231: A List Charisma & the Impact of Activism on Your Leadership Reputation: JK Rowling
22 maart 2024 · 8 min
Today is Friday which means it’s time for your 5-minute A-List Charisma Booster. Lees meer
Last week covered the introduction to a speech by John Cleese and today we’re taking notes from JK Rowling, the beloved author of the Harry Potter series.
I love how she offers us a compelling example of how introverts can wield charisma in the public eye.
Despite her deeply introverted nature, Rowling has captivated millions of us with her storytelling superpower, advocacy for social issues, and being sincere about herself.
Rowling's life and career exemplify how authenticity, vulnerability, and conviction can elevate introverts to positions of influence and inspire others to action.
By following her example and staying true to themselves, introverts can harness their innate strengths to make a positive impact on the world around us.
Let’s look at 3 A-List Charisma takeaways and calls to action from JK Rowling:
1. **know your true self**: Take a moment to reflect on your own values, passions, and unique perspective. Stay true to yourself in all aspects of your life, whether it's in your personal relationships, professional endeavors, or creative pursuits.
2. **Practice vulnerability**: Challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zone and embrace vulnerability in your interactions with others. Share your experiences, struggles, and aspirations openly and authentically.
3. **Stand up for what you believe in**: Identify causes or issues that are important to you and take action to support them, whether it's through advocacy, volunteering, or simply raising awareness. Stay committed to your convictions, even in the face of adversity or criticism.
Remember, each small step you take toward embracing your authenticity, practicing vulnerability, and standing up for your beliefs has the potential to create ripple effects of positive change in your own life and beyond.

For this episode I’m drawing from not only my own hard-earned knowledge base but also two recent guest episodes that go deeper into these topics: episode 222 with José Ucar, called Build Your Global Influence is fabulous and make sure you listen to last week’s episode 228 with songwriter Drew Lawrence called You Can Create Charisma.
To max out this charisma lesson here are 3 practices for you:
1. Focus on warmth and personal connection. Remember that the next time you want to show others charisma.
For now, don’t worry about presence or credibility, that’s what most of us tend to over index on.
Focus on showing warmth.
2. Share your bloopers. In your stories and even work presentation, share specific aspects of yourself and your experiences, NOT trying to be perfect.
Of course at work your experience needs to relate to your topic.
But say you’re talking about trustworthy AI, share a funny story where you got a crazy response from some generative AI platform.
3. Charisma can be rehearsed a la Robin Williams. Start observing what are the specific characteristics you see that make a person come across as charismatic.
