Trailer | S05 Ep01 | Philip Yancey | A Best-Selling Author's Search for Grace and Meaning
3 oktober 2023 · 1 min
When you interview people and you do surveys the vast majority say the times I grew most, especially grew most in my faith, those were hard times, difficult times. And if we hang in there with trust and faith, independence and help of others around us later, we can often look back on those, "Oh, that was a time of redeemed pain. I wouldn't wish it on anybody. I wouldn't wish it on myself." But those things that were most difficult for me, become pillars of faith for most people. So, I would say there's some people on radio and television who will promise you that bad things won't happen to you and they're just wrong. You know, bad things do happen. But I call God the great recycler. He takes things that we wish didn't happen and turns them into things that are useful for us.

Listen to best-selling author Philip Yancey being interviewed by seasoned journalist Lorna Dueck as they discuss Philip's journey through life and faith. Philip experienced many troubles during his childhood which led him to probe the most basic questions and deepest mysteries of the Christian faith. Philip has been guiding millions of readers with his books such as, "Disappointment with God", and, "Where Is God When It Hurts?" His books have garnered 13 Gold Medallion Awards from Christian publishers and booksellers. Philip currently has more than 17 million books in print, published in over 50 languages worldwide. Lees meerFor Philip Yancey, reading offered a window to a different world. So, he devoured books that opened his mind, challenged his upbringing and went against what he had been taught. In doing so, a sense of betrayal began to engulf him. In his words, “I felt I had been lied to. I realized that God had been misrepresented to me. Then cautiously, warily, I returned, circling around the faith to see if it might be true.” Those discoveries about God and more are contained in Philips recent memoir, "Where the Light Fell", where he takes us on a journey from strict fundamentalism to a sea…

Recorded as part of a series entitled The Word for Life: When Scripture Comes Alive, Ben talks about discovering in his early years a view of the Bible as bread, not stone, that gives life, and points you to Jesus. Referring to Joshua 4:9 and 1 Samuel 7, he shares how, in retrospect, he realized that over the years, God helped him to add different elements to his toolkit, including opera. He explains how the church has been foundational in his life and acknowledges that it was in the church that he learned the ropes of being a public singer. Lees meer

Trailer | S04 Ep09 | Anna Robbins | Finding Our Purpose with the Help of the Scriptures
8 augustus 2023 · 1 min
If we just understood that we can sit with people and talk about it and say: What does the Scripture mean? Rather than informing everybody all the time as to what it means and recognize that's colonizing people. It's saying, "You believe like me, and then you're acceptable", rather than saying, "Here's the man who told me everything I ever did. Come and see." You know, there's the woman at the well she's calling them forward and saying, "Come and see for yourself." She didn't come and say, "Here, now I'm gonna tell you what you have to do." No, she just said to come and see, come and see. And so I think I think there's, a huge opportunity for us still at it. I am optimistic for the church if we could just get a hold of that piece. I think that the opportunity for people to be reintroduced to the God who loves them, is just as powerful as it's ever been at any time in history.

Trailer | S04 Ep08 | Mayor Dan Carter | Optimism and Light Amidst the Darkness
2 augustus 2023 · 1 min
There is a possibility for redemption and for forgiveness and recovery. And that all of us have been chosen to be here, that we were created, that we were birthed, that we are God's children. And that we all fit within this society one way or another. And that I always say to people, "Please never give up hope." I understand your frustration. I understand your anger. I understand your disappointment. I understand all that. My parents went through that. My sister, my brothers went through it. You know, it took my parents three years till they really believe that I was clean, sober, and I was a different man. And if I wasn't equipped properly, I would have come out of recovery and said, "Well, I'm all clean, like everything's forgiven. Let's move on." Well, it takes a long time to deal with the hurt, the shame and all of the things that you have to make amends with.

Trailer | S04 Ep07 | Cardinal Lacroix | The Bible: An Encounter with Jesus
27 juli 2023 · 1 min
The Word of God and Christianity is foremost and above all, a relationship, an experience of a relationship with someone. It's an encounter. It's not a book of history, although there's a lot of history. It's not a book of stories, although there are a lot of stories. It's the revelation of a God who so loved the world, that He created it for us. And when it was broken, and when it was going to the...not in a good situation, He so loved the world that He sent His only Son to reveal that love, that mercy so that we could have life and have it abundantly. So that's the love. That's the love of God that we encounter. When you encounter that or are encountered by that love it changes you.

Trailer | S04 Ep06 | Andy Steiger | Finding Answers When Questioning Faith
19 juli 2023 · 1 min
I think life is messy and it will always be messy, and it'll always be broken. I don't think we'll be able to usher in a utopia on Earth and I think the Bible is quite clear about that. Ultimately, we need Jesus, and our hope isn't found here. It's found in a different kingdom, His kingdom and so that's always important to me. But what we do at AC (Apologetics Canada) that I think is really unique and needed, particularly here in Canada, is to meet people where they're at, and to point them to Jesus. And oftentimes when where we're at is where we're in these ethical challenges, we want to engage with where culture is at, and the questions people are wrestling with. Again, in gentleness and respect, and we want to get at those primary issues that ultimately lead people to Jesus that we are encouraging and arguing provides a solid foundation for those things that we do believe in, such as humanity, such as human value.
---
Dr. Andy Steiger is the founder and president of Apologetics Canada (AC), dedicated to helping Christian communities grow in their faith and share their hope. Listen as Andy and Lorna discuss this generation of young people - both Christians and non-Christians alike - who have questions and are seeking truth. The challenge in Western culture is communicating the message of Jesus in a way that people can understand and appreciate. Sharing the gospel requires us all to understand and speak the language of culture and address the questions being asked with intellectual honesty, gentleness and respect. Trailer | S04 Ep05 | Paul Burns | A Tech Executive's Take on Redemptive Technology
13 juli 2023 · 1 min
I would say God loves technology. You know, He gave Noah a detailed blueprint of a boat, and gave him the plans to build it. You know, like, if that's not technology, I don't know what is. And so I think, God has a heart for tech and I think He inspires technology. You know, a lot of times, it's easy to get fearful of new technology. And you see that a lot now, especially with artificial intelligence, you know...let's look at all the possible negative things that could come from this technology and I don't dispute that. But I would also say that like, you know, how do you think about technology redemptively? And so I, you know, believe there's a massive opportunity for redemptive technology, technology that is sacrificial, that we are using the gifts and skills that God has given us to redeem the broken world around us. Trailer | S04 Ep04 | Cheryl Nembhard | Walking the Talk and Empowering Youth & Women
4 juli 2023 · 1 min
It is comfort. It is the true source of joy, of hope, of peace. The Word of God is not just a holy, you know, canon of scriptures, it is a roadmap. It's where we draw our identity from. It is the place of comfort and solace. It's where we can sit at the feet of Jesus, and just feel held and strengthened from God's hand. It's just this incredible...I think I never saw the Word of God like I see it now. It was definitely a sword when I needed it to be a sword when I was fighting and overcoming and, you know, facing a lot of battles but man, it has been this incredible source. This river of comfort for me. Lees meer

Trailer | S04 Ep02 | Cheryl Weber | Turning to Scripture to Dispel Fear, Anxiety and Loneliness
20 juni 2023 · 1 min
The Holy Spirit is our teacher. I think there is a certain comfort we have to have with not understanding everything and that's okay. That's where faith comes in but I think having people who can walk with you through the Bible, especially when you're starting is super important. But I would just say there's so many ways to do it and stop condemning ourselves for not doing it enough, doing it perfectly, you know, understanding it enough...just the freedom to just be an explorer and, you know, just be a learner, even if you don't understand it, just keep putting it into you. I really do believe the Bible... it says it's sharper than a two-edged sword, that it brings life to us, and I think there's truth about that, that we need to return to because it's just really easy to leave it behind. And then we're thinking things that aren't anything near how God thinks about things, which is completely opposite to how you would naturally think...I think 100%, completely opposite. So yeah, renew our minds. We need to do it. Lees meer

Trailer | S04 Ep01 | Steve Bell | Building a Bridge from God's Heart to Yours through Scripture & Song
13 juni 2023 · 1 min
And you don't come to Scripture as something to mine as a...it's not a vein of coal that we can take and make something with. It's not a resource in that sense. It's something we can use for making or creating something to make to our advantage. It is something to be loved, cherished, adored, and nurtured. If we love it, we'll come to know it. And if we do that work in that order, I think the knowledge, the love knowledge that we get from that will really help us be a witness to the very whoness of who God is. And there's two books to pay attention to. There's the book of Scripture, and there's the book of nature. God wrote them both and if we love them, we're gonna get to the whoness of God. And out of that we can become a light in a dark world.

Trailer | S03 Ep12 | Susan Finlay | What Would Happen if We Prayed Every Day for Elected Officials?
3 mei 2023 · 1 min
It's amazing how the Bible just opened. Philippians 4...I mean of all passages. You could not find a better passage. No, you couldn't. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God and the peace of God will guard your heart and mind. And then it goes on. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. And that was so powerful and completely shifted. And I also learned because of the experience I had had the day before, that when you pass on because I was...they told me I was pretty much near death, and it would have been fine. I was so...when you pass on in the Lord there is nothing to fear and when you do not fear death, you don't fear life. You know, it's just, it's the maximum that it is transformative. Lees meer

Trailer | S03 Ep11 | Andrew Williams | Embracing Inclusion and Diversity
25 april 2023 · 1 min
So it's a call to discomfort, not a call to comfort and going back to our earlier conversation, often it seems so much of our faith paradigm is not a call to comfort, but it justifies our comfort. It allows us to remain in the same place and it allows us to huddle, and it doesn't call us to bring in other people in discomfort. Matthew 5, I won't read it all but it goes on and on to a point where we're stripped of the comforts, God seeps in and we start looking outwards. And in that outward embrace, we start embracing more people. And it's almost as if your internal engine flips to the way it was meant to be. Before we're trying to suck in satisfaction. All of a sudden we're breathing the life, breathing life into the people and the experiences around us.

Trailer | S03 Ep10 | Archbishop Angaelos | A View of Scripture from the Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of London
20 april 2023 · 1 min
What I like to do is to take Scripture and show how applicable it is to our current setting. And people suddenly think, well, actually, we've never read that before because basically what people do is they read Scripture in a box...and it's over there...and it's the Bible that I take off the shelf and read, and then I go and live life, that don't realize that Scripture actually plays into life. And if we look at just the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ, His example, the way He lived, and what He challenges us to, and we see, for almost every situation in our lives, there is some sort of parallel that we can draw inspiration and strength from to be able to live properly and do what is right.

Trailer | S03 Ep09 | Where Scripture Comes Alive with Pastor Mark Buchanan
12 april 2023 · 1 min
I take students to the arrangement of the beginning of Genesis, where in the Hebrew Bible, it doesn't end with the domination of humankind over creation, ruling over dominion. It ends with the Sabbath, the chapter one ends with a Sabbath. So, it's gotten humans resting together. So, it's a very different picture from sort of humans now being released to run around with chainsaws and bulldozers or whatever and rule over the thing. It's rather a picture of coming to this place of resting in the creation, resting in the presence of the Creator, this quietness of spirit. And I think that the Scriptures begin there and then from there lay a foundation around what it is to be lovers and keepers of the earth that God has entrusted to us.

Trailer | S03 Ep08 | Mike Janzen | The Psalms: Experiencing God's Restorative Power
29 maart 2023 · 1 min
But once this injury happened, I suddenly was in the dark with nothing but time and I was left alone, sort of with my thoughts. And that wasn't that much fun because when you're left alone without any other stimulus or people around you, you're sort of stuck in this dark place of just yourself and the things that come out of that. And I was desperate. I didn't know how to pray, when I couldn't really even concentrate for more than a few seconds and so I reached out to the Psalms, and there's a lovely little verse in there that says: By day the Lord directs His love. At night, His song is with me. And I began to slowly breathe those words in and out, thinking about all the times in life and in my present circumstances that God's love was with me. And also, in the times at night, in the dark times, in the depressed times, anxious times, how God's love sustains us.

Trailer | S03 Ep07 | Mark Petersen | Walking the Camino
21 maart 2023 · 1 min
It's very simple. You know, you don't...you only...you're walking with everything you have is on your back in a backpack, and it's just a simple life. And I love being reminded that we don't need all the stuff that we have in our lives. You know, to exist. We need very little and to be reminded of that in a pilgrimage is really worthwhile. One of the Scriptures that means the most to me is from Lamentations 3 where God's mercies are new every morning. Great is His faithfulness and you know, walking the Camino is a great reminder to me of that. Starting fresh, encountering obstacles, encountering defeats, encountering struggles with Jesus by our side. His mercies are new every morning, you know, and He gives us enough that we need for each day and we can start again. Lees meer

Trailer | S03 Ep06 | Matt Unruh | Interacting with Scripture through Music and Worship
14 maart 2023 · 1 min
So, the arts are actually far more ancient disciplines of interacting with the Scripture in a way that sometimes actually gets past our mind and into our heart and our soul at a different level. You know, you hear a great story, you watch a great movie, and all of a sudden, it's a tearjerker, and you can't help it, you're just moved emotionally. Well, that does something to you and the stories we find in the Bible are doing that as well, right? You're reading these characters; you're reading what's happening with these stories that are unfolding. You read sometimes terrible stories of things that we don't even want to utter. And sometimes I'm reading the stories and I'm emotionally moved either to anger or to tears and just imagining the heartache that some of these people are experiencing. And that gets truth in us in a way that dissecting it doesn't.

Trailer | S03 Ep05 | Amanda Jenkins | The Chosen: Understanding the Success Behind the Popular TV Series
8 maart 2023 · 1 min
Well, the whole point of the show is to point people to Jesus. That's the whole point of the show, but then we're hoping that that lands them right back in Scripture, because that's how we can know Jesus. I do think that the show brings Scripture to life in a way where it had maybe gotten stale for some people. And so, all of a sudden there's this colour where it might have been a little bit black and white, but at the end of the day, it's the living Word. And it's more exciting than anything else you can be spending your time on. So that was the heart behind the extra content and the devotionals is, how can we take advantage of the gaps between the seasons to actually push people toward what matters because we are not the Bible? Dallas is the first to say: I'm not a pastor, and this is not the Bible. And if you think otherwise, you're going to be let down. So, you know, we're storytellers, and we're filmmakers. The Bible is the Bible and that's ultimately where we want people to land. Lees meer

I would say that it's primarily through my mother that I learned a love of God's Word - watching her read it daily, inviting us into prayer around the table before meals, asking us theological questions, and really holding a reverence for God's Word and passing that on to both myself and my brother. Trailer | S03 Ep03 | John Franklin | How Scripture and the Arts Intersect
21 februari 2023 · 1 min
Art opens us to newness, to unexpected possibilities and the Gospel does the same...opens us to newness, the resurrection, the promise, a new heaven, new Earth. So, it opens us to newness and unexpected possibilities so I think there's this sort of parallel between the Gospel and the arts. One other thing I would want to say is that both the arts and the Gospel invite us to a posture of receptivity. What we like in our culture is control and management. Art says, listen, listen, look, receive and that posture of receptivity I think is essential for us if we're going to flourish as human beings. Lees meer

Trailer | S03 Ep02 | Brooke Nicholls | Intersection of Scripture, Worship and Song
15 februari 2023 · 1 min
I realized that the Lord emptied me so drastically. Lees meer
So much that I had no other option,
but to completely rely on Him.
I learned in such a severe way that when I am weak,
His power comes and through that makes me strong.
You know, again, a verse that I have known my whole life
His power is made great in our weakness,
and I didn't actually know it,
and I didn't know it, know it
until I had to learn it and know it.
And I guess I'm just in some way again,
I hated that season, but I'm also like,
really grateful in some weird, weird way
because I learned that I couldn't
do any of this on my own strength,
nor was I ever meant to, you know.

Trailer | S03 Ep01 | Brian Doerksen | Scripture and the Art of Worship
7 februari 2023 · 1 min
Typically, when I'm setting a Scripture to song Lees meer
I'll open up on my laptop, six different translations
in columns, and then I'll look for phrasing that
seems to sing. And then where I can't find anything
in the translations, I will paraphrase it myself.
You know, and then some people get, you know,
get really uptight, like: Oh, you don't want to
change the Word of God! Well, that's actually
not a very helpful way of thinking about it
because every single time we read a Scripture
or we read a new translation of the Scripture,
we're interpreting it through even just the way
we speak it, so we're constantly interpreting
and paraphrasing, but we're respecting the source
because we're going...our heart is to convey the
dynamic equivalent of what the people in the
first culture would have heard when they heard
that Scripture to what our people
and our culture needs now.

Brian is a songwriter, award-winning recording artist and songwriting instructor (founder of ‘Unlocking Your Songs’). His songs are known and sung internationally in faith communities of all kinds, including ‘Come Now is the Time to Worship’, ‘Refiner’s Fire’, ‘Hope Of The Nations’ and ‘The River’.But most of all, he loves spending time with his high-school sweetheart Joyce (they have been married for 38 years.) Brian & Joyce have four adult daughters and two adult sons with Fragile X Syndrome.
In this episode, Brian gets very personal about his own faith journey, doubt, how he wrestles with Scripture to untangle it for himself, and offer it back to congregations in song. We think you are going to be richly strengthened by his reflections in this episode. Also, don’t miss the end of this episode where Brian plays a song for us that hasn’t been released yet!

A Catholic nun, one of the translators of the Dead Sea Scrolls, featured on the front page of the New York Times, learned Hebrew & Aramaic in her twenties and yet is one of the most humble and earnest teachers ever. She is nothing short of inspiring.
Dr. Eileen Schuller is a professor emeritus at the Faculty of Social Sciences at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Sister Schuller is an official editor of the Dead Sea Scrolls and has been one of Canada’s most respected Scripture scholars for the last half century since completing her doctoral studies at Harvard University.
Much of Dr. Schuller’s scholarly career has centred around the Dead Sea Scrolls—working to ensure their careful study, analysis and publication, and helping people to understand both their content and their importance in the larger field of modern Biblical study. She is one of the team of editors who helped to complete the publication of the Scrolls in the 1990s, and she regularly writes and lectures on them around the world, both for her academic colleagues and for non-specialist audiences. Much of her work has focused on non-canonical Psalms, on the Hodayot (hymns of praise) from the Scrolls, and on women in the Bible.
