4 januari 2025 · 1 uur 10 min
As we all recover from our New Year's hangovers, enjoy this, the second of our two live shows from last May's "Saint Audio Podcast Festival" in Oxford, England. We discuss Spice World, a film we also had the privilege of introducing at The Ultimate Picture Palace, for a screening the evening before, and -- honestly? The movie was a total blast. We hope you have fun listening to the love fest. Lees meer

21 december 2024 · 1 uur 33 min

FH Mini 118 – Getting to Know Stu
14 december 2024 · 40 min
Though we've done our best to not let it disrupt the show, Elliott's a busy bee these days and had to sit this one out, so Dan took the rare opportunity of being able to finish his sentences to get to know his old pal Stuart a little better... but with a film-related twist. Lees meer

Ep.#439 - The Avengers (1998), LIVE!
7 december 2024 · 1 uur 11 min
We took a short break around Thanksgiving, which means YOU finally get to hear one of our LIVE episodes from Oxford's inaugural Saint Audio Podcast Festival! We were extremely excited to finally do a show in the UK and see some listeners from across the pond, and -- because we were in England -- we HAD to talk about 1998's The Avengers (aka "the non-Marvel-one), a legendary mega-flop and a despoiling of a beloved British TV series. Lees meer
Note: We performed in Oxford's Town Hall, which was an absolutely gorgeous venue, but was also very large and echoey. We did what we could to minimize the effects, but we apologize that the audio does come with a little extra reverb!

Ep.#438 - Trap, with Linda Holmes
23 november 2024 · 1 uur 54 min
"But Trap wasn't a flop!" you scream to the heavens. "Neither financially, nor critically!" you wail, desperately. "It made 83 million on a 30 million budget! And it got a mixed, but not-awful 52 on Metacritic!" But the uncaring Gods of Flop offer no comfort. Because whatever your personal feelings, Trap has inspired STRONG OPINIONS, and besides, when you have a great guest like Linda Holmes, you surrender to the whims of the floppiverse. Lees meer

Ep.#437 - Megalopolis, with Roman Mars
9 november 2024 · 1 uur 58 min
You KNEW this episode was coming, and we got to it as soon as we could! We discuss Francis Ford Coppola's defiantly personal, defiantly incomprehensible, personal-fortune-destroying Megalopolis! And for such a megaflopolis episode we enlisted the help of Roman Mars, a man who knows a thing or two about architecture and design, and who's currently co-hosting a podcast series with Elliott about The Power Broker, a book about Robert Moses (clearly an inspiration for Adam Driver's "what if Robert Moses but not totally evil" character)! Episode #434 - Robot in the Family

Ep.#427 - Disclosure, with Meredith Scardino
22 juni 2024 · 2 uur 1 min
We were super-excited to welcome Meredith Scardino, the brilliant writer of a billion comedy things, but most recently the creator and showrunner of the hilarious Girls5Eva. If you haven't watched, please ask yourself what you've been doing with your life, then run over to Netflix to correct your error. We'll wait. Once you're done, you'll be all the MORE excited to hear her discuss 1994's Disclosure, a film that (in the words of Dan's Letterboxd) "Begins as a dumb and offensive sexual harassment thriller, then wisely pivots into an offensively dumb techno-thriller." But what do the other Peaches think? Listen and find out! Lees meer
Also, this episode is about a film featuring the iconic Donald Sutherland, who was still with us at the time of this recording, but who died just recently at the age of 88. We had nothing but good things to say about Mr. Sutherland, even in this silly movie, but for a more full-throated and lovely remembrance, check out this article by the great Matt Zoller Seitz.
Disclaimer: we had some unfortunate tech issues at the top of the show, resulting in some worse than normal audio. DO NOT FRET — it clears up around minute 12, and producer Alex made it listenable, if not up to our usual standard. We’ve gotten some new equipment that will prevent similar issues in the future.

Episode #425 - The Matrix: Revolutions
25 mei 2024 · 1 uur 45 min
We're going into the matrix this week, in honor of Dan and Elliott's contributions to an upcoming episode of the very funny The Novelizers podcast, where comedy writers "novelize" part of a blockbuster movie from the past -- Dan wrote a "chapter" of the original The Matrix (read by our friend John Hodgman!), and he and Elliott appear on the episode playing characters who worked behind the scenes on the movie. Look for that soon, but in the meantime, enjoy this flashback discussion of The Matrix: Revolutions, our fourth-favorite Matrix movie. Lees meer

Ep. #423 - Argylle
27 april 2024 · 2 uur 13 min
What is the secret to Argylle?!? Is the CAT the spy? Did Taylor Swift write it?!? Is it the obvious twist that Dan guessed after a moment of thought having only seen the trailer?!? Is it that it doesn't work at all as a movie, but at least it's not as relentlessly boring as a lot of Flop House topics?!? It's definitely at least two of those things! Lees meer

Ep. #420 - Madame Web, with Zhubin Parang
23 maart 2024 · 2 uur 11 min
We welcome our old friend Zhubin Parang back to the main feed after years of only joining us for our FlopTales RPG series (available as bonus content for Max Fun members: join here!) -- and for such an auspicious return we had to pick an extra-special movie: Madame Web, which some have hailed as the "Cats" of superhero movies. Does it reach those heights? Who knows. But it's surely the most enjoyably-silly of Sony's Spider-Man without Spider-Man universe. We hope you enjoy it, and thanks to all who support us by becoming a member of Maximum Fun during this Max Fun Drive. Lees meer

Ep. #419 - Cat Person, with Hallie Haglund
9 maart 2024 · 2 uur 4 min
Stuart was antipodes-bound, for his Australian rambles, when we taped this one, but fear not! In his absence we recruited Hallie Haglund, noted STAR OF THE SHOW to discuss Cat Person with us, and thank god we did, because left to our own devices, we doubt that two dudes would be quite as effective at exploring the dissection of gender w/r/t hetero dating relationships that Cat Person brings to the table (straight from the hit New Yorker short story of the same name). Did we do it justice? Only one way to find out! Lees meer
