016 · 1 uur 3 min
Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delves into Ayat 88 and describes one of the significant crimes done by the Israelites with regards to the Words of Allah. Lees meer
Allah SWT describes the insolence of the Children of Israel and their rebellion, defiance, and arrogance towards the Prophets AS. They were given the Tawrat that in which they distorted its meanings and defied its commands.
A number of Prophets were sent to the Children of Israel such as Prophets Musa, Haroon, Dhul-Kifl, Ilyas, Al-Yasah, Dawood, Suleiman, Uzair, Yunus, Zakaria, Yahya and Isa AS. Isa AS was the last Prophet to be sent to the Children of Israel. He was sent with miracles such as bringing the dead back to life, form the shape of birds from clay and blow life into them, heal the sick and foretell the Unseen. Allah SWT also aided him with Jibreel AS.
Yet, the Children of Israel became more defiant and envious of him. Hence, they treated the Prophets in the worst manner, rejecting some of them and killing some of them. All of this occurred because the Prophets used to command the Jews with what differed from their desires and opinions.
In Ayat number 88, “And they say, ‘Our heart is Ghulf,” meaning they are screened, covered or there is a stamp on them that they don’t comprehend.

The dead boy's other relatives came to the Prophet Musa AS and asked his help in tracing the boy's murderer. Musa AS instructed them to slaughter a cow, remove its tongue and place it on the corpse. This would reveal the murderer, he told them. They accused Musa AS of joking with them.
Allah the Almighty narrated: And (remember) when Musa said to his people: "Verily, Allah commands you that you slaughter a cow.
They said: "Do you make fun of us?"
He said: "I take Allah's Refuge from being among AlJahileen (the ignorants or the foolish)."
They said: "Call upon your Lord for us that He may make plain to us what it is!"
He said: "He says, 'Verily, it is a cow neither too old nor too young, but (it is) between the two conditions; so do what you are commanded."
They said: "Call upon your Lord for us to make plain to us its color."
He said: "He says, 'It is a yellow cow bright in its color, pleasing to the beholders.
They said: "Call upon your Lord for us to make plain to us what it is. Verily to us all cows are alike, and surely, if Allah wills, we will be guided."
He (Musa) said: "He says, 'It is a cow neither trained to till the soil nor water the fields, sound, having no other color except bright yellow.
They said: "Now you have brought the truth." So they slaughtered it though they were near to not doing it.
And (remember) when you killed a man and fell into a dispute among yourselves as to the crime. But Allah brought forth that which you were hiding. So We said: "Strike him (the dead man) with a piece of it (the cow)."
Thus Allah brings the dead to life and shows you His Ayat - proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations - so that we may understand.

Allah SWT had chosen one day of the week for the Children of Israel to do nothing other than worshiping Him. The Children of Israel, who were after the paltry riches of this world, breached the sanctity of this day (Sabbath). The Sabbath day was a test for them. As a punishment for what they had done, Allah SWT changed them from humans into monkeys.
Allah SWT says, “So We made this punishment an example…” meaning for the people of the village who violated the sanctity of the Sabbath and for the other villages. They were an example for those who lived during their time as well as a reminder for those to come, by preserving their story. “And a lesson for the Muttaqeen (the pious/Allah-conscious).” It means the torture, torment, and punishment that this village suffered as a result of indulging in Allah’s prohibitions and the deceitful ways that were adopted by them.
Hence, those who have Taqwa should be aware of their evil behavior, so that what occurred to this village does not befall them as well.
