Episode 87 - A Goddess Story
3 februari 2021 · 19 min
This month we are celebrating the Goddess Brigid and her feast day of Imbolc by releasing a month filled with Goddess stories. Lees meer
The first is one of the most ambiguous ones… as there are no written sources to find much about the Goddess who gave her name to the people we know as the Tuath de Dannan - the people of the Goddess Danu. Those that later became known as the “sidh”, the “good people”, and as time went by the “faeries”.
More and more is forgotten about our old customs, language, and beliefs. And when you look for 'Danu' now, you might only find a line in the 12th-century book, An Leabhar Gabhala (the book of Invasions) that says "she is the Mother Goddess". If her stories were wiped out on purpose, then we have to try and stitch them back and re-knit the fabric of our lost traditions.
In this episode, Sorcha relates what she does know about this mother goddess. And like the rivers and waters that took her name, all things flow from her. We pay tribute to the mother of all the Gods and Goddesses and when we praise any Goddess, and we pay homage to her memory. We will not forget their names.

Episode 85 - The Champion's Portion
27 januari 2021 · 29 min
Part-two of this two-part story ends with this episode, ‘The Champions Portion’. Lees meer
Although one of the most famous heroes of Irish Myth, Cúchulainn was not always granted the title of Ulsters Champion. To be a champion of the people took more than sheer strength and brilliance, you had to be the champion of the people, loyal and true to your word in every way.
Cúchulainn’s championship is contested by his fierce cousin Conal Cearnach, the Battle Winer, and the well-meaning, (but often in the way) Lóegaire Búadach, the victorious. These two champions think they ought to be names the champion of Ulster.
Despite failing miserably at overcoming Cúchulainn in any of the series of tests that they face to come up with a winner, the two men stay stubbornly defiant. Until the intervention of a tall dark stranger, and the beheading test...

Episode 84 - Bricrius Feast - Post Show Chats
25 januari 2021 · 19 min
This post show chat was recorded in early January while Aron and Srocha were still in a bubble after being home in Cork for the Holidays. We missed the feastivities but enjoyed looking back over this great story full of feasts and the glorious fighting. Lees meer
The first part this two parter episode this deals with Bichru of the Bitter tongue, and his attempt to host a feast. This section of the story is also known as ‘Bichru’s Feast’ in Richard Marsh's book 'Irish King and Hero Tales'. As his title suggests he is a troublemaker and prefers to cause strife amongst his friends and kinsmen than enjoy their company modestly. After all, he can take no enjoyment from food, of sex, or even drink… so he has to amuse himself somehow.
After inviting all the heroes of the Crebh Rua to his feasting hall, he has a few tricks up his sleeve to ensure this will be a memorable night. He has to be one of our favorite tricksters in Irish Myth, but he might have bitten off more than he can chew in this episode…
Next week we will hear the end of the ‘Champions Portion’ and find out who is the rightful champion of Ulster.

Episode 82 - The Death Of Conal Cearnach - Post Show Chats
17 januari 2021 · 47 min
Ending our death series on a lighter note with the post show chat we had about the death of Conall Cearnach, the second greatest hero of Ulster. Lees meer
Our holiday bubble came to a sudden end early in January, and just before Sorcha returned home to Dublin, we had a chance to chat about the death of this great hero. We also enjoyed the deepening of her Cork accent and generally shite talked about how enjoyable the death series was for us and why it’s important to look back on these set of stories.
Conall Cearnach was the runner-up to his younger cousin, Cúchulainn, and he was spectacular in his own way, so we had loads to talk about. Crooked necked and touched with an otherworldly beauty, he was vicious in battle and boasted that he never went to bed without the severed head of a Connaughtman under his knee.
But what happens to a hero who is unbeatable? Who is so fierce and so terrifying that he wins all his battles? What happens when he grows old, and slow, and sick? What were the honour systems in place in that society and what were the deeper meanings to these stories.
Conall Cearnach found his own way to get the death he always wanted, and the death series has come to a dramatic end with his demise. He and Cúchulainn will be back in action in the next episode however, as we tell ‘Bichru’s Feast’.

Episode 81 - Death Of Conal Cearnach

Ending our death series on a lighter note (can you have a lighter note in a Death series?) is the story of Conall Cearnach, the second greatest hero of Ulster. Lees meer
Always the runner-up to his younger cousin, Cúchulainn, Conall was spectacular in his own way.
If that hero is Conall Cearnach, he finds a way to get the death he always wanted.

Episode 80 - The Death of CuChulainn - Post Show Chats
12 januari 2021 · 26 min
The penultimate story in our Death Series is the death of one of the greatest of all heroes: Cúchulainn. This story and discussion was recorded in early 2020, though we thought the better of releasing tales of glorious death at the time… turns out now is as good a time as any. Lees meer
Cúchulainn’s death was long foretold. From the moment he took up arms as a boy, he knew that his life would be brief, and full of pain. But he knew that his story would stay on the lips of storytellers until the end of time, and that seemed a good bargain to a young boy.
Here, he faces his final battle, still reaching for glory.

Third in our Death Series is the strange and prolonged death of Conchubar Mac Nessa, King of Ulster, and in this episode we chat about the connection he had with the one and only Jesus Christ. Timely too seeing as its just gone Christmas and the celebration of the birth of the same man… but this episode is dedicated to a boy born on the 26th of December 2020, and that boys name is Anthony Nahual Hegarty, our brothers first born child. Lees meer
Now back to th mythology... Conchubar is a wily king and remembered as a great leader. As well as sound judgement, he was a man of great beauty, and great vanity. Over the years, we’ve come to wonder at his wonderful reputation, but there’s no doubt that he left a lasting legacy. At some time in the retelling of this tale, Concubar’s birth and death was linked with another mythic figure, from far away, in the East.

The first of our Death Series to round out what has been a hell of a year! Lees meer
Death Stories are their own genre in Irish mythology and the last chance anyone has at what our ancestors thought of as immortality: to be talked about, as long as there were people to talk about you and storytellers to tell your tale.
Cú Roi Mac Daire is a powerful, enigmatic figure around the fringes of the Ulster Cycle. A mysterious warrior and wielder of magic, he was sometimes friendly to the Ulaid and sometimes their foe.
Cú Roi was said to have dedicated his life to searching for Fíor Fir: the Truth that lies in the heart of man. But he might have been better served had he not ignored Fíor Mná, for it was the truth in the heart of woman that he overlooked in the end.

Episode 70 - 6th Birthday Post Show Live Chat Special
8 december 2020 · 1 uur 4 min
We are 6 years old and we are having a party online! Lees meer
Join us to chat about the Táin on Sunday 6th December at 7pm.
We will be talking about the latest episodes where we released a special edition Táin recording. Check it out if you missed it. Here we will be going LIVE ON YOUTUBE to chat about this epic myth and all the madness of 2020.
Sorcha read somewhere once upon a time, that An Táin Bó Culaigne was the tale that should be told after dark and in the dark half of the year. So, six years ago, in a small pub in Dublin we started telling the Táin. There were about 10 people there at the time. Each week the numbers grew and grew, and at the end of the tale, there were people crammed in, and listening from the stairwell outside the room.
For the past 6 years, every year we celebrated by telling the Táin as we did the very first time at a live show. This one never gets old either. Each year we found a new way to tell it, more details to enhance, or perspectives to examine. It’s an epic, so it was possibly told in the dark months to last the entire winter.
Over the years we worked on a number of versions of this story, and ‘The Shadows of the Táin’ was the final script we came up with and premiered in Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin in collaboration with the Shadow Puppetry of ‘Flight of Fancy’. We toured this show in the last couple of years, and have had plans of performing it live again and again… but without live venues open, we decided to do something different with this script.
The last three episodes of the Podcast was that something different.Sorcha is narrating this on her own this time, and Rurai O'Shea (the first musician we ever collaborated with) took this reading and added the soundscape and music to it as his lockdown project. And aren't we lucky to be able to collaborate with such an artist.

This year we are 6 years old as a group. And every year we celebrated by telling the Táin again, and each year we found a new way to tell it, or more details to enhance, or aspects to leave out as the case may be. It’s an epic, so it was possibly told in the winter to last the entire winter.
We worked on a number of versions of this story, and ‘The Shadows of the Táin’ was the final script we came up with and premiered in Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin in collaboration with the Shadow Puppetry of ‘Flight of Fancy’. We toured this show over the years, and have had plans of performing it live again and again… but without live venues open, we decided to do something different with this script. This is something different.
Sorcha is narrating this on her own this time, and Rurai O'Shea (the first musician we ever collaborated with) took this reading and added the soundscape and music to it as his lockdown project. And aren't we lucky to be able to collaborate with such an artist.

27 mei 2020 · 1 uur 8 min
Welcome to Season 1 and Episode 1 of Candlelit Tales for kids. We tell stories and we made them with kids in mind. We focus on Irish myth and folktales and this is the story, “Fionn the salmon and the Dragon” is our version of two well-known stories of the Fianna. The boyhood deeds of Fionn Mac Coole, catching the Salmon of Knowledge and his eventual arrival to Tara where he became the leader of the Fianna after defeating the Dragon Ailíl. Lees meer
Fionn was the son of Coole. He grew up in the Slieve Bloom mountains in Ireland in secret. His aunt and her wife trained him to be a great warrior. Until he went with a group of poets to learn more about the world. He soon went to work for the wisest man in Ireland, Finnigus, who was fishing for the Salmon of Knowledge. When young Fionn caught the fish however, he burnt his thumb on the skin of it, gaining all the wisdom of this world and the next. With the help of this wisdom, he soon went to Tara and defeated the fire breathing dragon Ailíl and became the leader of the Fianna.
