Devon Hase: The Path Slopes Gently: Anupubbasikkhā and the Gradual Training
30 oktober 2026 · 49 min
(Insight Meditation Society - Retreat Center) The Buddha described awakening not as a leap to the summit but as a gradual training, one step laid down after another. Drawing on the image of walking (forest monks on tudong, pilgrims, and the cleared trails of these woods), this talk explores the anupubbasikkhā through generosity, ethics, meditation, and wisdom. With the Buddha’s teaching to Gaṇaka Moggallāna, the bird that carries only its wings, and poetry inspired by freedom, we reflect on how one thing lawfully leads to the next. We set up the conditions, and the dhamma does the rest. The arc of the path is long, but it bends toward freedom. Lees meer

Donald Rothberg: Compassion, Equanimity, and a Contemporary Vision of Our Practice
28 oktober 2026 · 53 min
(Spirit Rock Meditation Center) We begin with a general sense of how our practice is both grounded in tradition and responsive to the needs of our times, with reference to Thomas Merton’s similar perspective. Sharing images from his recent teaching and travels throughout the talk, Donald focuses initially on the traditional sense of three forms of training—in wisdom and discernment, meditation (especially concentration, insight, and heart practices), and ethical practice. We review the most central teaching of the Buddha, about dukkha (understood in its most important meaning as reactivity) and the end of dukkha, and point to practice as involving both deep inner work and skillful outward action, with the key in both contexts being “appropriate response.” We then examine the nature of compassion and how to be skillful in our response to the “pain of the world,” connecting compassion and the figure of the bodhisattva with equanimity. Donald Rothberg: Guided Meditation on Equanimity and Compassion
28 oktober 2026 · 32 min
(Spirit Rock Meditation Center) After a short introduction to how we develop equanimity and compassion in our practice, the main themes of this session (of both meditation and the talk), we begin with settling and cultivating concentration. Then there is a period of mindfulness, followed by two practices developing compassion, one with phrases and one the short self-compassion practice developed by Kristen Neff. Lees meer

Devon Hase: Come and See: The Beauty of the Dhamma (Retreat at Spirit Rock)
18 oktober 2026 · 50 min
(Spirit Rock Meditation Center) The second refuge invites us into intimacy with truth: something alive, immediate, and here for us whenever we remember to look. Using the ancient chant of the Dhamma’s qualities (here and now, timeless, inviting us to come and see, leading inward), this talk explores awareness as a refuge that can hold even chronic pain and old grief with both equanimity and compassion. Drawing on the suttas, Thai Forest masters, and poets like John O’Donohue and Ada Limón, we turn to kalyāṇa, the Pali word for the Dhamma as beautiful in the beginning, middle, and end. Beauty shows up in our practice, our actions, and our spiritual friendships, and it can become a companion and guide on the path home. Lees meer

Devon Hase: Whatever Arises, Ceases: Impermanence from Stardust to This Breath (Retreat at Spirit Rock)
15 oktober 2026 · 45 min
(Spirit Rock Meditation Center) At the moment of his awakening, Kondañña saw that whatever arises also passes away. This talk explores impermanence at three scales: the vast span of geologic and cosmic time, the arc of our own aging and mortality, and the moment-to-moment flicker of experience. Drawing on the suttas, poetry, and stories from practice, we look at how assuming permanence shapes our lives, and how seeing through it can open into awe, gratitude, and the freedom of letting go. Amma Thanasanti: The Hidden Intelligence of Anger
15 oktober 2026 · 53 min
(Insight Meditation Community of Berkeley) A talk on The Hidden Intelligence of Anger - What is your anger trying to tell you? Anger may look like one thing, but it can arise from very different conditions. Anger rooted in violated boundaries is communicating something different from anger arising from grief, fear, shame, attachment wounds, injustice, or the frustration of not getting what we want. Because the conditions are different, each calls for a different response—and each can open into a different possibility for freedom. Rather than simply managing anger, expressing it, or trying to let it go, this talk explores what becomes possible when we learn to listen more precisely. What is this anger responding to? What is it protecting? What is it asking us to understand? Through meditation, teaching, and inquiry, we’ll explore anger as a doorway into greater discernment, choice, and freedom. Lees meer
