  1. 300: Big BOAT Interview: How Ocean Bottle's co-founder went from superyacht deckhand to building a global ocean plastic clean-up operation

    26 oktober 2026 · 27 min

    Afspelen
Alternative propulsion and energy-efficient onboard systems tend to dominate the sustainability conversation in the superyacht industry – but while these remain vital, how often do we stop to consider the industry's own hand in ocean plastic pollution? In this Big BOAT Interview, BOAT International's commercial content editor Hannah Rankine sits down with Will Pearson, co-founder of Ocean Bottle, the B Corp-certified reusable drinkware brand that funds the collection of ocean-bound plastic with every purchase while supporting local communities along the way. Lees meer

Pearson founded Ocean Bottle at just 23 years old, but the idea was born years earlier while working on board a superyacht, where he witnessed severe ocean plastic pollution first-hand - some of it contributed by the very yacht he worked on. In this conversation, he traces that journey from the deck to building a global plastic collection operation, and shares his view on what the superyacht industry can do to lessen its plastic footprint and safeguard the ocean playground it depends on.

This is an episode of BOAT Radio, recorded live from the BOAT Lounge at the Monaco Yacht Show. Lees meer

SEA Index® is an independent, data-driven benchmark that measures and compares the CO₂ intensity of a yacht's propulsion and auxiliary energy systems. Developed by the Yacht Club de Monaco and independently verified by Lloyd's Register, the methodology is aligned with the International Maritime Organisation's energy-efficiency principles and provides owners with a transparent, objective way to understand and improve the environmental performance of their vessels. SEA Index also includes an Air Quality Certification, developed with AtmoSud, which assesses nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), providing an independently verified evaluation of key atmospheric pollutants. Today, SEA Index is recognised by more than 26 ports and marinas worldwide and covers both superyachts and recreational vessels from 10 metres LOA and above, including production catamarans up to 35 metres LOA.

In this discussion, we'll speak with M. Bernard d'Alessandri, President of SEA Index - Superyacht Eco Association & Yacht Club de Monaco General Secretary about how the benchmark works, what it reveals about a yacht's energy and emissions performance, and why transparency, comparability and independent verification are becoming increasingly important for the future of yachting. We’ll also hear from the owner of 52m M/Y Oras about why SEA Index is important from an owner’s perspective, improving their yacht’s charter potential, helping them stay ahead of tightening maritime emissions laws and unlocking exclusive maritime perks such as priority berths and premium access to partner ports.

At the heart of Captain Arctic is co-founder Sophie Galvagnon, a French-Swedish explorer who became the world’s youngest female Arctic captain at the age of 26. Galvagnon will reveal what it is like to build a boat you actually captain and how her experience in the polar regions shaped the vessel.

Meanwhile, Pelorus co-founder Jimmy Carroll will explain why, as Central Agent for Captain Arctic, Pelorus is answering the call for greener, more immersive charters – and how the yacht fits into its wider approach to expedition travel.
