  7. Max Resnick on Ethereum's Roadmap, Economics, and Alignment Taxes

    30 november 2024 · 56 min

    Afspelen
For today's episode, we’re diving into one of the most controversial conversations around Ethereum’s future—the decisions required to create a truly thriving onchain ecosystem. Lees meer

Joined by Max Resnick, we raised key questions about the future of rollups, appchains, and Ethereum’s economic structure.

Are rollups helping Ethereum grow, or are they parasitic? Should apps like Uniswap stay on Ethereum L1, or is launching their own chain inevitable? How do we address the growing cost of security while keeping Ethereum accessible and composable for all?

    Max answered each quite thoroughly.

A central theme was the idea of "alignment taxes"—a proposal to share Ethereum’s security costs across apps and rollups proportionally to the value they derive. This concept challenges how we think about onchain value and whether Ethereum can continue relying solely on staking rewards funded by ETH issuance.

Could this idea lead to a more sustainable and equitable ecosystem? Or does it risk driving activity to other chains with lower costs?

Another major focus was the tension between composability and scalability. Rollups have unlocked incredible potential, but they also create fragmentation. Asynchronous composability and interoperability are improving, but are they enough to match the seamless experience of keeping everything on one chain? Meanwhile, usecase-specific chains like Uniswap’s new chain raise questions about whether Ethereum is providing the tools apps need—or if apps are branching out to secure their own interests as L2s?

Finally, we dove into rollup economics and sequencing. Single-sequencer models have been criticized for being extractive and centralizing market power. The discussion explored how ideas like multiple proposers, deterministic ordering, and app-specific sequencing could create fairer systems for users and applications alike.

    This is a must-watch conversation.

For today's episode, a thanksgiving day special, we are breaking down an evolving model in the crypto space that looks beyond traditional VC funding. Lees meer

Legion, a platform built from the ground up to address issues with token launches, is reshaping how communities and projects interact with each other.

We are teaming up with Legion to bring early stage opportunities to our community of amazing listeners and readers.

In this conversation with Anil Lulla, CEO of Delphi Digital and Fabrizio Giobardo, co-founder of Legion, we explore why Legion is poised to explode in traction as market participants and power users are more eager than ever for an era of fair token distribution.

    ICOs are back (kinda).

The need for change is clear: traditional launches with high fully diluted valuations (FDVs) and low circulating supply have left many retail participants with little access and less opportunity than before. This broken model often leads to initial surges in value but rarely fosters long-term, engaged communities that sustain projects.

Legion, however, has a different vision. By focusing on distribution to contributors with a range of assets—whether it's social capital, technical skill, or financial backing—the platform is giving projects tools to create robust, community-driven ecosystems from day one.

The best part? They are just starting now with an influx of new teams coming to the platform. Looking forward, Legion has ambitious plans...

By adding reputation-driven incentives and achievements, Legion aims to continue rewarding meaningful participation, allowing contributors to build influence over time. With a clear focus on sustainable growth and quality community-building, Legion is setting the stage for a new standard in crypto token launches—one that’s based on value and resilience.

  9. Tarun Chitra and Jon Charbonneau on Solana vs. Ethereum Valuation Outlook

    27 november 2024 · 35 min

    Afspelen
For today's episode, we were joined by Tarun & Jon to take a closer look at one of the most compelling debates in crypto: The valuation, 'moneyness', collateral asset viability, and onchain usage of ETH vs. SOL. Lees meer

Is there a real chance that Solana could flip Ethereum in the next several years?

Ethereum, with its ETF advantage and rollup-centric focus, is standing strong but may face hurdles in maintaining its lead. Solana, on the other hand, is rapidly onboarding builders and capturing liquidity, though challenges like token inflation and VC token distribution are posing strong headwinds.

We’ll also touch on the bigger picture: how collateral utility, tokenomics, and market behavior influence the monetary premium of these assets.

This episode was particularly interesting because of the dynamic of Tarun from his math background and Jon with his research and venture background.

Ethereum’s narrative is more than market cycles—it’s about scalability, usability, and vision. The rollup-centric roadmap has become the centerpiece of its scaling strategy, enabling L2s to contribute back to the ecosystem while extending Ethereum’s reach. At the same time, the importance of improving the L1, scaling danksharding and fixing interoperability has sparked deeper conversations around aligning incentives and building standards that will sustain long-term growth.

During the pod, we also discuss the next frontier: AI agents. These are poised to dominate onchain activity, demanding exponential blockspace scaling and driving Ethereum’s evolution into a global value layer.

In today’s piece, we’ll explore what it takes to onboard the next billion users, how Ethereum aligns the efforts of its community and L2s, and what the rise of AI means for the future of blockchains. Along the way, we’ll reflect on how Ethereum has managed to balance technical innovation with cultural staying power.

  12. Andre Cronje on DeFi, Sonic Network, and His New Apps

Welcome to a blast from the past. Lees meer

    Imagine this:

You're on your laptop in summer 2020, when you see a message from a friend "new yield farm just opened called Yearn, you can only farm it for one week with DAI."

You ape in. The rest is history, and DeFi was (more or less) born.

That was the early stages of Andre's journey into DeFi. For his latest reappearance, we will take you on a deep dive into his journey, what he feels about DeFi today, the new apps, and of course Sonic - a revamped approach to Fantom that brings high throughput, developer-first incentives, and a unique fee redistribution model to the DeFi space.

At the core of Sonic’s approach is a shift in value distribution. Rather than centralizing fees with validators or sequencers, Sonic redirects 90% of fees back to the DApps that generate them. This means developers can capture more value, and users benefit from a faster, lower-cost environment.

We argued whether or not this was bullish for appchains or not, following his written piece "to appchain or not".

Moreover, Andre introduced Carmen, an EVM-compatible database built to optimize performance across L1 and L2 ecosystems. We also talked about some of his new app ideas, such asWitnessNet, a ZK-powered Oracle network that aims to bring data verification to new levels by authenticating HTTPS data origins onchain, undercollateralized lending, onchain credit, and a new gamified DeFi protocol.

Today's pod was one for the books. Enjoy.

  13. Is Beam Chain Good For Ethereum? With Justin Drake

    19 november 2024 · 1 uur 1 min

Today, we’re unpacking Beam Chain, a proposal by Justin Drake that’s sparked wide-ranging discussions in the Ethereum community. Lees meer

Andy and Robbie sat down with Justin in Bangkok to discuss this in person, just one day after his presentation.

Beam chain aims to accelerate Ethereum’s roadmap by introducing a massive hard fork specifically aimed at the consensus layer. Whether you’ve heard about the buzz surrounding single-slot finality, programmable execution sharding, or the ambitious plans for full snarkification, this explainer is for you.

(Especially if you have questions about the length of time this may take, as many of you were wondering why it would take 4+ years).

At its core, Beam Chain is a proposal to improve the consensus layer of the L1 with snarkification, lower slot times, more usage of ZK VMs, higher gas limits and more.

Of course, every ambitious proposal brings challenges. Some in the community see Beam Chain as a bold leap forward, while others question whether it’s ambitious enough in the timeframe presented. Feedback has ranged from requests for faster timelines to discussions about the balance between ossification—Ethereum entering a “maintenance mode”—and the need for continued innovation to compete with other L1s.

By the end of this pod, you’ll have a deeper understanding of how Beam Chain fits into Ethereum’s long-term plans, its implications for L1 and rollup-centric development, and why Justin Drake sees this as a pivotal step toward completing Ethereum’s roadmap by the end of the decade.

Whether you’re here to evaluate its technical merits or simply to see what the future of Ethereum might hold, this a pod you won't want to miss.

Memecoins are absolutely dominating mindshare in today's crypto economy. While they might be easy to dismiss as passing fads, there appears to be something bigger happening here which we wanted to explore. Lees meer

So, we sat down with Arthur Hayes and Murad Mahmudov to discuss the unique structure of memecoins as a new asset class designed for a generation deeply immersed in social media and digital interaction: Zoomers themselves.

We started discussing the recent Trump victory and the idea of a DeFi renaissance, with revenue generating cryptoassets being potentially favorable. However, both Murad and Arthur had thoughts which suggested this isn't exactly the case...for now. We went on to discuss how memecoins bypass the technical complexity of DeFi, focusing instead on creating spaces where online communities gather, trade, and rally around shared ideals. As macro forces like money printing and inflation reshape global markets, memecoins have been one of the largest beneficiaries in terms of growth.

We asked Murad how he plans to exit, why Arthur is an ETH maxi vs. Murad's BTC maximalism, the Ethereum vs. Solana discourse, as well as the speculation on AI memecoins.

From Murad's take on the potential for memecoins to sustain multiple market cycles to his bold predictions on AI’s role in DeFi’s future, this discussion was very straight-to-the-point, no BS.

Today’s piece dives into a unique approach to building lasting connections in Web3, using pre-exisiting data from prominent social media platforms. With Camp, we’re looking at a shift from single-transaction incentives to real, ongoing rewards that invite users to share their data, all while staying flexible with user privacy.

Camp takes a different path, aiming to let users own and even monetize their online identities by bridging Web2 data with Web3 experiences. For those who’ve seen Web3 apps struggle with retaining users, this could be the key to bringing in and keeping the next wave of on-chain activity.

Through their collaboration with EigenDA, Camp's L2 will be highly perfomant and also will be joining the superchain.

We touched deeper on personalized data feeds to retention-based models for building better onchain experiences. Camp’s vision is to add depth to onchain user flows – a layer many Web3 applications still lack due to restrictions of blockchains.

Let’s get into the details and explore how Camp is paving the way for a more connected, data-rich crypto ecosystem.

  18. What Is The Next Phase of Onchain Crypto? With Predicate

    4 november 2024 · 51 min

    Afspelen
Welcome to episode 20 of EigenLayer Unlocked. Lees meer

In today's video, we dive into the mechanics behind Predicate, led by Nikhil Raghuveera, and their goal to streamline transaction prerequisites across crypto.

This idea of “transaction prerequisites” may sound a bit like a mouthful, but the way we are thinking about it is bringing the crypto onchain UX far closer to that of the internet.

Predicate is on a mission to bring onchain transactions up to speed with global compliance and security needs. By focusing on transaction prerequisites— essential conditions that make or break the legitimacy of a transaction—they’re simplifying the way onchain apps can interact with users on the front facing level.

    So, why EigenLayer?

Well, by using EigenLayer, Predicate taps into a decentralized operator network that checks, verifies, and issues signatures without the need for centralized infrastructure or a unique token. This network not only supports prerequisites like risk scoring and collateral validation but also provides the flexibility for applications to customize these checks based on their specific needs.

Using cryptoeconomic security allows Predicate to expand the functionality of onchain UX and provide verifiable, unique transaction logic.

With crypto’s growing reach into the global economy, Predicate’s work aims to ensure that crypto apps can operate with an easy UX while staying compliant in many cases.

Let’s unpack how Predicate uses the power of onchain and offchain data to create a more robust onchain UX.

For this episode, we are tackling the fragmentation problem head on with the story of Polymer and their north star of building an onchain experience where different execution environments communicate securely, transparently, and in a way users don’t even need to think about.

As you know, we've been pushing the concept of chain abstraction as a key pillar to move into the internet-like UX era of crypto.

Polymer and Peter share this vision as their love for IBC is inspired by the neutrality and accessibility of TCP/IP. Peter explained how Polymer’s vision goes beyond the typical token bridges that we see today to creating a connectivity hub as an L2 using EigenDA.

We’ll explore what makes Polymer’s approach different, from their core focus on interoperability standards to their integration with EigenDA for secure, cost-effective state proofing, why they see so many parallels to the internet era and how they’re applying those lessons to Web3 today.

  20. How Abstract Plans to Dominate Consumer Crypto

    2 november 2024 · 25 min

Welcome back to the live studio podcasts from Singapore for EigenLayer Unlocked, this time for a conversation with Luca from Abstract with a focus on building the next era of consumer-friendly blockchain experiences. Lees meer

As you know, we have been quite bullish on chains which are usecase-specific with a target market and segment of focus. Abstract is designed to prioritize user experience, aiming to be the leading chain that truly puts consumer needs at the forefront.

As early supporters of Pudgy Penguins and Luca, we don't think there's many better teams positioned to carve a blue ocean in this market.

Luca's vision includes creating what he calls a “Crypto Disneyland” – a place where onchain experiences enable engaging, fun, and user-friendly applications for the everyday person. It’s a bold shift in approach, one that moves away from the typical DeFi-centric models.

At the heart of Abstract’s strategy is a “consumer portal” that unifies applications, providing a seamless journey for users from discovery to interaction.

This streamlined approach is all about removing the barriers that typically cause high user drop-off rates in crypto, making it easy for anyone to navigate from one application to another.

We also discussed their collaboration with Eigenlayer, specifically for EigenDA. Luca mentioned he wants Abstract to focus on user-facing distribution while leaving the backend infrastructure needs to Eigenlayer’s infra stack. They will also utilize ZK Sync's elastic chain interoperability infra.

As Abstract gears up for its mainnet launch, Luca envisions a crypto ecosystem focused on everyday people is the next logical step to bring meaningful, mainstream adoption to the space.

Welcome to episode 16 of EigenLayer Unlocked, for a further look into the interoperability endgame. Lees meer

In today's video, we are focused on the technical design of Hyperlane's open framework for interoperability.

Joined by Jon Kol, we touched on why we believe that modular, horizontal scaling is key for the future of the crypto space and building towards that future is where Hyperlane is headed.

Recently, Hyperlane announced 'Supelane' in collaboration with Velodrome that brings consistent security across Superchain L2s. Superlane aims to create unified experiences with customizable security that scales as each chain develops and grow over time. We also discussed Hyperlane’s ISMs, which allow developers to pick and choose their security parameters, from basic setups to more sophisticated ZK bridging.

What was really particularly interesting was their idea of enabling insurance for bridging using EigenLayer.

Hyperlane is working to enable restakers to restake cryptoassets as a form of insurance for bridging as well as a security marketplace that lets you easily tap into trusted operators. We first heard of this idea earlier in the presentation series from Othentic, and its great to see it being built out as 'restaked interop' in Hyperlane.

As you know, the interoperability fight is raging on and we are all doing what we can to play a significant role in the future of a composable crypto ecosystem.

We're fighting the good fight, alongside great teams like Hyperlane.

The “internet of proving” is a network where ZK proofs are the centerpiece of all blockchain interactions onchain. We discussed the rise of proof markets onchain, why Lagrange is building their own prover network, and why they have decided to build their tech stack as an EigenLayer AVS.

Lagrange is one of the earliest AVSs on EigenLayer, powering their prover network. We touched on their technical choice to build a double auction mechanism—an efficient way to match ZK proof buyers and sellers, making sure the market remains as steady as possible while keeping costs low for applications and consumers of ZK proofs.

We also discussed some particular topics around liveness, economic security, and where the reliance on EigenLayer comes into play.

  23. How Inco Is Bringing Privacy Onchain using FHE

Welcome back to Eigenlayer Unlocked for episode 15. Today, we’re exploring a concept that has intrigued cryptographers for decades but is now edging closer to practical use onchain — Fully Homomorphic Encryption, or FHE. Lees meer

We had the pleasure of speaking with Remi Gai from Inco, who walked us through how FHE is making its mark in crypto. Just recently, they announced a partnership with Circle as well to use FHE with Circle's stablecoin offerings. Think of FHE as the ability to perform computations on encrypted data without ever decrypting it, its better than *just* using ZK or MPC.

Inco’s universal confidential computing network is looking to tackle one of blockchain’s biggest features, yet at the same time one of the biggest challenges: overwhelming transparency. By allowing developers to build with encrypted types and perform private computations directly onchain, they’re opening up new opportunities for usecases which just won't have PMF in a truly open, transparent environment.

Think about your mortgage details. Or you car loan. Or your bank account.

The conversation also dove into the unique blend of FHE with Cosmos SDK and how dual-staking with EigenLayer could bring an additional layer of security and guarantees through restaked ETH. We discussed the low level network architecture to blending privacy, performance, and scalability in a way that keeps things transparent, yet confidential where needed.

So whether you’re curious about private AMMs, secure payrolls, or even onchain gaming, this discussion will give you a fresh perspective on how FHE could be a core part of the future blockchain stack.

  24. Why Crypto Is Following A Similar Path As Cloud Computing with Polymer

Welcome to episode 14 of EigenLayer Unlocked, for a deeper dive into the interop landscape of crypto with a tight parallel to the internet experience. Lees meer

Our focus today is on Polymer Labs, for a technical presentation with Bo Du. Polymer is dedicated to making onchain interop as smooth as possible by acting as the "messaging queue" that acts as an interop layer for various rollups. By leveraging EigenLayer's DA, they’re scaling interop capacity to bring down costs and speed up transactions, enabling them to be a bridging hub for a potential future with thousands of L2s.

The current hurdles of high latency, cost inefficiency, and complex data processing make it tough for blockchains to match the scale of traditional Web2 services. Bo has a very unique perspective on this landscape as he draws many analogies to traditional cloud computing throughout this presentation.

Ultimately, the interoperability puzzle is about creating a modular architecture that can grow as more chains come online. Polymer wants to lean into the growing network effects of L2s, so we can collectively reduce time to market, and build the foundation for many chains to thrive in an interconnected world.

  25. How To Think About Restaking Economics with Tarun Chitra

Welcome to episode 13 of EigenLayer Unlocked, for a very insightful conversation about building the correct mental model for restaking and crypto-economic security. Lees meer

We had the opportunity to sit down with Tarun Chitra from Gauntlet, who brought mental models, analogies, and key information to the table about how restaking mechanisms work, what makes EigenLayer's economics operate, and why incentives play a crucial role in this evolving ecosystem.

We kicked things off by exploring the concept of valuing restaked security from one of Tarun's recent blog posts. Tarun explained how the decisions made by node operators—especially around which AVSs they allocate to—can have a ripple effect across the network.

It’s not just about individual services; these choices can influence the broader stability of the ecosystem.

A key part of our discussion was understanding the risks of cascading attacks. Tarun highlighted how failures in one AVS can impact others, leading to potential systemic issues. To prevent this, it’s essential to design security measures that address both local (individual service) and global (network-wide) risks. We discussed the analogy towards traditional finance, mortgages, and bonds to help conceptualize these concepts.

One of the most interesting points was about EigenLayer’s introduction of a new security model featuring "unique stake." This model helps mitigate risks by allowing specific ETH reserves to be slashable only by particular services, providing a layer of isolation and addressing concerns about overlapping slashing risks.

We also discussed the power law as it applies to AVSs—some thriving by transitioning from incentive-based models to sustainable revenue streams, while others might not make the cut longer-term.

If you’re looking to get a clearer understanding of how restaking economics works, this is the podcast for you.

Following up on his earlier thoughts around modularity being a meme, we decided to bring Toghrul on to discuss his mental model for shared security and restaking.

In the crypto world, shared security is often misunderstood as a term. In today's presentation, Toghrul walks us through why the lack of full shared security isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and how it opens up more opportunities for experimentation across L2s, restaking protocols, and other onchain systems. He also made a point to define the four key characteristics of shared security as it relates to cryptoeconomic systems.

We touched on the idea of avoiding full interdependence amongst two separate systems which means individual failures are isolated, ensuring the wider ecosystem remains secure. However, this also breaks the core messaging for shared security, lending itself to a "partial shared security" terminology.

Overall, this was a really good talk and towards the end we got into usecases, risks, and how Toghrul is viewing the restaking landscape.

Today, we’re taking a closer look at Nuffle Labs’ fast finality layer, NFFL, an EigenLayer AVS that addresses state fragmentation, user experience issues, and security concerns amongst L2s. Nuffle Labs, led by founders Altan and Firat, comes from a strong technical background, starting with NEAR DA, and they’re known for making things faster, cheaper, and easier for rollups.

But, that didn't stop Andy from grilling them about their tradeoffs, how they are going to write their slashing contracts, what the slashing rules are, and where there are chokepoints in their design.

Their latest focus, NFFL, leverages the security of Ethereum through EigenLayer to give rollups a universal finality layer, slashing costs and improving interoperability. By using of restaked ETH, rollups can rely on cryptoeconomic security for faster state attestations.

They also hinted at an upcoming product, which was partly a tease, albeit quite interesting.

Othentic’s journey started with building their own AVS, and along the way, they faced every complexity imaginable. So, they created the Othentic Stack, making it easier for builders to get their AVSs off the ground without having to reinvent the wheel.

So, what exactly is an AVS? Think of it as a decentralized computing service that performs complex tasks off-chain while verifying the results on-chain. This approach aligns with Ethereum's modular roadmap, where computations are offloaded to reduce onchain load, yet still securely validated. Unlike rollups, which focus on state transitions, AVSs are ideal for services where computation needs validation without the need for continuous state agreement.

AVSs open doors for a variety of use cases—from oracles to machine learning models. Othentic simplifies the entire setup, letting teams focus on their core products while the stack takes care of everything on the infra side.

Our chat also explores how AVSs differ from rollups and why this distinction matters for developers choosing between the two (or better yet, use both!). With more than 30 builders already using the Othentic Stack, it’s clear there’s a lot happening here.

If you're a builder looking to launch an AVS, you need to speak to Othentic.

  31. How Espresso Aims To Solve The L2 Fragmentation Problem

Welcome to Episode 7 of EigenLayer Unlocked, where we’re exploring the concept of cross-chain composability -- and in particular, the fragmentation of the modular ecosystem. Lees meer

This is the key to unlocking the full vision of Ethereum's rollup-centric roadmap facilitating coordination between different chains, and Espresso is at the forefront of making it happen. Robbie had a very technical conversation with Ellie, a researcher and engineer at Espresso, who shared insights into how their protocol is addressing one of the modular ecosystems biggest challenges: bringing true composability to rollups and app chains.

Espresso’s approach centers around a sequencing marketplace and a fast finality layer. These two products enable different rollups to coordinate sequencing without sacrificing their sovereignty. Rollups can sell their sequencing rights through a combinatorial auction, allowing them to maximize revenue while still maintaining control over their operations.

The addition of EigenLayer’s restaking mechanism further enhances this process, simplifying sequencing while leveraging Ethereum’s strong economic security for guarantees.

Fast finality is another key feature of Espresso, reducing latency for cross-chain transactions. Their consensus protocol, Hotshot, ensures transactions are finalized in less than four seconds, providing strong guarantees for atomic cross-chain operations without waiting for Ethereum settlement.

Espresso’s marketplace also ensures that sovereignty is preserved by redistributing auction proceeds back to the rollups (if you watched the ASS podcast, then you know we are extremely bullish on redistributing this to apps). Rollups can set floor prices to ensure they’re always getting the revenue they deserve, even if they opt to sequence themselves.

This piece will give you a detailed look at how Espresso is rethinking composability and making appchains a more viable option in the current semi-isolationist reality we live in onchain today.

  33. Why ZK Verification is Ethereum's Final Frontier with Aligned

Welcome to episode 4 of EigenLayer Unlocked, for a focus into the final frontier of Ethereum scaling: Inexpensive and lightning fast zk proof verification. Lees meer

In today’s presentation, we break down how ZK proofs allow us to compress complex computations into small, verifiable proofs, drastically reducing the need for re-execution across Ethereum. We were joined by Diego Kingston of Aligned Layer to explain how this helps solve one of Ethereum’s biggest challenges: scaling while keeping proof verification costs managable.

One of the core ideas we discussed is proof recursion, where multiple proofs can be bundled together into one, reducing verification overhead and making onchain processes more efficient.

We also explore how EigenLayer plays into this, enabling projects to offload proof verification from Ethereum’s main layer to a more specialized layer without sacrificing security. This allows Ethereum to avoid bottlenecks and avoid competing for block space, all while keeping costs lower and scaling higher.

ZK verification might seem like a niche area, but it’s rapidly becoming a foundational piece of infrastructure for onchain apps which want to benefit from the security guarantees of validity proofs, as well as EigenLayer.

    Lets dive in.

Alongside Amrit Kumar, we walk through the three main pillars of AltLayer's future vision: Squad, a decentralized sequencer set; Vital, a challenger network for fraud detection; and Mach, a fast finality layer that ensures rollup transactions are confirmed more quickly.

We took technical stabs at the risk vectors for these operations, the demand from operators to provide restaked capital to the rollups, where the technical tradeoffs exist, and much more.

    Amrit provided well thought answers.

These components are modular, so rollup builders can pick and choose what fits their needs. The flexibility of the system means projects aren’t locked into a one-size-fits-all solution. Whether it’s reducing reliance on centralized sequencers or speeding up finality times without needing Ethereum’s long wait periods, restaked rollups provide a wide range of tools. Amrit also emphasizes how this approach can make an impact on the current lackluster utility of L2 tokens, potentially giving them utility beyond governance.

This one was a technical dive into some of the core concepts which comprise rollups, and how utilizing EigenLayer's AVS technology, we can see improvements to their technical designs.

The magic of ZK is being able to conduct complex off-chain computations and then verifiably attest to their validity onchain. This is the thesis for coprocessors.

Brevis is introducing a solution that tackles one of the most frustrating bottlenecks for DeFi builders—limited onchain computational power. With Brevis, developers can offload complex computations to off-chain environments, keeping blockchain efficiency intact while still remaining verifiable using ZK proofs.

Have you heard of the saying verifiable computation? This is what ZK enables.

During today’s breakdown, we’ll explore how Brevis works hand-in-hand with EigenLayer, leveraging their AVS system for enhanced security and cost-efficiency. Brevis' ZK coprocessor also allows DeFi protocols to easily access historical onchain data, unlocking features like dynamic fee adjustments based on user trading history—amidst others.

We ask Mo, where he anticipates the yield coming from, the demand for Brevis, as well as how he is thinking about slashing, slashing rules, and slashing contracts.

    Afspelen
Welcome to the 1st episode of EigenLayer Unlocked. This episode is meant to be a primer into how restaking fundamentally works, the key players in the restaking system, and why EigenLayer is leading this category today. Lees meer

At its core, restaking allows users to earn additional rewards by taking on slashing risks, offering a way to maximize risk-adjusted returns. EigenExplorer introduces a novel concept through operator quorums (now referred to as operator sets), which bring more granularity and customization to how services, operators, and stakers interact.

These operator sets create tiers of services, allowing for more tailored, efficient staking choices that can yield vastly different outcomes depending on the strategy employed.

One of the standout points in today’s discussion is the direct liquid restaking system EigenExplorer is building, designed to simplify decision-making for stakers by enabling them to delegate assets to specific services. This streamlines the process, making it easier for stakers to manage risk and rewards without diving into complex configurations.

Additionally, strategy managers play a crucial role in helping stakers navigate this space, acting as market makers who optimize yield and manage risks across different services. As the market matures, data transparency and better tools for managing operator quorums will be key to improving market efficiency and ensuring everyone benefits from these innovations.

As the first episode in the series, we wanted to prioritize an understanding of restaking and its core parts. Throughout the next several weeks, we will dive into the deep technical weeds of AVSs and rollups using EigenDA.

The Ethereum Foundation has been very active in the public discourse, notably with Vitalik's return back to X and engaging in the technical debates about the Ethereum roadmap. Lees meer

Following our recent podcast with Justin Drake about Ethereum's roadmap, we set out to understand one key component of that discussion in further detail. This component? Real-time proving, formal verification, and building a more resilient smart contract environment for Ethereum.

While it might not get as much spotlight as the latest protocol launch or governance upgrade, formal verification is a crucial foundation for ensuring that the infrastructure we rely on is secure, efficient, and free from catastrophic errors (and thus, exploits). It’s about verifying that the code we trust with billions of dollars works exactly as intended, which is especially important as we transition from optimistic rollups to full ZK rollups, with no backup.

In this discussion with Alexander Hicks from the Ethereum Foundation, we explore the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to apply formal verification to ZKVMs. This approach is designed to make ZKVMs more scalable, secure, and ultimately more reliable for users and developers alike.

Formal verification ensures that every step of a complex system like a ZKVM is mathematically proven to be correct, offering a new layer of security to the onchain world. Alexander walks us through his journey from computer security and mathematics into the blockchain space, and how this background helped shape his work on formal verification at Ethereum.

With a $20 million budget for builders and a long-term focus on sustainable solutions, Ethereum’s formal verification program is aiming to safeguard not only ZK rollups but potentially Ethereum L1 itself.

Whether you’re a founder, builder, developer or an onchain maxi looking to get involved this one is for you.

  42. Why Solver Rebalancing is An Untapped Market For The Intent-Centric Future

We've been really honing in on the intent-centric future with regards to chain abstraction in recent podcasts, as its something we are particularly excited for and believe in. Lees meer

One of the interesting aspects of the chain abstracted stack is that it requires a ton of collaboration amongst different players to fulfill the endgame of a smooth UX with chain agnosticism.

Today, we're taking a closer look into this landscape with an in-person interview in Singapore. Andy sat down with Arjun Bhuptani to discuss Everclear, a protocol designed to tackle one of the most pressing challenges in solving and intents—rebalancing liquidity efficiently across multiple chains.

In the early days of Connext, Arjun realized this issue of helping solvers manage inventory was going to become a pressing one in the future. As he grew belief in the thesis that capital rebalancing and liquidity flow are major bottlenecks, especially when it comes to smaller, niche (or long-tail) chains, he made the tough choice to reposition to build Everclear.

In this piece, we’re going to break down Everclear’s approach to solving this problem through intent-based bridging, a concept that’s gradually taking center stage in the crypto space. Instead of relying on the traditional, expensive bridging models that involve validator sets or multisigs, Everclear uses intents—enabling fast, trustless atomic swaps between chains while keeping fees low and security intact, via offchain market makers.

We’ll also be covering Everclear's unique approach to netting liquidity across chains, akin to something like Visa’s netting mechanism.

Plus, we'll touch on the growing relevance of long-tail chains and how Everclear’s rebalancing system could play a pivotal role in expanding liquidity access to smaller, more specialized ecosystems.

Finally, at the end we'll touch on the new vote bonding token model for Everclear, and why they settled on this economic model.

Another technical debate served up for you guys around the redistribution of MEV to apps, the tradeoffs of sequencing for apps, composability, LVR and more. Lees meer

We had the pleasure of chatting with Yuki Yuminaga & Alex Nezbolin, two gigabrains, about the tradeoffs in the app specific sequencing (ASS) paradigm. This concept was introduced by Yuki from Sorella Labs, which aims to optimize how transactions are processed onchain.

In this discussion, we explored how ASS allows customized transaction sequencing tailored to individual app goals. This opens up new possibilities for LPs to capture more value, addressing one of the key issues they face— MEV via arbitrage losses due to slower price updates onchain compared to centralized exchanges like Binance.

But, is the tradeoff worth it?

Composability plays a huge role in supporting uninformed flow, according to Alex. If we move to an ASS model, the loss of this flow could be highly detrimental to LPs. This flow is retail trades that aren’t driven by arbitrage and often represent a key revenue source for LPs. Alex argues that maintaining this composability while lowering LVR is critical for the future of DeFi liquidity.

However, Yuki managed to explain how builder commitments and shared sequencing also open up a new design space for sequencing.

This was a highly technical podcast and a really really good primer for all things ASS, LVR, MEV and more.

Stick around as we break down the technical aspects and what they mean for the future of onchain liquidity, where builders deploy their applications, and a ton more.

There has been a lot of buzz around their approach, especially with the lock drop mechanism, which had a few heads turning. Rather than taking the usual route of an claimable airdrop, they’ve prioritized stability and community-building by rolling out a non-transferable token first.

This cautious but forward-thinking approach has opened up the conversation around how projects like Eigenlayer can ensure long-term value for both builders and users - and also enabled the ecosystem of AVS builders to work on their tech for another 6 months or so.

In today's special podcast from Singapore, Andy sat down with Vyas Krishnan to discuss the transferability of the token, the new layers of utility being introduced, what social consensus problems within the Ethereum ecosystem Eigenlayer is solving, and the future of Eigenlayer's ecosystem.

    Let’s get into it.

If we want the institutions to come onchain, the current security measures are ripe for an improvement. Lees meer

The state of exploits and sequencing for L2s, in their eyes, is like the wild wild west and is extremely risky (if not straight up impossible due to regulations).

Today, we're diving into onchain sequencing security via an interesting concept called "safe sequencing" from Firewall.

We sat down with Devin Purhar, co-founder of Firewall, to get the inside scoop on how they’re tackling one of the biggest roadblocks to mainstream crypto adoption .

So what’s the deal with sequencing today and how can we make it "safe" in the lens of Devan?

The safe sequencer is a plug-and-play security layer that integrates directly into L2s. It’s not just another audit or monitoring tool; this system filters out malicious transactions in real-time, aiming for an endgame of a "zero exploits" environment. We discuss the usage of AI and ZK proofs and how this combination creates a new standard for rollup security.

But, is there other centralization risks at play with introducing a new blockchain for sequencing?

How will this get traction if there are more complexities at play?

Does the market really care about the security of sequencing, as its a very complex topic?

These answered, and more, in today's podcast where we explore why building a more secure onchain ecosystem could be the key differentiator for rollups going forward.

    Enjoy.

  47. Solving The Extensibility Problem with Griffin Dunaif of Halliday

In today’s piece, we’re taking a closer look at Halliday, a project that’s working to simplify and automate one of the most crucial yet complex aspects of DeFi—commerce across multiple chains. Lees meer

Led by Griffin Dunaif, Halliday is focused on building the infrastructure that enables seamless value exchange between different blockchain networks, tackling the challenge of automating asset transfers, on-ramping fiat, and bridging the gaps between L1s, L2s, and L3s.

Commerce Automation is rooted in the idea that digital spaces—much like cities—require a balance of culture and commerce to thrive. While the blockchain world has no shortage of vibrant communities, the infrastructure to support efficient, automated transactions across chains is still in its early stages. Halliday is stepping in to address this gap by automating these processes, making it easier to transfer assets, manage liquidity, and integrate fiat into onchain systems.

One of the key highlights from Griffin’s vision is multi-chain expansion. With the number of blockchains set to grow exponentially, Halliday is preparing for a future with millions of interconnected chains. The focus here isn’t just on basic interoperability but on automating complex, multi-hop transaction workflows—think of going from fiat to a stablecoin on an L1, bridging to an L2, and then settling on an L3.

Halliday aims to make this process seamless and automated, allowing users and developers to interact with different ecosystems without the usual technical complexities. As they gear up for their protocol release in 2025, Halliday is positioning itself to be a crucial player in the evolving landscape of multi-chain commerce, driving the next phase of DeFi growth.

Our first interview with Adrian was probably in 2020 or 2021 at a conference, so it was a pleasure to catch up with him again. Lees meer

This time, we are diving into a fresh take on some key themes in onchain development that are worth paying attention to. Adrian, who has been in the trenches of crypto development since 2016, gives us some deep insights into intent-based systems, how they compare to traditional transaction models, and why privacy is more essential than ever.

We have been learning about intents for some time already, but this podcast further strengthened our thesis that intents are here to stay and will likely become the de facto way people interact onchain.

In this piece, we explore how Anoma’s architecture is addressing major challenges like privacy and the inefficiencies of global consensus. What stands out is the shift from transaction execution to defining intents, giving users more control over how and when their state transitions are settled.

You’ll also learn about the value of user-centric chains, where state is only shared when necessary, and why Adrian believes that localized state and privacy-preserving actions are going to be key in the future of crypto. Nomada’s launch, in particular, brings this to life by providing asset-agnostic privacy solutions for DeFi users who are already concerned about onchain privacy.

The majority of the conversation was centered around intents, but we did discuss Namada at the end.

    Hope you enjoy.

  49. Appchains Vs. L1s: What is Crypto's Endgame? With Illia Polosukhin

    25 september 2024 · 58 min

One of our favorite pods as we were able to tackle two birds with one stone, the appchains vs. sharded L1s debate as well as key insights into the state of AI from Illia Polosukhin. Lees meer

The key questions we discussed is whether apps should continue to rely on shared, sharded chains, like NEAR, or if there’s a stronger case for each app eventually becoming its own chain.

This raises important considerations around sovereignty, composability, and scalability.

At the core of this discussion is the idea that users want more control over their assets and a seamless, composable experience across different platforms. While singlechain solutions like OP Stack Chains or Cosmos SDK offer some flexibility, they often face significant scalability and interoperability challenges. This is where sharding, especially in protocols like Near, can provide a more scalable solution without sacrificing user experience. Their recent advancements, such as Chain Signatures and Nightshade V2, are paving the way for more efficient scaling.

But, isn't this the same thing? Where do you draw the line between apps sharing global state vs. composability and sovereignty?

    What about customizability?

For the first half of the pod, Andy and Illia went back and forth debating the tradeoffs of appchains vs. sharded L1s, and ended up on common ground. Then, for the second half Robbie, Andy, and Illia discussed the rise of user-owned AI.

They discussed how the role of AI is becoming increasingly relevant in the blockchain space. The concept of "user-owned AI" is emerging, where AI tools could help reduce the complexity of building and maintaining infrastructure while giving users more control over their interactions. This shift towards AI could also play a significant role in improving security through formal verification, ensuring that smart contracts and protocols are more resilient against vulnerabilities.

We had the chance to ask Illia a ton of questions about his vision for AI going forward and …
