How does one truly win at life? So far, Qoheleth has critiqued money, power, relationships, and even religiosity; but now he reveals a surprisingly simple path to the best possible life. This week's episode covers a how-to manual on the good life, unique Hebrew idioms, hypocrisy in religion, and redefining what it means to fear God. And it all caps off with a meditation on how savoring life's little moments is part of how we can defeat evil. Get ready, these few verses are packed with life-changing insights from the ancient world of the Bible! Lees meer

44. Ecclesiastes 8:1-9
16 juni 2024 · 1 uur 35 min
Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely. So what can you do when people in authority over you misuse and abuse their power? This week, Qoheleth addresses a new audience — the denizens of a king's royal court. And he offers them traditional wisdom about deferring to those in authority. Or does he? Beneath the surface reading of the text lies a radical third option between conformity and revolution. With a few easy-to-miss hyperlinks to other Bible passages, Qoheleth actually undermines the traditional wisdom of his day to preach a powerful form of civil resistance that is more in line with the rest of the Bible than you might think. Join us this week as we wade into the murky waters of political intrigue in both the ancient and modern worlds! Lees meer

43. Ecclesiastes 7
9 juni 2024 · 2 uur 41 min
This week, we tackle some of the most shocking and misunderstood content in Ecclesiastes. What does it mean to be "too righteous," and how can it lead to self-destruction? Is wisdom actually more practical than money? And does Qoheleth truly believe it’s impossible to find a good woman, or is this a misinterpretation by misogynistic translators? Join us this week as we wade in the waters of Qoheleth’s ancient world and see what treasures we can find! Lees meer
Soooo you might have noticed this episode runs a little long. Don't worry, we're not going to make a habit out of that, but we would love to hear back from you if you're ok with an occasionally longer episode or if you'd preferred we broke this one up into two. Let us know!

39. Faith, Frustration, and Motherhood: The Unspoken Pain of Mother’s Day in Church
12 mei 2024 · 1 uur 40 min
Mother's Day is a time when many communities celebrate the hardworking moms in their midst, but for some, it's also one of the most painful days on the calendar. Stories from the other side of Mother's Day have been shared for years now, but male-led churches continue to push these special services and activities on an overwhelmingly unwilling congregation. It's time we change that. This week, Janna and Stephanie Connor join the podcast to talk through the highs and lows of Mother's Day within evangelical Christianity. We'll listen to stories from dozens of women who have experienced the unspoken pain of this holiday, reevaluate the classic Proverbs 31 woman, and reconsider if churches really need a special service for Mother's Day. Lees meer
We hope this episode gives voice to those suffering silently in church communities; we stand with you today and always. And for those who are celebrating today, we celebrate with you and hope you and the mothers in your life have a wonderful day.

38. Complacent Christianity: Memoirs of a Teenage Fundamentalist
5 mei 2024 · 1 uur 45 min
When I (Colin) was a teenager, I wrote a short book and even had it printed. I was so confident that the church at large was complacent and that it desperately needed my message of revival. Ten years later, Janna and I reevaluate one of the last surviving copies of the book and talk through everything I got wrong. We cover what type of music you should listen to, why just going to church makes you a bad Christian, how Patch the Pirate strayed from his solid foundations, why good Christians aren't public fans of Star Wars, and so much more. You won't want to miss this wild ride! Lees meer

37. Q&R #4: Israel and a Christian Response, Part 2
14 april 2024 · 1 uur 11 min
Christianity began as a Jewish sect, but its relationship to Judaism since then has been rocky to say the least. As we enter the sixth month of the Israel-Hamas War, Christians find themselves at odds with each other in their stances on the issue. Within the pages of the Bible, we encounter narratives where God commands the utter destruction of Israel's adversaries. Can we assume these ancient sentiments persist today, or do our scriptures convey a different message? Join us as we reassess both the historical and biblical sides of this discourse. Lees meer
In last week's episode, we laid the foundation for the conflict by digging into the history of Israel and Palestine, exploring their dual claims to the land. This week, we cover some biblical perspectives and offer a Christian response to the modern nation of Israel and to the ongoing war with Hamas. 35. Q&R #3
31 maart 2024 · 1 uur 1 min
If God is not the author of confusion, how can we listen to and coexist with all these other views of the Bible? How does baptism relate to salvation? Did God kill an animal in the garden in place of Adam and Eve? Could God have coded the creation week to match events throughout human history? 34. A Pastor, a Philosopher, and an Ancient King Walk Into a Bar...
24 maart 2024 · 1 uur 2 min
On this week's episode, we time travel Qoheleth into a modern day pub and sit down for a few drinks with the ancient sage and our friends, Randy and Kyle from the A Pastor and a Philosopher Walk into a Bar podcast. We consider what questions we would ask Qoheleth if we could and philosophize on the meaning of life. Nice, easy topics this week lol. In all seriousness, we loved talking with these guys, and we're confident you'll enjoy the discussion. Lees meer

Editor's Notes: Since recording this episode, Randy has announced that he's quit drinking. We were unaware going into the episode, but we support his decision and appreciate his candor in sharing where he's at right now. He and Kyle go into more detail in a recent episode of their podcast here for anyone who's interested.
There is a tiny bit of language in this episode, mostly used as philosophical terminology.

33. Ecclesiastes 5:1-7
17 maart 2024 · 1 uur 8 min
What do dreams and prayer have in common? According to Qoheleth, they are both as out of touch with reality as the ramblings of a fool. As our ever-controversial guide through this introspective journey on life's meaning, Qoheleth challenges the significance of our religious rituals. In his world, the gods (including Yahweh) were real, distant, and capricious. Seeking their favor was perilous, and attempting to deceive them was futile. They might even send an angel to check in on you and monitor your vows (5:6). So why bother interacting with them at all? Find out this week! Lees meer

32. Ecclesiastes 4
10 maart 2024 · 1 uur 21 min
In the last couple chapters, Qoheleth has urged us to cherish the small joys in life, advocating for meaningful connections with loved ones. This week, he confronts the harsh realities faced by those who are denied such simple pleasures due to injustice and exploitation. Then he shifts his focus to the plight of workaholics trapped in a relentless pursuit of career advancement, as well as the challenges faced by extreme introverts who find solace in solitude rather than community. Join us this week as we delve into Qoheleth's wisdom for navigating these diverse circumstances, sparking further dialogue on the pursuit of the good life. Lees meer

31. Ecclesiastes 3:9-22
3 maart 2024 · 1 uur 13 min
So many of us long for something more out of life, something that feels just beyond our reach. Qoheleth sympathizes with us, and he thinks he knows who's to blame for our inability to find lasting happiness — God. God has prevented us from finding deeper meaning in life, and what's more, he's done it for the purpose of making us realize our own delusions of grandeur. At the end of the day, Qoheleth believes we are little different from the other animals God created; the only real distinction being that they seem to know how to enjoy the good life better than we do. So maybe the way we can be the most human is by accepting our animal nature. Lees meer
These are some of Qoheleth's most provocative claims, and they're sure to upset many Christians. So let's get to talking about it!

30. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
25 februari 2024 · 1 uur 12 min
And so we arrive at Ecclesiastes' most well-known passage — Chapter 3's time poem. But what exactly does this list of contrasting times mean? Must these verses only be referenced during periods of transition in life, or do they have a deeper practical wisdom for every day? As you've likely guessed, there's a lot more to this poem than just what's on the surface. Qoheleth has a lot to teach us this week about accepting the cycles of life as they come, reevaluating our modern desire for a work-life balance, considering free will in light of God's sovereignty, and swimming with the current instead of against it. 29. Ecclesiastes 2
18 februari 2024 · 1 uur 33 min
What is the meaning of life? Few questions strike at the core of human existence as succinctly as this. And the responses given will likely change drastically depending on who you ask. Some look for purpose in leaving a lasting legacy, accomplishing great feats, or giving their all for a religious cause. In Ecclesiastes Chapter 2, Qoheleth claims to have tried all that and found every possible endeavor equally incapable of providing any lasting meaning in life. His conclusion invites us to lay aside our delusions and expectations in favor of a simpler view, one that revels in the temporary pleasures we can find in each day. Listen to this week's episode to hear Qoheleth's story and learn his four steps to a happy life! Lees meer

28. Ecclesiastes 1
11 februari 2024 · 1 uur 32 min
Imagine you were given unlimited time and resources to find the best restaurant in the country. How would you even begin your investigation? And how long until you tired of it? Ecclesiastes is this thought experiment on a much larger scale — What if someone who had it all tried to find the surest path to happiness in life? That's exactly what our anti-hero, Qoheleth, does; yet, in the end, he remains unsatisfied. And he's intent on convincing you of his conclusions that life is baffling, impermanent, and anxiety-inducing. But he also suggests that all that may not be as bad you think. Find out why on this week's episode! Lees meer

24. God Isn’t All-Powerful (and That’s the Best News You’ve Heard Today) ft. Thomas Oord
14 januari 2024 · 1 uur 4 min
Few doctrinal beliefs are as widely accepted as God's ability to do anything and everything, also known as omnipotence. It's even in one of the first songs children learn in church — "My God is so big, so strong, and so mighty, there's nothing my God cannot do." But what if the song got it wrong? What if there are some things God actually can't do? In this week's episode, Colin sits down with Dr. Thomas Jay Oord, author of The Death of Omnipotence and the Birth of Amipotence. Tom proposes that since God's nature is love, there are some things God could never do. And by the time they're done talking, you might just realize you already believe that too. Listen in to find out why that's not nearly as crazy as it sounds and why it's actually the best news you'll hear today! Lees meer

23. Unwrapping Christmas Special
24 december 2023 · 1 uur 21 min
The Christmas story is undoubtedly the most popular portion of the entire Bible. Even people who have never stepped foot inside a church could likely give you the highlights. But all that familiarity can lead to us to think we know more about the story than we actually do. If your idea of the Nativity is the virgin Mary giving birth to baby Jesus in a stable surrounded by animals, singing angels, and three wise men on a cold December night, you're imagining a scene that never happened. This week, we compare and contrast the Bible's two Christmas narratives and unwrap some common misconceptions about that first Christmas. Lees meer

If ever there was a chapter of Genesis you'd be tempted to skip, it'd likely be this one. Genesis 10 swarms with names the average person has never even heard before let alone tried to pronounce. But don't change the channel yet! This chapter pivots us from the story of Noah into the story of our next protagonist — Abraham. The names you thought were just there to tie your tongue in knots actually serve a purpose. They introduce us to the main characters of the rest of the Bible, and they are a colorful lot to be sure. 19: Genesis 9
26 november 2023 · 1 uur 23 min
Now that we've passed the crescendo of the Flood narrative, most versions of the story wrap up with the introduction of the rainbow and move on. But we're not quite done with Noah. As the new Adam in a new Creation, he plants himself a new Garden, and we wait to see if he can pass the Garden test or if he will fail like the humans before him. This week, discover the significance of the rainbow hung in the sky, the truth behind what Ham did to Noah, and the reason why Canaan was cursed instead of Ham (and why it has nothing to do with skin color). 18. Genesis 8
19 november 2023 · 57 min
Question: What do the Psalms, the book of Esther, the conquest of Canaan in Joshua, and Jesus' baptism have in common? Lees meer
Answer: They all draw on imagery from the Flood story in Genesis 8.
When biblical authors wanted to make a point about how chaotic life can be or how God is in control over that chaos, they'd often borrow language from the Flood account. Those words then form key hyperlinks across several narratives, inviting us to read the stories from a different angle. Sadly, these details are often missed in English translations, but we want to make sure they don't get missed here! This week we trace out these themes and discuss their significance. Get ready for a whole new take on some familiar Bible stories!

If you said, "Wait, there are scary stories in the Bible?" prepare to be surprised! Christians often get a bad rap for overreacting to Halloween and all things horror. 13. Q&R 1
8 oktober 2023 · 29 min

Oh, and we're planning to do another before the end of the year, so be sure to send in your questions. We love hearing from you! Lees meer

12. Genesis 6
1 oktober 2023 · 1 uur 25 min
Humans were made for Eden-like peace, but, left to our own devices, we tend to compound the violence and errors of previous generations. As Genesis 6 continues the downward spiral from Chapters 3-4, Yahweh works to start over with a new Adam, a vigneron named Noah. Find out why he was probably a priest, maybe a king, and definitely not an evangelist on this week's episode! Lees meer

8. In the Garden of Eden, Baby, Don't You Know That I'll Always Be True? (Genesis 3:7-24)
3 september 2023 · 1 uur 13 min
Arguably no other chapter in the Bible has been as misunderstood and misused as Genesis 3. Even though it's often called the story of "The Fall" and "The Curse," there's not really a fall, and humanity isn't cursed. And the further we go into the chapter, the more our assumptions start to unravel. The serpent doesn't lose its legs. God doesn't ordain male headship over women or add pain to childbirth. And to top it all off, a virgin-born Messiah isn't mentioned anywhere. This one's not anything like what you learned in Sunday school. It's time to cover the rest of Genesis 3 uncut and unfiltered! 7. Snakes. Why'd It Have To Be Snakes? (Genesis 3:1-6)
27 augustus 2023 · 51 min
We're all familiar with children's Sunday school illustrations of the snake wrapped around the apple tree talking to Eve. But what if that's not what happened? What if the snake wasn't really a snake but something more? This week, meet the nachash — a wild, untamed chaos creature from another realm. Who or what is it, and why does it target the newly-created female human? The answers may surprise you. Prepare to experience Genesis 3 like you never have before! Lees meer

5. You're Reading the Creation Story WRONG. Genesis 2:4-14 Explains Why
9 augustus 2023 · 54 min
This week, we begin studying the Bible's story of Creation 2.0, a retelling of the events of Chapter 1 from a different perspective. We burst the bubble on some common assumptions like there being no rain before the Flood, the word "day" having to mean 24 literal hours, Adam's creation from actual dust, and the location of the Garden. We also touch on Ancient Near Eastern creation myths that show a common history with the narrative of Genesis and how the rivers of Eden hyperlink to the rest of the Biblical story. Lees meer

7 augustus 2023 · 54 min
At the heart of some of the most significant ethical debates of our era lies a singular question — What constitutes life? The Bible offers a perspective on the matter that may surprise you. In this week's episode, we cover the Bible's definition of life, practical insights on modern Sabbath rest, fad Bible diets, and how viewing Eden as the first temple might explain God's harsh judgment for Adam and Eve's failure.
