    Laura asks Amanda to describe how and when she met her ex fiancé, David Rogerson, and the start of the relationship. Amanda shares how this charming, seemingly devoted partner swept her off her feet before revealing a terrifying side. Laura unravels the warning signs dressed up as romance, the calculated manipulation and coercive control, and how a predator can exploit kindness and compassion to entrap a victim.

    In this episode, Laura and Amanda examine:

    The early warning signs disguised as romance, including love bombing, intense attention and a whirlwind relationship;

    The frightening moment his mask slipped, exposing extreme jealousy, intimidation and controlling behaviour;

    How perpetrators exploit empathy, manipulate boundaries and use DARVO to portray themselves as victims;

    The devastating psychological and physical impact of coercive control, isolation and abuse;

    How seemingly caring behaviour can conceal surveillance, domination and escalating control;

    Amanda's courage in waiving anonymity, inspired by Gisèle Pelicot, and her determination to shift the shame onto perpetrators.

    Content Warning: This episode contains discussion of domestic abuse, coercive control, psychological abuse, sexual violence, drug-facilitated rape and victim-blaming.

    Mica Francis was taking steps to reclaim her life and freedom. Then, on April 27 2024, she was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina. Since Mica’s death, Laura has extensively analysed the pattern of coercive control, stalking and post-separation abuse Mica reported experiencing, as well as the circumstances leading up to her death. Lees meer

    Mica’s story is the focus of the Netflix documentary The Death of The Pastor’s Wife. Attorney Regina Ward was Mica’s divorce lawyer, and she appears in the documentary. John Paul Miller called her repeatedly following Mica’s death. Regina shares unique insight into John-Paul’s behaviour around the time of Mica’s death, the manipulation Mica was navigating and some of what did not make it into the Netflix documentary.

    Together, Laura and Regina unpack what was happening behind the scenes as Mica took steps to divorce from John-Paul Miller, the strategies used to manage his behaviour, Mica’s mindset during those final months and what Regina witnessed as Mica worked to regain control of her life.

    Learn how women are further entrapped in South Carolina owing to archaic and dangerous patriarchal legal processes that intentionally prevent women from leaving men who abuse them, leaving them at high risk of suicide and femicide. It’s by design and they are not even trying to change it.

    John-Paul Miller’s behaviour around the time of Mica’s death

    As the violence escalated, Grace finally called 911. She describes the police officer who recognised something Grace could not yet fully see herself. She reveals why and how he identified how dangerous the abuser was. Lees meer

    Grace describes the successful strategy she used to leave. Laura examines why victims may continue to protect, defend or return to the abuser - and why these behaviours need to be understood within the wider pattern of coercive control by EVERYONE.

    Grace shares how her ex-partner pressured her to become pregnant and how his sense of entitlement extended to her reproductive choices. Laura unpacks reproductive coercion and how perpetrators can use pregnancy and children to increase dependency, entrapment and control.

    Laura and Grace explore how an abuser can use a program and those running them as another means of manipulation and re-grooming.

    Laura and Grace discuss:

    Successful strategies for leaving

    Reproductive coercion and entrapment

    Trauma bonding and re-grooming

    Escalation and high-risk behaviours

    The weaponisation of therapeutic and recovery language

    Why victims may protect or defend the abuser

    The importance of informed police responses

    Why leaving is a process, not an event

    Accountability versus apologies

    Grace's journey from survivor to advocate

    Coercive control correlates significantly with femicide, familicide, homicide, and suicide. Never tell the abuser you are leaving.

    Why doesn't she just leave? Lees meer

    It's a question survivors of domestic abuse hear again and again. But it places the focus in entirely the wrong place.

    Laura interviews Grace Stuart, survivor and host of Why She Stayed podcast, to examine how coercive control can develop gradually - and why it can be so difficult to recognise when you're living inside it.

    Grace was just 20 when she met her former partner, who was 14 years older. What initially felt intense and intoxicating became a complex spider's web of grooming, manipulation and control.

    Grace shares how apparent honesty and vulnerability built trust, while her boundaries were crossed incrementally and each violation explained away. Laura unpacks the pattern: the love bombing, age and power imbalance, gaslighting, isolation, sexual coercion and the gradual erosion of Grace's trust in her own instincts.

    They also explore how addiction became an explanation for behaviour that Grace did not yet have the language to identify as domestic abuse.

    Laura and Grace discuss:

    Grooming, love bombing and accelerated intimacy

    Age and power imbalances

    Boundary testing and incremental erosion

    Gaslighting and self-doubt

    Isolation and dependency

    Sexual coercion and violence

    Addiction versus abusive behaviour

    Why recognising the pattern matters

    The question isn't why did she stay? It's what did he do that made staying make sense?

    Economic abuse is about far more than stopping someone from accessing money. It can involve restriction, exploitation and sabotage - and it can be so deeply woven into coercive control that victims may not recognise what is happening to them.

    Laura is joined by Dr Nicola Sharp-Jeffs OBE, CF internationally recognised expert on economic abuse, author and founder of Surviving Economic Abuse, for a deeper examination of how perpetrators weaponise money and economic resources to establish and maintain power and control.

    Nicola shares findings from her pioneering research, which found economic abuse in 89% of the domestic abuse cases studied, and explains how perpetrators restrict resources, exploit a partner's income and credit, generate debt, sabotage employment and manipulate household finances.

    Laura and Nicola discuss new trends they are seeing and challenge the assumption that having a job, earning your own money or managing a joint bank account means you have financial independence. They discuss survivors who believed they controlled the household finances, only to later recognise that their partner was concealing income, exploiting their earnings or manipulating debt behind the scenes.

    They also explore why economic abuse can continue - and sometimes intensify - long after separation, through property, debt, child-related costs and repeated use of the family and civil courts. Laura and Dr Nicola Sharp-Jeffs also recently had a deeply insightful discussion in the Crime Analyst Squad unpacking the hidden patterns and devastating impact of economic abuse, financial control and coercive control. 23. Ep #363 The 530-Day Trap: Coercive Control, Strangulation, and the Fight for Paris’s Law with Paris Shears, Part 2

    17 augustus 2026 · 1 uur 15 min

    Afspelen
    Imagine waiting 530 days waiting for the trial of the man who groomed, controlled, strangled and assaulted you only to walk into court on day one and be told there would be no trial. Behind closed doors a plea deal was negotiated dramatically altering the outcome of the case, resulting in Robert Hastings walking free – no prison time. Lees meer

    Strangulation and coercive control are high risk behaviours correlating significantly with serious harm and femicide – yet far too often abusers are rarely charged. This case was rare because it did and yet there was still no justice.

    Listen as Laura and Paris explore Paris’s own experience, including how her children were targeted, how perpetrators exploit systems to maintain power and control long after a relationship has ended, and why recognising these behaviours is critical to preventing serious harm and homicide.

    Paris also shares how surviving abuse has transformed her into an advocate for change through Paris's Law, her campaign to reform the criminal justice system so that victims are no longer re-traumatised by late guilty pleas in domestic abuse cases.

    In this episode Laura and Paris discuss:

    Why non-fatal strangulation is one of the strongest predictors of femicide;

    The 530-day wait for trial and the impact of late guilty pleas on victims;

    Image management and how perpetrators present themselves to others;

    Grooming, manipulation and behavioural patterns used to establish power and control;

    Stalking and post-separation abuse as continuing patterns of coercive control;

    Why high-risk behaviours must never be viewed in isolation;

    The emotional toll of navigating the criminal justice system;

    Paris's Law and why legislative reform is urgently needed.

    Paris Shears never imagined that the man she fell in love with would groom, physically harm and control her. What began as a seemingly loving relationship became a pattern of coercive control, intimidation and violence that left her fearing for her life. Lees meer

    When Paris's former partner was charged with offences including intentional strangulation and assault, he initially pleaded not guilty. After more than a year with the trial looming over her head, Paris went to court for the first day of the trial, and there was a closed meeting where he changed his plea and took a deal. The consequences have been devastating for Paris which is why she launched a petition calling for Paris's Law, and urgent reform so perpetrators cannot control victims once charged and benefit from changing their plea at the last minute in cases involving domestic abuse and coercive control.

    In this episode Laura and Paris discuss:

    Paris's relationship and the gradual progression of coercive control.

    Grooming behaviours and how predators identify and exploit vulnerability.

    The impact of people-pleasing, trauma and self-abandonment.

    Red flags and behavioural patterns that should never be ignored.

    Why coercive control is often misunderstood by family, friends and professionals.

    The criminal charges brought against Paris's former partner and the outcome of the case.

    The impact of late guilty pleas on victims and the justice process.

  27. Ep #359 Kennedi Westcarr-Sabaroche - Murder or Manslaughter? with Linda Westcarr

    3 augustus 2026 · 1 uur 18 min

    Afspelen
    In April 2024 25-year-old Kennedi Westcarr-Sabaroche was a social media marketer and mother from East London who was found murdered in her car. She had been strangled and stabbed. Lees meer

    Days before her death, Kennedi told a friend she was “on a break” from her relationship with Gogoa Lois Tape. But Tape lured her to meet him under false pretences and strangled her in the driver’s seat of her own car—for eight minutes.

    Tape was charged with murder, but prosecutors ultimately accepted a guilty plea to the lesser offence of manslaughter by diminished responsibility. He was sentenced to a hospital order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act with a restriction order under Section 41. This means he will not serve a day in prison.

    In this episode, Laura applies her expertise in behavioural analysis to determine whether there were coercive and controlling behaviours prior to Kennedi’s death and examines Tepe’s post offence behaviour where he confesses to murder. Did he have clarity of mind and a consciousness of guilt? Did the court get it right? Just five months after sentencing, there was a move to apply for escorted leave for Tape. Linda is aggrieved and shares and why this is not justice.

    In this episode Laura and Linda discuss:

    Victimology: Kennedi's life and the person she was beyond the headlines;

    The antecedents to Kennedi’s death;

    Behavioural patterns and warning signs that should never be ignored;

    The impact of coercive control and escalating abuse;

    The family's experience of the investigation and court process;

    The intersection of violent offending, mental illness and public safety;

    Why victims and families deserve to be heard;

    What needs to change to better protect women and prevent future homicides.

  29. Ep #357 The $176,500 Contempt Order & The Never Ending Murdaugh Saga with Mandy Matney Part 1

    27 juli 2026 · 1 uur 15 min

    Afspelen
    Investigative journalist Mandy Matney is best known for doggedly pursuing and unraveling Alex Murdaugh's financial crimes against his 100-year-old family law firm and its clients in the low country of South Carolina. Mandy’s coverage of and in-depth investigation into Murdaugh’s legal dynasty family began in 2019, when a boat crash involving 19-year-old Paul Murdaugh resulted in the death of 19 -year-old Mallory Beach. Mandy's relentless reporting continued through 2021 with the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh and extensive trial of former attorney Alex Murdaugh, who was eventually found guilty of their murders. However, in 2026 he was granted a new trial. Lees meer

    Mandy told the story via the hugely successful "Murdaugh Murders Podcast" which led to the Hulu miniseries "Murdaugh: Death in the Family", on which Mandy served as executive producer.

    On 7/13/26, Judge R. Keith Kelly, Hampton County, SC, issued a contempt order against Mandy and ordered her to pay $176,500 in attorneys' fees and a fine for "wilfully" failing to appear for a deposition on March 27 2026 in the case of Beach v Parker, et al, in which she is a non-party. Of note is that the deposition did go ahead 11 days later.

    In this episode, Laura and Mandy carefully examine the timeline of events, the courtroom proceedings and the wider implications-not only for Mandy, but for investigative reporting more broadly. Laura also shares her analysis of patterns of behaviour of those who stalk and harass and how common it is for courts not to understand motivation, threats and the ‘dripping tap’ power and control related intimidation tactics used by men against women.

    Joanna Simpson was brutally killed by her estranged husband, British Airways pilot Robert Brown, just one week before their divorce was due to be finalised. Brown pre-dug a grave and hid her body in Great Windsor Park. He finally admitted killing Joanna with a claw hammer, but he was acquitted of murder and convicted of manslaughter which meant he was eligible for release after 13 years. Following years of campaigning by Joanna's mother Diana Parkes, best friend Hetti Barkworth-Nanton, Laura Richards and thousands of Crime Analyst listeners, Brown’s automatic release was stopped in 2023. Lees meer

    He came up for parole in April 2026. In this episode, Laura interviews Hetti Barkworth-Nanton and they take you behind the Parole Board Hearing sharing new details about Brown's psychopathic behaviour and ongoing risk.

    In this episode Laura and Hetti discuss:

    The significance of the fact-finding process prior to the Parole Board Hearing.

    What the panel learned about Robert Brown's behaviour and psychology from a 330 page dossier.

    Why psychopathy and behavioural patterns matter in risk assessment.

    The importance of coercive control when assessing risk and dangerousness.

    The knife incident and why it remained significant despite no criminal conviction.

    Why the original sentencing remarks became crucial evidence years later.

    The difference between criminal convictions and behavioural evidence.

    What "retained culpability" means and why it mattered at the Parole Board Hearing.

    Three teenage boys were convicted of 17 sexual offences, including 11 rapes of two separate girls, one at knifepoint. They were sent home with a £26 fine. Lees meer

    This case should alarm everyone – and it is far from isolated. Laura continues her analysis of Judge Nicholas Rowland’s sentencing remarks including the lack of understanding by the Judge regarding grooming, the power imbalance, vulnerability, coercion, planning and exploitation and the boys’ histories which has resulted in a flawed risk assessment and unduly lenient. Laura has examined the case in referring to the problematic sentencing guidelines and the context of rising levels of male violence to girls and women.

    In this episode, Laura explores:

    What the language reveals about how victims and offenders are framed;

    The minimisation of rape, coercion, intimidation, grooming and planning;

    How victim blaming can appear in courtroom language;

    What was prioritised — and what was ignored;

    The failure to properly recognise grooming, power imbalance, and removal of consent;

    Why the boys’ histories and escalating behaviours matter;

    The concerning lack of sentencing guidance for serious sexual offences committed by children;

    What this means for risk, accountability, public safety, and prevention;

    Why judicial training and a Judicial Accountability Framework are urgently needed.

    Laura also discusses the wider implications of the case in the context of increasing male violence against women and girls and asks urgent questions about who the criminal justice system is protecting.

    To understand this egregious decision that has quite rightly sparked national outrage, Laura shares her forensic deconstruction of Judge Rowland’s 23-page sentencing remarks in the context of the sentencing guideline and the increasing levels of male violence to girls and women. It’s worse than you might have thought.

    This is not just about one case. Laura raises urgent questions about who the criminal justice system is protecting drawing on her experience as former Head of the Homicide Prevention Unit and Head of the Sexual Offences Section at New Scotland Yard.

    In this episode, Laura examines:

    Judge Nicholas Rowland's sentencing remarks and his rationale behind them in reference to the sentencing guidelines;

    The lack of specific sentencing guidance relating to rape and indecent image offences committed by children;

    How the boys grooming and planning behaviours were overlooked;

    The role of coercion, intimidation, and power imbalance;

    The removal of consent and the realities of victim compliance;

    Planning, premeditation, and offender decision-making;

    Victim blaming and the language used throughout the proceedings;

    The representation of victims, offenders, and risk within the courtroom;

    Psychopathy, callousness, and concerning behavioural indicators;

  43. Ep 343: Convicted Serial Rapists Walk Free With £26 Fine, Pt 1

    7 juni 2026 · 53 min

    Afspelen
    Two separate girls were raped by three boys, one at knifepoint, in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, in November 2024 and January 2025. The three teenagers filmed the rapes and posted them on-line, blatantly laughing. The case went to trial, and they were found guilty of 11 counts of rape out of 17 sexual offences. However, Judge Nicholas Rowland stated, ‘None of you need go to prison today’ and that he didn’t want to crimiminalize them UNNECCESSARILY. This case has rightly caused national and international outrage and Laura is calling for the Judge to be investigated and for a judicial accountability framework. Anger is not enough – you can help and act now. Lees meer

    For a decade Laura worked at New Scotland Yard analysing violent crime, identifying patterns, linking offences, and helping catch serial rapists and serial killers. One lesson was clear: nobody starts with rape or murder. There are escalating patterns of behaviour prior and opportunities to stop them.

    In this urgent episode, Laura examines the Hampshire serial gang rape case and the boys histories which show at least one is on a pathway to murder. Laura analyses the case through the lens of behavioural analysis, risk assessment, offender pattern recognition, and public safety.

    Drawing on her experience as former Head of the Homicide Prevention Unit and Head of the Sexual Offences Section at New Scotland Yard, Laura explains why this case is not an anomaly, why accountability matters, and why the system's repeated failure to identify and intervene with dangerous offenders puts women and girls at risk.

    Laura highlights:

    • escalating dangerous patterns of behaviour;
    • why pattern recognition and near misses identification matters to prevent serious violence and homicides;
    • How systems and people in them repeatedly fail to join the dots;
    • The dangerous consequences of minimising male violence against women and girls;
    • Why accountability matters for victims, survivors, and public safety;
    • The parallels with other …
