Trailer | S07 Ep02 | Justin Brierley | Are We Seeing a Rebirth of Faith?
1 mei 2024 · 1 min
I think sometimes the problem is that the Christian church can be answering the questions of 20 years ago, you know, basically responding to the new atheists and asking: Do you have any evidence that God exists? And you go off and have a, you know, an interesting philosophical, scientific debate. But actually, that's not...I think the questions that most people in the secular culture are asking right now about God. They're more asking: How do I make sense of life? How do I...give me a reason for getting out of bed in the morning. Why do I feel so depressed? So I think where we could learn from that, in a sense is that actually we need to be answering the question that people are actually asking. We could take a lesson from sort of looking at what the existential issues are actually. Lees meer

Trailer | S07 Ep01 | Ann Voskamp | Is God Still Good When Tragedy Happens?
23 april 2024 · 1 min
If you pick up a pen every day and you write down what you're grateful for, when you are in crisis, your soul will have a memory of what it is supposed to do. How can I give thanks to God in the midst of this valley and trial? Because ultimately what we need...can we position our soul to remember the truth? God is always good and I am always loved. Because when difficult things happen and the waves hit us, what the enemy of our souls can hiss: Is God really good now? Is God really kind? Does God really love you when this tragedy happens twice in your life? When you have a memory muscle, a gratitude muscle that knows that in crisis I keep giving thanks, what that means is that gratitude muscle will mean that you are strong in joy. And that if you let...don't let anything go ahead and steal your joy, because the joy of the Lord is your what? Your strength. So gratitude and joy are intimately connected right there at the Lord's Supper.

Trailer | S06 Ep12 | Dave & Diane Toycen | A Journey Through Grief
9 april 2024 · 1 min
In spite of the early loss of our daughter's life, somehow God was present there, and it was always amazing to me. Something would come up that would remind me of that and somehow get me over. In the end, death doesn't win. Obviously, it's a statement of faith. There's a lot of scientists that would say they can't prove that, but I think for those of us who have walked this trail of spirituality and having experiences of various kinds, there's good evidence that we're not making it up, that something's really happening that's going to shape our lives and give us the energy and the faith to walk through these hard situations and see the light rather than just the darkness.

Listen to Dave and Diane Toycen being interviewed by seasoned journalist and long-time friend Lorna Dueck. There are many interesting lessons on global and community care we could learn from Dave and Diane, but in this intimate interview, they talk about their journey of grief. They said their final goodbye to their only daughter Jocelyn in 2022 and to their daughter-in-law Linda in 2015. Trailer | S06 Ep11 | Karen Kingsbury | A Best-Selling Author/Filmmaker Shares Her Faith Journey
2 april 2024 · 1 min
I went to a Christian bookstore, and I bought a Bible and an exhaustive Concordance and went back out to my car. And before I could get out of the parking lot, I just sat there before I even turned on the engine and looked up some things that I thought should be there and they weren't there. And I could hear God say, you can fall away with all your man-made beliefs, or you can grab onto me and never let go. And I grabbed on that day. And so to me, do I see God at work in what I write and in the things that my career, the places where I've gone as an author, as a speaker, now as a filmmaker? 100%, it's all Him. I really feel strongly, and I believe I write for Him, through Him, by His power and for His glory. So, I see miracles constantly.

Trailer | S06 Ep08 | Connie Phillipson | When God Calls Will You Hear?
4 maart 2024 · 1 min
We are called to cultivate listening communities in a society that does not listen well and that does not fear God. I believe we must speak confidently, faithfully, boldly, and courageously. If I stand up in my congregation and they don't trust that I believe what I'm saying, that I am who I say I am, that I am a Christian, then the appeals to emotion, the appeals even to the Word will probably fall on doubting ears and heart. I never take that trust for granted and I work to earn it every single day of my life.

Trailer | S06 Ep07 | Jeff Kloha | Does the Bible Influence Today's Culture?
27 februari 2024 · 1 min
I think a very common, I would say, misperception is that the Bible has been a source of even evil in the world. People think it's done harm in the world. And what we show is that some very core elements of our culture and society come from the Bible. Human rights, for example, the idea that all people are created in the image of God, right, endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, right, comes from our foundational documents in our country, but it's based on Genesis 1 and 2, and that all people are created in the image of God and therefore of value and have rights and dignity. So that wouldn't exist without the Bible. That's a unique contribution of the Bible. The healthcare was invented by Christians, the idea that all people, again, have value, they should be cared for. You know, Jesus says, when I was sick, you cared for me. The whole idea of hospitals and the practice of hospitals and healthcare comes from the Bible. Lees meer

To be a true reflection of God now, a true mirror, an image bearer of God now, in the world now, and to actually share in His purpose as an ambassador, a reflection of God. 2 Corinthians 5: 17 - 21 is a key Scripture in this book that you're brand new, you're not sort of new, you're not that old self, you don't define yourself by that old man, that old nature, that old sin. You have a brand-new nature, you're a brand-new person in Christ, and you have, you get to share in His purpose and walk in His authority right now. And that's the clarion call in this book, is that everything that was lost in the garden has been found in Jesus. Will you take it up? Will you live out of the truth of all that's been found for you, and live with meaning and purpose and power in your life? Because that's where you find your true identity. It's all found in Jesus.

Trailer | S06 Ep05 | Max Jeganathan | Happiness vs Joy
13 februari 2024 · 1 min
It's not that the quest of happiness will fail. It's just that you're missing out on a deeper, qualitatively richer version of happiness if you try and do it in your own strength. And so that's where we talk about, I think, point to Scripture where the Bible actually doesn't say that much about happiness. It's not actually that interested in our happiness. What it says a lot about is joy. And here's where we talk about the one thing that you could say, for almost every ideal and pursuit of the modern mind, and kind of the modern, intelligent, educated person is that what the Bible offers is not something that's just quantitatively different. So, it's not saying: Come to Jesus and you'll be more happy. It's saying: Come to Jesus, and you'll have something that's qualitatively better than happiness. Christian joy just holds. It holds kind of above the storms, regardless of what's happening. So, there is a level of lasting certainty and majesty to what the Bible offers, and joy is one good example as opposed to human generated happiness.

Listen to Max Jeganathan, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Public Christianity and Adjunct Speaker for the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics being interviewed by seasoned journalist Lorna Dueck. Max talk abouts how happiness comes and goes but Christian joy holds regardless of what's happening. He describes the Bible as a theological document/declaration, not a political one. "It's the way God communicates to us about who He is and who we are, and how He wants us to relate to Him and to one another." he says. Max also talks about sin being something that we are, that it's not based on performance. "Sin is actually an intrinsic brokenness, that explains a break in relationship with God, a relationship that we were all made for." Trailer | S06 Ep04 | Richard Topping | Are We Asking God the Right Questions?
6 februari 2024 · 1 min
Providence enables us to trust that history is headed somewhere, might not today be visible to sight. but faith will give way to sight if you wait on God. It's about trusting in promises that have yet to come true and I've always wondered about the truth character of a promise. It's true because you trust the person who made it but it isn't true as a fact yet. And so you're waiting for its fulfillment, but you know enough to trust the promise maker to wait on a fulfillment. And I think that's where John, you know, it's unbelief to give up that hope. You know, we are as one American preacher says: We're prisoners of hope. We're obliged to hope in a very good way to see how the grace of God will emerge here too.

Trailer | S06 Ep03 | Carolyn Arends | What Is God Trying to Say to You Right Now?
30 januari 2024 · 1 min
The biggest thing for me because it's what I need the most and then I hope it helps other people, is just to wake up to all the ways God is making overtures to us, whispering to us, reaching out to us. And so you know, I think that the big three of goodness and beauty and truth...these you know, that old-fashioned idea that there's these three transcendentals and they're like little radar pings from the God of the universe and they ping in our soul. Any chance that I can in any kind of writing or communication go: Look there's something beautiful! or Look here's something true! or Look at the possibility for goodness that still exists in image bearers, people made in the image of God! That's all part of this quest to just pay attention, wake up, get the message.

Trailer | S06 Ep02 | Danny Zacharias | What Does the Decolonization of Faith Involve?
23 januari 2024 · 1 min
Again, I would reiterate, I love the work of the translation of the Scriptures into people's language. Because that's part of, frankly, the decolonization process as well. I mean, that was something that was stripped from Indigenous peoples. Children in residential schools were punished for speaking their language. And I think it's the right thing to do, given the legacy of the Church's role in residential schools is to help them reclaim their language. And if Bible Societies and churches can help in that, I think that's a wonderful thing. It touches their heart, it's their heart language and that's...heart languages are a way when we bring the Scripture into their language, we're touching their heart.

Trailer | S06 Ep01 | Andy Bannister | What Is the Difference Between the Bible and the Quran?
16 januari 2024 · 1 min
Lamin Sanneh, wonderful African theologian wrote a great book a few years ago, called Whose Religion is Christianity. And he makes the point that all the major world's major faith traditions have largely stayed focused on the culture where they began. So, Islam is an Arabic faith you pray in Arabic. You pray facing Mecca. Saudi Arabia is the spiritual center, so it's remained centered on Arabia. Thailand...Buddhism...90% of the world's Buddhists are in Thailand, and that part of Asia, you know, the whole thing sort of kicks off. Lees meer
And so it goes for all the world's major faith traditions. The one exception Lamin says is Christianity. It begins as a Middle Eastern faith, then it expands into Asia and becomes an Asian faith, then it goes west and becomes an African faith then it heads up north and becomes a European faith. It goes across the Atlantic with the Pilgrim Fathers and becomes an American faith. Now it's headed south and becomes a Latin American faith. It's going back into Africa, again, with millions of Christians there, and again, now spreading like wildfire across the Middle East. And he makes the point: Christianity is...you can't pin it down, because it's not tied in to one human culture. Because the God of the Bible is much bigger than human culture even though in the person Jesus, He stepped into one culture in particular.

Trailer | S05 Ep12 | Tim Barnett | Are Faith and Reason at Odds?
5 december 2023 · 1 min
I mean, people will say, well, do you take the Bible literally? And my question is, well, which parts you know? Because if you mean like, well, then Jesus is a door. Like He is a wood door or He's a vine. Okay? Well, do you think He's a stick? No. Of course you're gonna... this is so important. We always read the Bible in context. We have a little aphorism we use. We say, never read a Bible verse. Never read a Bible verse. What do we mean? We're not saying don't read the Bible. We're saying, just don't read a single verse without looking at the context - the verses before and after the paragraph, the chapter, even the vibe, the book inside the Bible, as the context dictates. So, it's really important that we understand what it is we're reading. I think this is where Christians get all mixed up.

Trailer | S05 Ep11 | Alanzo Paul | Helping the Next Gen Find Hope and Purpose
1 december 2023 · 1 min
I remember when I first started in youth ministry, a few years after my conversion, you'd shy away from the whole God is judge thing. Maybe we save that for Bible study or one-on-one conversation, you know, we don't want to put people off. And it's like, no, man, you need to come out with that. Like if there wasn't a hell, and if there wasn't a judge, I don't even know if I could be a Christian. And so, when we reframe things, and give the reasons for why we think this. Credible reasons for why we think this, why this is internally coherent within the Christian worldview, and how it satisfies the sorts of existential concerns that we have in questions that we have, I think that that's a huge opportunity.

22 november 2023 · 1 min
You know, sometimes at Christmas time, you know we have a wonderful and glorious time but actually also for many of us at Christmas time it can be a reminder of the lament of the world, perhaps the wars or you know, violence. The violent things that are happening in the world cause us to lament or perhaps we just remember the losses, you know, another year is rolling around and we see who isn't there at the Christmas table. We're grieving over the death of loved ones and Mary's Song of Hope, the Magnificat focuses us on who Jesus is, what He has come to do, that He will set all things right in the end. And I just think that is such a beautiful reminder. At Christmas if we're in a season of lament, if we're feeling hopeless about the state of the world, Jesus is the One who will bring the oppressor down from their throne.

Trailer | S05 Ep09 | Kevin Burgess | Are We Cocreating Technology With God?
15 november 2023 · 1 min
It's the first three verses of Hebrews 11, which says, "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for, and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for." And it's this verse here, verse three, that rocks my world, every time I read it, "By faith, we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible." And the way I read that in the past was always that, oh, God called into existence, stuff that did not exist. But it doesn't say that. It says, "what is seen was not made out of what was visible." So, He called into the visible what was not yet visible. So, there are things already existing in God's imagination that by faith get called into the visible. And with that I would just encourage people to as they pick up the Bible, as they pray, as they interact with the Holy Spirit to ask what's in God's imagination for any particular moment so that by faith we can call and cocreate with Him to bring that into the visible reality that everyone around us can experience.

Trailer | S05 Ep08 | Michael Perreau | What Do Encounters With God Look Like?
9 november 2023 · 1 min
It takes a small bit of light to light up a very dark room, Lorna. We don't need to have fire. We don't have to have a blazing fire in the middle of the room. We don't have to feel the warmth. We just need a matchstick of light and that's what God often sends. So that's what I embrace. I don't look for adversity, but I don't hide away from that. And perhaps that's what led me to being in places where fools fear to tread in terms of peace and conflict resolution.

Listen to Michael Perreau, former Director General of the United Bible Societies being interviewed by veteran journalist Lorna Dueck. They discuss the power of listening and taking pauses, especially during conflict situations, availability and accessibility to the Bible - everyone who wants it should have it - and being aware of how available and accessible we make ourselves when He calls. Are we listening? Is there something we can do to make ourselves more available and accessible to Him? Do we realize when we have encounters with Him and through Him? Trailer | S05 Ep07 | Wesley Huff | Why Do You Believe What You Believe?
31 oktober 2023 · 1 min
We have a hope that is eternal. It was C.S. Lewis, in Mere Christianity who said, "If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world." And that's exactly what the narrative of Scripture is, you know, our hope is not here. Our hope is eternal, and it's in a right relationship with God. That doesn't mean that the here and now is not important. You know, we can care about the environment because we were entrusted as stewards of creation. And that can give a strengthening and an undergirding for caring about the world around us, caring about people. And I think ultimately, these desires that we have for stewardship, for ideas like justice well, those are inherently Christian ideas. That's the air we breathe in the Western Hemisphere because of our Christian heritage.

Trailer | S05 Ep05 | Andrew Bennett and Andrew Stirling | How Well Do Christians Know the Bible?
24 oktober 2023 · 1 min
If you don't know who Jesus Christ is, that means you're not engaging Scripture. And if you're not engaging Scripture, you might come to a false understanding of who Jesus Christ is. Oh, Jesus Christ was a prophet. He was a social justice advocate. No, He's the incarnate Son of God. And that is revealed in Scriptures. And it's through that revelation that we come to know about who He is, the Saviour of the world, the Promised Messiah, the fulfillment of the law, the prophets, and the covenants. But He is also for us, He is our Lord and God and He has changed everything. And it's continuing to change things through the incarnation to the resurrection. And if you don't know those things, first of all, how can you live out your faith as a Christian? And how can you possibly come to understand the nature of the world and the nature of yourself as a human person made in His image and likeness? So, without engaging the Bible, we simply cannot be Christians. Lees meer

So, I've followed Jesus now for more than 60 years, and always, there have been a few days life has been too busy to do it, just impossible, but every day. I mean I was reading this morning, and I just love that time every day in the Bible, in the Scriptures. And what's amazing is I read it now, well, more than 60 times, you always, every year see something fresh, that you didn't see before. And you think, my goodness, why didn't I see that? And of course, the simple fact is that life is raising different questions all the time. And you bring those at least in the back of your mind to what you're reading, and you suddenly see again, and again, the incredible relevance of Scripture. I love it. Lees meer

10 oktober 2023 · 1 min
But ultimately, it's based on the assumption that justice is good, yeah or that there is a thing called justice that is driving us to the heart of the gospel of God, who Himself is justice personified. So don't think that in dealing with this situation, you're losing sight of Scripture. You're not. It is about, again, getting back in the Word and seeing what God says about us. And not just taking you know, Galatians 3:27 and 28. There is neither slave nor free, Jew nor Greek, male nor female. A lot of people use that Scripture to say, therefore we should have the conversation. That Scripture's not doing what we think it's doing. It's not. Have a conversation, look back at Scripture. What is the question behind the question? It is a question of justice, and all of our hearts desire for justice is found. Bless the Lord in the God of the Bible. That's where we're coming back to.

Trailer | S05 Ep03 | Cardinal Collins | A Cardinal's View on the Positive Effects of Reading Scripture
4 oktober 2023 · 1 min
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? You think, well, I don't feel like that. I'm feeling great right now. But somewhere, someone else is feeling that way and maybe I pray this Psalm, not for myself, but for someone else. And I can enter into their experience or conversely, if I'm feeling, oh, it was a terrible day and I'm, oh I'm so distraught, everything's going wrong! I flip open the page and it's, you know, come into our joy to the Lord, serve the Lord of gladness. Well, I don't feel that way but maybe someone else does and maybe I need to get out of my own self. We implode into ourselves too much. Maybe I should pray for someone else, and not just for myself. So we lose ourselves in the Psalms, and they're better. It's nice when the Psalm expresses what I feel. It's better when it doesn't, because then it stretches me out of my own ego, and that's what we need to do.

Trailer | S05 Ep02 | Ben Heppner | A World-Renowned Tenor Speaks About Faith
4 oktober 2023 · 1 min
And I think it was in the middle of that process that I started to realize that like the Israelites sort of collecting their stones and piling them all together, and to what is called an Ebenezer, I think, here I raise mine every day. And so, all these things started to dawn on me that this was a thing, and I hadn't realized that these stones were related, and they needed...then they build up to something. And so, it didn't happen before, it happened during the process of becoming an opera singer. And then, as the career progressed, the talking about it I was sort of forced always to talk about faith and sort of what it meant to me. I mean, it was in a very cursory kind of way, but it was frequently brought up and then maybe that was also contributed to the fact that I realized it was more of a call than I had realized.

In this episode, listen as Ben Heppner (Canadian tenor and broadcaster) shares with Rev. Dr. Andrew Stirling (Ambassador, Canadian Bible Society) about the role of Scripture in his life. Recorded as part of a series entitled The Word for Life: When Scripture Comes Alive, Ben talks about discovering in his early years a view of the Bible as bread, not stone, that gives life, and points you to Jesus. Referring to Joshua 4:9 and 1 Samuel 7, he shares how, in retrospect, he realized that over the years, God helped him to add different elements to his toolkit, including opera. He explains how the church has been foundational in his life and acknowledges that it was in the church that he learned the ropes of being a public singer.
