Today's episode with Zaheer from Split Capital, we dive into the nuanced strategies of running a liquid fund in this ever-evolving crypto market. Lees meer

With the introduction of Bitcoin ETFs and institutional investors gaining more influence, the market's dynamics have become more complex and less predictable. Zaheer walks us through how Split Capital adapts to shifts in market conditions and why understanding the current landscape is crucial for anyone serious about crypto investing. We explore his investment style, which emphasizes flexibility and a regime-agnostic approach, and what Zaheer’s take on credit expansion, which he cites as a critical factor limiting crypto asset growth. We also discuss DeFi’s trajectory from 2020’s lofty ambitions to a more mature, regulatory-focused application, and why creating robust monetary systems remains the most compelling use case in crypto.

Zaheer doesn't sugarcoat the reality for retail traders in this space, especially as the market becomes more professional and dominated by institutions. For those interested in the bigger picture, he outlines why Ethereum's so-called "identity crisis" isn’t as catastrophic as some might think and how human coordination could ultimately triumph over infighting and dogma.

This conversation is packed with insights into the current market cycle, the role of credit, and the importance of building a strategy based on conviction rather than hype. Enjoy!

Today, Hemi is attempting to unify Bitcoin and Ethereum. A Bitcoin L2 with customizations to more deeply integrate the top two blockchain ecosystems; Hemi is based on two core innovations: the hVM incorporates new byte codes into the EVM that talk directly to Bitcoin, and Proof of Proof (PoP) consensus which allows Hemi to achieve "superfinality" on Bitcoin.

The Bitcoin and Ethereum communities have long been at odds debating the true purpose of cryptocurrency, and best design principles to bring about mass adoption. Jeff calls Bitcoin the "root of the crypto tree" and Ethereum "the grand central station of crypto". With Hemi technology, its possible to unite the two blockchains and maybe the two communities once and for all.

  7. The Celestia Roadmap with Nick White

    Afspelen
1GB blocks are coming. Since November last year, 20 rollups have launched according to Celenium, the Celestia block explorer and those rollups have since published over 75GB of data. Lees meer

Following the Lemongrass upgrade, Celestia will aim to execute the roadmap across three different core tracks with the broader vision of enabling end-user verifiability to the fullest extent possible.

    1. Abundant Blockspace: Targeting 1GB blocks to scale for a wide range of rollups.

    2. Verifiable Blockspace: Ensures blockspace can be verified by any user, on any device.

    3. Frictionless Blockspace: Reduces friction for rollup developers and users.

Celestia being inherently modular means the chain isn’t limited by execution layer overhead or state bloat. This flexibility allows for high-throughput apps, speeding up existing crypto applications and enabling new possibilities, like fully onchain apps.

In today's special podcast, we’re diving into Celestia’s roadmap and what it means for the future of the modular ecosystem with Nick White.

Nick, the COO of Celestia, walks us through the next phase of their roadmap. One of the most significant shifts is the move from 2MB to 1GB blocks, entering the "fiber-optic" era of DA, where abundant block space could transform onchain possibilities.

...However, do we really need all this blockspace? Where are the novel apps? Will Celestia transition to validity proof sampling? How will Celestia make it easy for anyone to run a light node?

These questions and many more answered in today's pod as we break down the key takeaways from Nick’s insights and what they mean for the modular ecosystem.

  9. Can IBC Become The Interoperability Standard For L2s? With Polymer

    12 september 2024 · 25 min

    Afspelen
For our final chain abstraction focused podcast in NYC, we are talking about IBC. Lees meer

IBC is well known as the interoperability standard for the Cosmos ecosystem. Its by far the most lindy interoperability protocol, which explains Bo's "infatuation" with IBC as a whole.

Polymer has been working on interoperability since 2021, and their journey has evolved to bring them into the Ethereum rollup landscape.

Initially, Polymer explored Z solutions for verifying cross-chain transactions, but by early 2022, they narrowed focus towards L2 to L2 markets. This shift away from ZK wasn’t about abandoning the technology entirely—it was about focusing on what would solve real, immediate problems for app developers and protocols.

We had a really good chat with Bo about the vision, the path thus far, and where they are headed.

One of the key pain points Polymer is addressing is the long latency between L2s, particularly when waiting for Ethereum’s finality, which can take 12–16 minutes. This lag can be costly, both in time and in fees, as solvers charge users to take on the settlement risk.

With their testnet live since March 2024 and mainnet just around the corner, Polymer is positioned to bring IBC to Ethereum and the modular ecosystem sooner than later. Today’s episode will dive deep into how Polymer’s approach to cross-chain communication is evolving and what it means for the future of app-specific rollups in the crypto ecosystem.

  10. Why Solving Is The Biggest Onchain Opportunity In Crypto with Catalyst

    11 september 2024 · 34 min

    Afspelen
This was probably the most alpha packed episode of the entire NYC content series. Lees meer

Jim literally spilled a massive, yet completely unknown opportunity in the world of onchain finance right now.

Throughout this episode, we’re unpacking Catalyst’s take on how solvers have evolved, the critical role they play in onchain interoperability, and what it all means for builders, traders, and enthusiasts alike.

Jim kicked things off by sharing how he built his personal brand around adding real value to the conversation—whether through early analysis of DAOs, NFTs, or providing key insights into emerging projects. His approach to being authentic and data-driven is something that resonates well in a space where everyone is constantly looking for that next edge.

Then, we got into the nitty gritty of the opportunity at hand: Solving.

The onchain solving space is still dominated by a few big players, and Catalyst sees decentralizing the solver network as a crucial step forward. Lowering the barriers to entry and creating more opportunities for new solvers to jump in is where the market could see its next big wave of innovation.

For builders, the message is clear: there’s still plenty of room to get involved. Solvers are still early-stage, and with a bit of capital and a solid strategy, even small teams can find their niche. Catalyst also pointed out that much like the evolution of MEV searchers, solvers are likely to see a handful of dominant players, but there will also be space for specialists focusing on niche areas.

Ding ding ding. This is the key part, and you must rewatch this segment!

By the end of the conversation, one thing was obvious—solvers are quickly becoming a core component of the chain abstraction stack, and for anyone building in this space, paying attention to how these protocols and their solvers evolve could be key to unlocking new opportunities.

We really enjoyed this, hope you do too!

  12. How Monad is Breaking The Barriers Of Scaling Blockchains

Monad is one of the projects which teams look at now and wonder how they did such an impeccable job of growing their community, pre-product. Lees meer

The different community houses, the exclusivity of their discord, and the memetic energy is certainly something to study (along with the tech, of course).

So, that's exactly what we did with Keone Hon, CEO of Monad, in NYC a few weeks ago. We asked him how they developed a unique strategy that blends technical innovation with a community-first mindset, aiming to build a product which passes the test of time.

One key aspect of Monad’s approach (which we appreciate, as modular enthusiasts) is their focus on decentralization without relying on high-cost hardware. By prioritizing minimal hardware requirements, Monad allows anyone to run a node on a standard laptop, reducing operational barriers while maintaining high throughput.

This technical foundation is supported by the team’s dedication to building the entire stack from scratch, including a custom database optimized for parallel execution.

At the same time, Monad’s community-building efforts are equally impressive. Initiatives like their Run Club and language-learning project, MonLingo, bring together members from all over the world, helping to create a strong social layer around the project. The use of their mascot, Molandak , adds a playful touch that has helped Monad foster organic growth and genuine connections among its community members.

We had the chance to ask Keone some tech-heavy Qs as well, like if Monad will have rollups (we had to ask this one, cmon). It was fun to hear his answers and the vision for the future of scaling Monad.

    You'll enjoy this one.

However, one of the largest pushbacks we've received (and thought through) is around the interoperability issues of a world of thousands of rollups.

As part of our ongoing NYC chain abstraction focused content blitz, we were joined by Zon from Initia, to discuss how Initia blends the best parts of Ethereum’s rollup ecosystem with Cosmos’s flexibility.

We discussed the integration of certain elements like IBC, oracles, native chain abstraction with an Initia wallet, enshrined liquidity, and their VIP program which make the experience on the interwoven stack unique and differentiated.

We also asked Zon about the application space on Initia and learned about several of the native apps building on their stack. Towards the end, we discussed timelines to mainnet and the results from testnet as well.

The future of Ethereum is in our hands. Undeniably, the community has a major decisions to make which will shape the endgame of Ethereum. Today’s piece dives into the important discussion on synchronous composability and shared sequencing, a topic that sits at the heart of Ethereum's scaling journey. Lees meer

We caught up with Justin Drake, who shared his views on the current state of rollups, the challenges of decentralizing sequencers, and how Ethereum is positioning itself as the go-to layer for data availability. There's a growing shift in the revenue structure of rollups, with congestion fees overtaking MEV, making decentralized and shared sequencing more attractive for long-term scalability.

In this conversation, we explore how synchronous composability can dramatically improve both user and developer experiences across rollups. Justin also breaks down the benefits of shared deposits and real-time proving as key enablers for achieving true onchain network effects.

Justin also shared his vision of achieving 10M TPS across Ethereum and how we get there. We touched quite a bit on based rollups and some of the awesome teams building different stacks as well.

Let’s dive deeper into why shared sequencing may be the solution to Ethereum's fragmentation and how it can reshape the future of L2s and L1 scaling.

  15. Why No One Wants To Be A Shared Sequencer Anymore

    6 september 2024 · 41 min

A few weeks back, Andy put out a tweet saying "no one wants to be branded as a shared sequencer anymore" and it triggered quite a few people. Lees meer

The "loss of revenue" is the biggest, ongoing misconception of why shared sequencing isn't the best option for rollups.

Today were tackling that notion head on with Noah Pravecek from NodeKit and their shift from shared sequencing to building a Superbuilder.

Initially, NodeKit aimed to build a shared sequencer, similar to what other projects like Espresso and Astria have worked on. Shared sequencers can coordinate block building and bring composability across chains, but NodeKit quickly recognized the limitations. While these solutions offer atomic inclusion (ensuring transactions are seen by all rollups), they don’t guarantee that the transactions will actually be executed according to the rollups’ state transitions.

That gap—between inclusion and execution—is what their new design in the Superbuilder addresses head on.

However, isn't it a winner takes all market?

Why did Noah decide to build in this market?

Where is the blue ocean to create meaningful PMF in a crowded space?

The market for shared sequencing is highly competitive, but Noah answered and defended the technical differences quite well. We also discussed the obstacles of raising as a college dropout and first time founder, as well as what it's like building a brand in the space.

And, of course, we touched on Noah's views of chain abstraction and how Nodekit fits into the picture.

If you've been paying attention to our content focused around interoperability, this one's for you. A big problem space to be solved and were confident in the teams shipping. Enjoy.

  16. Is AggLayer The Solution To The Modular Fragmentation Problem?

    5 september 2024 · 38 min

In today’s piece, we’re taking a close look at one of the latest innovations in the modular ecosystem: AggLayer, the new interoperability layer stemming from the Polygon team. As Ethereum scaling solutions continue to evolve, AggLayer offers a new approach to making cross-chain interactions smoother, more secure, and more scalable. Lees meer

But, is this the solution we are looking for?

    Is AggLayer competitive with Superchain?

How will the modular community align on a single solution to unify the ecosystem?

We sat down with David Silverman, VP of Product at Polygon, who shared some fascinating insights during his interview on The Rollup podcast. He traced Polygon’s journey from its early PoS chain, through the launch of zkEVM, to its current focus on building AggLayer—a shared bridge model that emphasizes scaling and native interoperability.

One of the core ideas that David mentioned about AggLayer is its ability to support multiple rollup stacks and consensus mechanisms while maintaining security through its "pessimistic proof" model. David pointed out how, in comparison to models like OP Stack's Superchain, AggLayer is designed to work seamlessly across various ecosystems without locking developers into a single protocol.

It got spicy...and we pushed back on the security model.

However, David reaffirmed that security is a major focus. While AggLayer can ensure chains don’t rug one another, users are still responsible for ensuring the security of the individual chains they interact with. This clear boundary of security guarantees sets AggLayer apart, offering builders confidence while still keeping flexibility.

Finally, we asked the pressing question of "When mainnet?" and luckily got some alpha from David on the upcoming roadmap for AggLayer.

Another great episode from NYC during our chain abstraction focused marathon. Enjoy.

One of the core ideas that we shared in this podcast and throughout the NYC sessions was creating more optimizations for Ethereum L2s which currently don't exist today. It feels like we've settled in to the current standards of 2 second block times and a standard of TPS which has been normal. Lees meer

MegaETH is trying to flip this model on its head. Centralized block production via a beefy sequencer, and decentralized block validation via inheriting Ethereum's security.

For those who’ve been in the DeFi for a while, it’s clear that performance and scalability have always been key challenges (remember DeFi Summer?). MegaETH steps into this conversation with a fresh perspective, focusing on maximizing Ethereum's potential rather than breaking away into becoming an L1.

"Make Ethereum Great Again" = MEGA.

We sat down with Namik, one of MegaETH’s co-founders, to get a better understanding of their architecture and strategy. From leveraging Ethereum’s security to scaling performance with 100,000 TPS and 1ms block times, they’re pushing boundaries without sacrificing decentralization...or are they?

What are the key tradeoffs with their design?

Is MegaETH thinking about becoming an L1?

Why has their barbell brand strategy been so successful thus far?

Testnet is coming very soon, and Namik was kind enough to share some alpha with us in this stream. MegaETH has stayed true to the ethos of building with Ethereum while aiming to bring in new users and use cases.

  19. Are Based Rollups The Solution To Ethereum's Long-Term Value Capture?

Based rollups are a really interesting design because they offer MEV to the L1 (which acts as the sequencer) rather than accruing the value to the rollup operator. This has been the biggest argument for L2s being parasitic to the L1. Lees meer

We think based rollups change that for the better. The core issue still remains, however: Current rollups likely will not opt-in to based designs because they will lose their sequencer revenue and entire business model would have to undergo a dramatic shift.

Today, we’re diving into the world of Gwyneth, a rollup solution aimed at solving some of the most pressing issues in DeFi—fragmented liquidity, scalability, and user experience. Designed with synchronous composability at its core (being based), Gwyneth brings a new level of efficiency to L2s making it feel like a single chain even as multiple chains work together under the hood.

We’ll also take a closer look at the technical improvements that Gwyneth brings to the table, including real-time proving, modular sequencing, and a unique approach to block building. The Booster Rollup functionality further enhances this by allowing new rollups to inherit state from L1, preventing the need to recreate entire ecosystems from scratch.

  21. Where Is The Demand for Data Availability? With EigenDA

Today, we’re diving into a topic that's crucial for the future of Ethereum and the broader modular ecosystem: Data Availability. Lees meer

Recently, there's been chatter on X about DA being commoditized to zero and the only value accrual in the modular stack being in execution. Is this true? Where is the current demand for DA? Are modular DA providers competing with Ethereum?

In our latest conversation with Teddy from EigenDA, we explored the nuances of scaling Ethereum and why the demand for block space could be the make-or-break factor in its evolution.

EigenDA’s modular approach to DA is not just about scaling—it’s about making Ethereum more efficient as it transitions towards its singular role as settlement layer. While the much-anticipated 4844 upgrade has changed the landscape for data availability, there has been a lag in demand for DA providers.

On the practical side, EigenDA is working closely with high-throughput rollups like MegaETH, Movement Labs, LayerN, and Celo to create the necessary demand for DA. By targeting specific use cases and partnering with these projects, EigenDA aims to drive blockspace demand, making its modular approach to DA not just innovative, but essential.

These high TPS L2s should drive a ton of data posting onto EigenDA's AVS, which is the largest currently.

With regards to chain abstraction -- the key focus for this series -- we discuss how there's potential for a future where gas costs are abstracted away, allowing developers to sponsor them, leading to onchain interactions as seamless as browsing the web.

  23. Why SolverFi Is The Next Big Trend In Crypto

We've been studying the chain abstraction stack pretty heavily recently. Lees meer

Over the last few months, we've developed a thesis that our optimal outcome in the more immediate future is to have a frontend UX powered by a wallet abstraction provider which allows for all your crypto balances across all chains to be aggregated in one place. Then, when you interact across various different dApps in the crypto space, the cross-chain bridging and settlement takes place via intent-based interoperability providers (aka solvers).

At its core, the intent-centric approach shifts the focus from specific chains to desired outcomes, enabling users to specify what they want, while solvers—a network of offchain agents—work behind the scenes to make it happen across multiple blockchains.

In our discussion today with Kevin Wang from Khalani, we delve into how this model enhances user experience by removing the complexities of gas fees, bridging, and the need for users to interact directly with specific chains.

We discuss the process to democratize solver networks breaking down the solving process into specialized tasks, allowing smaller solvers to collaborate, which in turn creates a more scalable and efficient architecture.

We’ll also look at how Khalani’s infrastructure supports low-latency execution and onchain coordination. We pushed back on the possibilities of "dethroning" the Wintermute's of the world (those who dominate the solving game currently) and Kevin responded quite thoroughly with a plan to do so.

This piece is packed with insights into how intents can optimize both application performance and user interaction in a rapidly evolving onchain world.

The key to thriving in this environment isn’t about trying to predict the next big move but about understanding how to manage risk, maintain discipline, and stay informed...which is easier said than done.

None of this content is to be perceived as financial advice, but we did talk more about markets than we usually do.

In our conversation, we explore the transition from BitMEX’s meteoric rise to its current focus, as competition from new market entrants like Binance and FTX reshaped the landscape. Akshat reminisces about the unique, egalitarian culture at BitMEX, where humility and inclusivity were the foundations of success.

We'll also talk about philosophy and strategy of Maelstorm. Akshat explains how they’re building a 100-year portfolio, targeting early-stage crypto projects that align with their pillars of entropy, trustless decentralization, and new models for internet monetization.

The time horizon on these investments was really interesting and shifted our perspective away from typical 3-5 year cyclical journey.

Today, Gravity, the new chain launched by Galxe, is ready to take this challenge on as well.

By integrating over 35 different chains, Galxe has long been a key player in the ecosystem, but with Gravity, they are launching their modular appchain. This new Layer 2 solution, which aims to eventually evolve into a Layer 1, is built on the Arbitrum Nitro stack, and Eigenlayer restaked ETH for economic security.

One of the most compelling aspects of Gravity is its focus on chain abstraction. The goal here is to create a seamless environment where users submit intents through an AI agent and don’t worry about which chain they’re on or the technicalities of cross-chain transactions. Gravity’s tech stack, which includes the Rust-based ETH EVM (RETH) for fast finality and high throughput means users experience real time fulfillment of intents.

This is an interesting time for the rollup ecosystem. Galxe is one of the biggest brand names launching their own chain, which further validates the appchain thesis.

  30. WTF is MEV? Pre-Confs & MEV Commit Explained

MEV is how some VCs value Layer 1 blockchains, its how "sandwich attacks" happen onchain, and its sometimes toxic. Lees meer

Although, we've found that "toxic flow" is really just profitable user trading onchain...that's a conversation for another day though.

MEV has evolved from its early days as "Miner Extractable Value," a term that felt relevant in a proof-of-work world, to "Maximal Extractable Value," a crucial component embedded within Ethereum’s economic fabric. As block production on Ethereum became centralized—a trade-off to support a decentralized validator set—the discussion has shifted towards ensuring that this centralization doesn’t compromise the core decentralized ethos.

This is where things get a bit spicy.

In today's pod with Murat from Primev, we discuss the ability for users to receive pre-confs for their transactions, ensuring not just their inclusion in a block but also their execution (this is the big discrepancy).

We first met Murat at Modular Summit with Tarun Chitra, where we learned about MEV commit on an iPad whiteboard diagram.

We’re also seeing a broader discussion unfold around the idea of multiple concurrent proposers, a proposal that could further decentralize block proposal power and potentially reduce censorship. Primev’s MEV Commit fits neatly into this narrative by building on top of existing infrastructure like MEV Boost, without requiring drastic changes, and offering additional layers of security and efficiency.

Testnet results are already showing promise, with MEV Commit adding up to 10% more value to blocks, which translates to higher rewards for validators and, ultimately, a more secure network. MEV Commit is reshaping how we think about gas markets, private order flow, and the overall efficiency of the Ethereum network.

  31. How To Connect Ethereum's Rollup Clusters

    16 augustus 2024 · 50 min

Following yesterday's podcast detailing the "Why" we should care about building a connected future for Ethereum, we decided to follow it up with a detailed, technical video on the "How" it will be accomplished. Lees meer

Rollup clusters offer a promising way forward, and in this piece, we’re breaking down exactly how they work and which interoperability solutions are best suited for different jobs. One of our favorite sayings from the modular ecosystem is to "pick the best tool for the job" and we believe this extends to interoperability solutions as well.

You can think of rollup clusters as the blockchain equivalent of virtual local area networks (LANs). Within these clusters, multiple rollups are densely connected, creating an environment where transactions can be executed quickly and efficiently. This is akin to how devices within a LAN communicate seamlessly with each other, enhancing the overall user experience within the cluster.

One of the key distinctions to understand is the difference between intra-cluster and inter-cluster communication. Intra-cluster communication focuses on maximizing speed and atomic composability, ensuring that transactions are synchronized within the same block across all rollups in the cluster. This is particularly important for high-frequency trading and algorithmic applications, where even the slightest delay can have significant consequences.

(Think about AI agents transacting in the future).

On the other hand, inter-cluster communication prioritizes security and validity, accepting a bit more latency to provide stronger guarantees—similar to the evolution of long-distance communication on the internet.

However, it’s not just about speed and composability. The current development of rollup clusters is also a balancing act between engineering feats and economic incentives. For these clusters to thrive, it’s not enough to just build technically impressive solutions; they also need to be economically viable for the rollups involved. Th…

No walled gardens. No closed systems. No incentive misalignment. That has changed, and its time to talk about how we can adjust our course as a community.

Ethereum’s shift towards a rollup-centric roadmap has been imperative for scaling. It’s led to the emergence of rollup clusters like Optimism’s Superchain and Arbitrum Orbit, each creating their own ecosystems within the larger Ethereum network. While this has been a necessary step for handling more transactions and reducing costs, it’s also introduced a new layer of complexity—fragmentation.

In the early days of Ethereum, composability—the ability for different DeFi applications to seamlessly interact with each other on L1 during DeFi Summer—was one of the platform’s strongest features (and still is, on the baselayer). The concept of “money legos” allowed developers and users to stack and integrate various protocols effortlessly. However, with the rise of rollup clusters and L2s in general, this once smooth experience has become more difficult to navigate for users.

This fragmentation poses a significant challenge to the Ethereum community, especially as other blockchains like Solana offer more unified environments. Solana’s approach, which prioritizes a single, contiguous ecosystem, has put pressure on Ethereum to address these composability issues. The competition is heating up, and it's clear that for Ethereum to remain at the forefront, it needs to regain that seamless user experience.

So, we invited Jill Gunter from Espresso Systems on the pod after seeing a ton of her written content around making Ethereum composable again.

We discussed the why behind Ethereum scaling, more than the how, which was a refreshing feel out of the weeds.

Just a few days after we dropped the chain abstraction market map, we come to you with an in-depth podcast about NEAR's chain signatures, which they recently announced as well. Lees meer

As the crypto space continues to grow, so does the need for better ways to connect different blockchains.

Proximity, a project born from the NEAR ecosystem, has been working on a solution that could help simplify these connections. Their latest development, Chain Signatures, offers a way for smart contracts to sign transactions across various blockchains, making it easier to build and interact with apps that aren't limited to just one chain.

We were first introduced to this idea from Illia himself during Modular March, when we discussed the idea of account aggregation and chain abstraction.

However, what we learned on this podcast is the importance of atomicity. This is a technical term that means actions across different blockchains are either fully completed or not done at all, ensuring consistency and reducing the risk of errors (a chain re-org being the most catastrophic of problems when dealing with synchronizing state across different domains).

We touched on the security parameters of chain signatures as well. Proximity uses a decentralized Multi-Party Computation (MPC) network, where multiple independent operators hold pieces of a master key. This is a typical design we've see outside of the onchain landscape which adds a layer of protection and privacy when it comes to data.

Chain Signatures could offer new ways to build flexible, multi-chain applications without the usual headaches that come with cross-chain development. Still in the early stages, but NEAR has been a pioneer of chain abstraction for some time now.

Today, we'll take a closer look at how Chain Signatures function, why atomicity is so important, and how Proximity is paving the way for a more connected and user-friendly crypto environment.

Welcome back to another technical deep dive, this time about ephemeral rollups. Lees meer

This idea was originally presented to us a few months back with an idea of "building a chain, launching it, then shutting it down when you're done with it", which was pretty interesting. These 'ephemeral rollups' are designed to be temporary, existing just long enough to handle specific tasks before they are shut down.

In this episode, we're spotlighting how MagicBlock is harnessing ephemeral rollups to push the boundaries of Solana throughput. Yes, Solana is going modular and rollups which settle to Solana are coming.

We discuss how Solana’s architecture, particularly its separation of state and logic, and its parallelization capabilities allow for ephemeral rollups.

Ephemeral rollups also hold potential for broader DeFi applications, like serving as a form of insurance for cross-chain transactions. By locking state on a base layer like Solana, then processing it through the rollup, developers can ensure faster transaction times, reduced fees, and greater security—perfect for projects that need to scale dynamically or require specialized runtimes.

This concept also can scale into the Ethereum ecosystem, but albeit slightly more difficult because of the slower L1 block times.

We really enjoyed this in-depth dive into the concepts of temporary rollups, Solana L1 dynamics, and the usecases of these types of chains.

  36. How To Unify The Ethereum Community

Ethereum is as divided and fragmented as it has ever been. Between rollups, MEV debates, and the lack of performance at the base layer, we are seeing a lot of discourse around abrupt changes. Lees meer

However, is this really something the community can't rally around and form a solution?

    We think it is.

So, in today's pod we dive into an often-overlooked aspect of Ethereum—its marketing and community building from the top down.

We were joined by Emmanuel Awosika to discuss how Ethereum's decentralized nature has led to fragmented messaging, making it difficult to resonate with diverse groups within the ecosystem. We’ll explore why the narrative around “ultrasound money” might not be doing Ethereum any favors and why some believe the network needs to embrace a broader, more inclusive message.

We also touched on how Vitalik has identified three distinct subcultures within Ethereum—Cypherpunks, Degen Traders, and Regens—each with unique incentives, complicating the unification under a single narrative.

In this light, we discussed the debate over whether Ethereum should make changes to its base layer, which Emmanuel advocated for thoughtful upgrades to maintain competitiveness. The other key concept we address is whether or not all onchain activity be pushed onto rollups, or if Ethereum mainnet should still play a vital role for certain applications?

Finally, we addressed the issue of Ethereum’s elitist perception as a result of MEV

Today’s discussion offers a thought-provoking look at where Ethereum is headed and what needs to be done to keep it cool, relevant, and inclusive. Enjoy.

Starknet is coming to Bitcoin with one of the biggest breakthroughs in Bitcoin scaling: STARK verifiers natively on Bitcoin. Lees meer

In a recent conversation with Eli Ben-Sasson from StarkWare, we got a closer look at how they’re working to bring STARK verifiers to Bitcoin, something that hasn’t been possible until now. Our discussion was centered around giving the Bitcoin network new capabilities, thanks to the potential reintroduction of OP__CAT, a simple but powerful opcode that will enable advanced computational functions on Bitcoin.

Eli talked us through their exploration of integrating Bitcoin with Ethereum, envisioning a future where Starknet can settle transactions across both chains simultaneously. This could open up a new world of possibilities, allowing users to leverage the strengths of both ecosystems while choosing their preferred data availability layer on a transaction basis.

Eli also touched on some of the broader implications of these developments. From the shifting political landscape around Bitcoin, with discussions about OP__CAT gaining traction, to the challenges of maintaining security and decentralization as the network grows more complex.

We asked Eli about his broader vision of immutability at the base layer of Bitcoin and Ethereum vs. improving better technology. He talked deeply about the challenges ahead, from governance issues to the risk of centralization, as well as his and the entire Starknet community's commitment to building a more open and decentralized future.

Eli emphasized that this is a journey that will take years, if not decades, to fully realize.

This has been one of, if not the biggest breakthroughs in the ongoing Bitcoin scaling space race. We really enjoyed this conversation as it started off quite technical and ended up philosophical.

"Prediction markets are part of phase two of crypto product adoption" - Andrew Young, in today's podcast. Lees meer

If you’ve been following the evolution of DeFi, you know that prediction markets were one of the earliest use cases envisioned for blockchain. But only now, with more robust infrastructure and a larger pool of onchain users, are we beginning to see the full potential of this usecase unfold.

Today, we discussed the idea of sports betting as a much larger and more sustainable market compared to other prediction markets, like political betting. The regularity of betting events is a key part of prediction market success.

We also discussed the liquidity problem for prediction markets, especially for long-tail sports events and more niche markets. SX has tackled this head-on by building an Arbitrum Orbit appchain which has over 50 market makers, ensuring that there’s always someone on the other side of the bet.

One of the more interesting parts of the discussion was the self-fulfilling prophecy of prediction markets and the danger of them, in a dystopian way.

Kept it light, not-so-technical and focused on the usecase of blockchains. Where are the apps? Prediction markets are here.

  41. One Rollup or A Million Rollups?

There's been an ongoing debate about whether or not we need more L2s. Without getting into too much of where *we* stand, the idea of new, EVM general purpose L2s is certainly in oversupply. Lees meer

But, what about altVM L2s? Like Eclipse and their SVM design?

Originally, Eclipse was a strong proponent of modular scaling, advocating for multiple rollups to expand the ecosystem horizontally. But as their research deepened, they’ve seemingly changed messaging towards a different approach—one that focuses on a single, highly performant rollup that settles to Ethereum.

This isn’t just a technical shift; it’s a response to the economic realities and incentive structures that come with managing execution and consensus in a rollup-centric world.

The "one big rollup" idea? Max out the sequencer, decentralize block validation, incentivize the app builders to stay on your chain, and let the flywheel rip.

But, is this the ideal path to scaling rollup infra? Or is the appchain model a better model?

In today’s piece, we’ll explore the challenges and opportunities that come with shared sequencing—a concept that’s been gaining traction as a way to improve interoperability between different rollups. While shared sequencing could, in theory, create a more seamless onchain experience, Terry from Eclipse raises important questions about its economic viability. Specifically, they’re concerned about how MEV and execution fees are distributed across multiple domains, potentially reducing the value for individual app chains.

Also, are the incentive structures completely misaligned for rollups to collaborate with a shared sequencer?

We’ll also touch on the concept of sovereign sequencing, where applications take control of their own transaction orderings, a trend that’s gaining momentum as projects seek to capture more value and reduce reliance on general-purpose L2s. Finally, we’ll discuss the broader implications of interoperability, which Terry argues is as much a social and economic ch…

Does that sound funny? Well, we came up with this analogy minutes before the show and are starting to lean into it.

Vending machines allow you to pick any snack to cure your hunger. RaaS providers similarly allow you to pick from a variety of modular infra to build a new chain. Developers can access everything needed to build and scale their blockchains—from rollup frameworks like OP, Arbitrum, and ZK Sync to data availability layers such as Celestia and EigenDA.

We ended up talking about the core issue Caldera is trying to solve with their recent metalayer developments, which is fragmentation. The technical complexity involved in connecting separate modules can be difficult, let alone connecting chains itself in a friendly way for users. We asked Matt how he plans to handle this...

He mentioned by focusing on asynchronous composability over the more challenging synchronous composability is his ideal outcome, for now. We discussed what it actually looks like to provide RaaS services for projects, who their customers are, their marketing strategy, and the technicals behind their metalayer.

We also asked if RaaS is going to zero via commoditization and if RaaS is really needed in a world of abundant shared sequencers (which can fulfill a similar role to a RaaS, in a sense). Matt had good answers.

We really enjoyed this episode and hope you do as well.

We've heard all the complaints at ETHCC about no applications and "all infra" in crypto. Where are the apps? Lees meer

To us, this is a bit silly seeing as we have a fully fledged onchain DeFi and NFT ecosystems as well as DAOs operating. The apps are here. The usecase is money.

But, whats somewhat problematic to us is the lack of innovation on the DeFi rails since 2021-2022.

So, we sat down with Bob Baxley to discuss this and more. Bob takes us through the latest in Maverick V2, introducing us to programmable pools that allow for complex interactions and reduced gas fees, making operations more efficient and cost-effective compared to Uniswap V3 swaps. This flexibility extends to directional fees, enabling different fees for each direction of a swap, which is especially useful for liquidity providers (LPs) with specific strategies like dollar-cost averaging.

We also discuss zero knowledge machine learning (ZKML), which is a tech that allows for heavy computation to be performed offchain in a trustless manner, which can then be integrated into DeFi applications. This means more sophisticated models can be used for setting AMM fees or lending rates, all verified by ZK proofs to ensure correctness and security.

The interview also touches on AI and Web3 integration, highlighting how offchain AI models can provide more nuanced outputs for DeFi applications. We delve into the multi chain strategy pioneered by Sushiswap, where Bob explains Maverick’s goal to deploy everywhere, ensuring they can interact with other protocols and remain relevant across various chains.

This contrasts with the appchain approach (modular thesis), which Bob views skeptically due to challenges in liquidity and composability.

We thought that part was particularly interesting.

From restaking and Eigenlayer to programmable pools and AI integration, there is a lot jam packed in this episode. Enjoy!

We've been of the opinion that the Cosmos Hub and Ethereum rollup-centric roadmap are converging. Both of the scaling methodologies are somewhat opposites (appchains at first vs. baselayer L1 then building vertically), however they seem to be converging. Lees meer

The convergence of roadmaps is particularly interesting because of the challenges faced by Cosmos Zones and the need for upgrades via forking the chain.

In today's episode, Andy hosted Ganesh Swamy, founder of Covalent, to discuss this convergence and more. We talked about scaling data availability in rollups with Celestia and blobs, preserving and accessing transaction data with the Ethereum wayback machine and competition between data availability solutions and Ethereum itself.

Covalent emerged from a simple idea of 'pulling Ethereum transactions into Excel'. The core idea of creating a persistent, perpetual storage machine for blockchains is a result of Ganesh's extensive database engineering experience. We also discussed how this works under the hood, and why having a long-term data storage solution for blockchains is crucial.

Towards the end we went on to discuss the troubles of the token economy that we are currently in. Negative sentiment, early stage investing, high FDV low float, and some of the potential solutions that we see out there.
