Episode 20 - Colic in babies | Kate & Baby Isla
14 april 2022 · 26 min
Colic in babies is enough to bring on inconsolable crying in new parents. You don’t know what to do or how to stop it or why your baby is so unhappy. It’s one of the most frustrating parts of caring for a newborn. Lees meer
In this week’s episode of Sense by Meg Faure, Meg chats to first-time mum Kate. Kate was previously a guest on episode 16 Finding your Mum Tribe with Cassidy Mason. This week, she joins Meg with 10-week-old baby Isla to chat about some of the wins and challenges of the week.
Colic is a big subject throughout the episode. Kate has questions about why it happens and what they can do about it. She mentions that, like a lot of new parents, she and her partner brace themselves for an hour+ of fussiness and non-stop crying. Meg reassures Kate that lots of parent resign themselves to the torture of colic but goes on to explain that colic is in fact a misnomer.
The word ‘colic’ means abdominal discomfort. But up to 95% of babies aren’t actually experiencing abdominal discomfort but they are actually overstimulated and struggling to settle themselves. Much like we feel after a long day at work, errands, dinner, chores, exercise – except that our brains have matured enough to learn how to relax at the end of a day. Babies, on the other hand, take in so much of our busy world but their brains are not mature enough to process everything without becoming overloaded.
Meg shares some tips for Kate including following awake times and spacing out feeds around bedtime. She also gives Kate some tips on calming strategies for the late afternoon and she also shares her favourite way to calm a crying baby.
Kate also has some questions around activities and healthy stimulation. She expresses she struggles to find things to do when Isla is awake and in a calm alert state in the afternoons. Meg shares some great ideas for keeping your baby stimulated. She suggested things like going for a walk in nature, spending time on a play mat or spending 10 minutes on a short peek-a-bo…

Lees meer
In this week’s episode of SENSE by Meg Faure, Meg sits down with her co-author on the best-selling Weaning Sense book, Kath Megaw.
Kath is a clinical paediatric dietician, the founder of Nutripaeds, and author of several books. She has four medical degrees and is an authoritative voice on nutrition in babies and children. Kath and Meg have an enlightening chat about some of the controversy around weaning.
Kath answers the biggest question around weaning and that is when is it time to start solids? She explains WHO recommendations and the impact of food security in developing countries. Kath goes onto to explain when to start weaning within this context and the context of developed countries.
Meg and Kath also talk about Baby Led Weaning or BLW and how it fits into the Weaning Sense approach to weaning. Kath explains BLW as a developmental stage that babies at 4 months old are not quite ready for but will grow into as the months go by.
Meg and Kath go on to talk about first food trends that was a deciding factor in what we started feeding our babies in the 70s, 80/90s and now. They discuss the trend towards replicating the nutritional value of breast milk as good first food choices – seasonal fruit & vegetables with healthy fats such as avo. They also talk about the latest research in allergens and how introducing proteins sooner reduces the chance of developing allergies.
Meg and Kath also talk about the ‘two bowl’ approach to weaning and offer some great tips for avoiding picky eating, providing choice and variety and the importance of (relaxed) persistence when it comes to offering our babies new foods.

Marguerite also asks Meg about the dreaded 17 week sleep regression. Meg shares some insights into sleep regression and gives Marguerite the advice & tips to not over respond to night waking during this stage.
As Occupational Therapists, Meg and Marguerite also talk about some of Hazel’s developments, what activities she’s enjoying. Meg shares her insights into the significant obsession parents can develop about reaching milestones. She discusses what’s normal and how to take a measured approach to milestones.
