  1. The Cross-Chain Intents Landscape with Catalyst

    4 juli 2024 · 44 min

A problem we've been fiddling with in the interoperability landscape is this idea behind achieving maximum extensibility with regards to the creation of hundreds of new chains. Lees meer

We know that if there's going to be an overwhelming amount of chains, we need solutions that are permissionless and easy to spin up on new chains.

For today's podcast, we sat down with Catalyst CTO Alexander, to discuss this situation and more. We talked about the concept of the unit of liquidity, which enables asynchronous asset swaps between different pools on different chains. We went on to discuss the best way to tackle the N-squared problem in which traditional cross-chain solutions require each chain to know the state of every other chain.

We went on to talk about the idea of logic-dependent swaps, which allow for condition-based transactions. These swaps can be set to execute only if specific conditions are met, opening up novel use cases for onchain users.

Catalyst is already live on the mainnet with three OP stack chains: Blast, OP, and Base, with plans to extend to more ecosystems over time.

As the cross-chain landscape continues to evolve, with more app-specific chains emerging, Catalyst is aiming to solve this extensibility dilemma to address the challenges of scaling horizontally, in an interoperable way.

There's quite a bit of conversation ongoing in the zeitgest of the modular research community. We tend to lean into technical topics more than the flavor of the day, but for this episode we managed to do both. Lees meer

We were joined by Alejo Pinto, one of the founders of Lumio, to discuss their modular VM abstraction framework, enabling developers to build and deploy apps everywhere, as well as the state of sequencing and composability in the space.

Lumio supports popular VMs like SVM, Move VM, and Parallel EVM, enabling applications to be deployed across various execution environments. This framework is designed to simplify life for devs by maintaining full compatibility with these VMs without requiring any code changes, thus promoting a "build-once-deploy-anywhere" philosophy.

This is pretty aligned with the modular thesis of build whatever, as well as a core pillar, optionality.

During our conversation with Alejo, we also touched on the hot topic of composability. Alejo shared his views on the debate between synchronous atomic composability and asynchronous environments, highlighting the tradeoffs between having a single global state machine like Solana versus a modularized scaling system.

One significant aspect of Lumio's work is its approach to shared and decentralized sequencers. Alejo emphasized the role of shared sequencing in optimizing crosschain messaging and contract calls, and highlighted the ongoing research and development in this area with projects like Espresso.

Join us as we explore how Lumio fits in the modular thesis with their modular VM abstraction framework.

The C.A.K.E framework established that chain abstraction is a collaborative effort, and not a one winner takes all situation. Lees meer

This idea for how the intents and chain abstraction stack works was originally created by Frontier Research and now there is a C.A.K.E working group. Since then, they have also spun off a new project called OneBalance focusing on credible accounts and achieving the chain abstraction experience.

We were joined by Stephane, an ex-Flashbots team, and now leading the OneBalance team. We talked about their focus on developing a chain abstracted stack via credible accounts and resource locks. These innovations prevent double-spending and make secure cross-chain messaging possible without the need to lock assets on the source chain.

Collaboration is at the heart of OneBalance's mission, along with other chain abstraction contributors. Rather than replacing existing wallet infrastructure like MetaMask or Rabby, OneBalance aims to integrate its credible account capabilities into them to make the transition for users easier.

We asked how Stephane sees OneBalance getting traction and what the process would be like for active users to switch to their solution.

We also discussed the role that solver networks play in the chain abstraction ecosystem, executing transactions on behalf of users and ensuring fast fills. We discussed the permissionless access, speed, and price optimization properties of solver networks, which allows them to tackle the "order flow trilemma".

We also talked about MEV and local consensus towards the end, and uncovered a bold thesis from Stephane...His vision? Every validator and user account to operate as its own rollup.

Watch or listen to todays episode to learn about the CAKE framework and credible accounts as a means to achieving the chain abstracted future.

The acceleration of ZK is happening at a rapid pace. Last week we covered the collaboration between Succinct and AggLayer on the proof generation side using SP1, a generalized ZKVM. Today, we're excited to share insights from our recent chat with RJ and Mauro from Aligned Layer, the other half to the ZK puzzle focused on verifying proofs. Lees meer

RJ and Mauro have deep roots in engineering and cryptography, originally honed at Lambda Class.

Aligned is on a mission to accelerate the Ethereum roadmap. By making ZK proofs more accessible and affordable for developers, they are building out the first verification layer.

We had a lot of questions for these guys.

One of them was around Aligned’s approach to verifcation with a stateless architecture, meaning they aren't building their own but instead focus solely on proof verification. We asked about centralization concerns and also managing their consensus as a network. They are doing this as an Eigenlayer AVS, utilizing the economic security of Ethereum.

We also asked them straight up how many proofs per second they can verify currently and why their "complete verification" system is superior to others. We discussed why proof aggregation is so important to their setup as well.

Towards the end, we discussed the ways Aligned is aiming to reduce the cost of reading proofs on Ethereum as well as developing more efficient aggregation methods. They are committed to integrating with the broader Ethereum ecosystem, working with LRT providers and other partners to enhance economic security and network adoption.

    We're about to find out.

In today's podcast, we were joined by Taiko's founder Daniel Wang, to discuss their "permissionless based rollup" which allows unrestricted block proposals and proofs.

One of the challenges Taiko faces is the higher cost associated with base rollups compared to centralized sequencers due to the onchain protocol rules. Daniel explained that profitability is achievable as their transaction volumes grow. Currently, transaction fees on Taiko are minimal.

We discussed the gradual decentralization of Taiko’s long-term vision. They aim to give up most of their control from a block proposing POV within a year, aligning with Ethereum’s core ethos and principles. In addition, we discussed the move Taiko is exploring with plans to launch their Base Boosted Rollup (BBR) and integrate ZK proofs by Q3.

If you've been following the latest developments in ZK (but not trademarked), you'll know that it is the closest thing to the endgame of crypto. However, you'll also know the progress has been somewhat slow as its not a trivial task to build zk circuits and logic.

Enter: Succinct & generalizable ZKVMs. SP1 is the rust-based zkVM built Succinct allowing developers to write standard Rust code and leverage ZK technology seamlessly. Uma and co have been making insane strides in reducing the costs of generating zk proofs while other teams are meticulously working on proof verification improvements.

We had the pleasure of exploring the collaboration between AggLayer and Succinct, which is using SP1 to bring practical zk to production. AggLayer is specifically designed to tackle Ethereum's fragmentation problem by enabling asset fungibility and low-latency interoperability across different L2 chains. The big innovation here is Plonky 3 as well as the idea behind Pessismistic proofs.

Throughout this conversation, we explore how SP1 integrates with AggLayer, enhancing developer velocity and enabling seamless communication between different L2 chains, pessimistic proofs, the rise of rust-based ZKVMs, ZK for interoperability, and expanding the application space built atop of ZK.

Join us for a technical conversation about a great collaborative effort to scale ZK and thus, the entire crypto space.

Everclear, formerly known as Connext, recently launched with a fresh focus as the Clearing Layer aiming to solve the ever-present modular fragmentation problem. Lees meer

Today we talked with Arjun Bhuptani, about their history coining the term "chain abstraction", building an intents-based bridge, and now working to collaborate with the intents and solver community. With Everclear, they are focusing on the clearing layer and chain abstraction stack.

We discussed the critical challenges of liquidity management for intent protocols and solvers and how to solve these by enabling solvers to net out their flows between chains, reducing the need for frequent rebalancing and lower interoperability costs. This approach not only makes it easier for solvers to operate across multiple chains but also addresses the centralization risks present in the solver landscape.

This centralization and single-solver dominance is something we've been thinking about at The Rollup so it was nice to hear Arjun's POV on handling this situation.

Overall, we've seen the market for intent-based protocols and solvers expand dramatically, and Everclear's clearing layer is designed to thrive in this landscape. But, can they do what they set out to and get the "buy-in" from the right players? We asked Arjun and he answered this, and the centralization question with ease.

The other big issue we brought up is the extensibility problem faced by many interoperability protocols, where they cannot scale to 'infinite' separate environments because of their infra constraints...we also asked Arjun how Everclear is able to scale as the number of chains grows. Lots of good tidbits.

Currently, the project is live on testnet, with plans to finalize their dutch auction system for pricing and netting. The team is targeting a full launch in Q3, incorporating ongoing developments and feedback.

In the recent zeitgest of crypto builders has been the idea of achieving sovereignty while also keeping interoperability. Today, we’re diving into this with Avi Zurlo, Chief Product Officer of =nil; Foundation. For this conversation, we had a focus on sharding and how =nil; Foundation is approaching this choice.

Since its inception, =nil; Foundation has been a key player in low-level cryptographic infrastructure, focusing heavily on ZK technology. With innovative products like ZK LLVM and a ZK proof marketplace, =nil; is all in on building a scalable ZK rollup, based on zkSharding.

In this pod, we explore the important distinctions between sharding and rollup-centric scaling. We also discuss horizontal scaling, distributing workloads across multiple machines, and scaling without sacrificing decentralization (and of course, interoperability).

We also look ahead to the roadmap which promises significant scalability, and a long-term oriented approach with the goal to be resilient for decades to come.

We think chain abstraction solves a lot, if not _all_ of this subpar user experience. Chain abstraction is all about making the user experience seamless.

    It is an experience itself.

In today’s podcast with Ethan, devrel at Particle Network, we explored the definition of chain abstraction, where Particle fits, as well as the three core components of chain abstraction: blockchain-level, account-level, and application-level solutions.

Blockchain-level abstraction involves infrastructure solutions like AggLayer and Superchain, which provide shared security and unified bridging. Account-level abstraction, where Particle plays a major role, focuses on creating universal accounts that unify account states and balances across chains, giving users one address and one balance usable on any chain. Application-level abstraction allows developers to create chain-agnostic applications, orchestrating cross-chain workflows seamlessly (think Agoric, Socket, and others).

We discussed the idea behind universal accounts, which leverage account abstraction to provide a unified balance and address across all chains.

Finally, we discussed the Particle Network which is a Cosmos SDK based L1 which aims to maintain state parity across chains, ensuring secure and efficient transaction execution. We discussed their native token and the role it will play in this ecosystem.

We are pretty bullish on future of chain abstraction as we believe it’s the next logical step in modularity, and crypto as a whole.

We took a deep dive into the world of Taproot Wizards and the intriguing OP-CAT mechanism, designed to enhance Bitcoin’s functionality.

Taproot Wizards is a community dedicated to "making Bitcoin magical again".

They are deeply rooted in Bitcoin culture and technology, aiming to push the boundaries of Bitcoin while not letting the ossification of Bitcoin happen. Basically, they are trying to avoid the "pet rock" do something meme.

Their biggest contribution to the space is CatVM. We took a journey through a children’s book that cleverly explains Bitcoin’s scaling journey through lightning, BitVM, and eventually CatVM.

Central to CatVM is OP-CAT, a simple yet powerful opcode which is just 8 lines of code, yet makes a massive change in the functionality of Bitcoin. Originally part of Bitcoin but disabled in 2010 by Satoshi (along with other opcodes), OP-CAT allows for covenants and finite state machines, unlocking new possibilities for Bitcoin transactions.

In this discussion, we’ll delve into the vision of Tyler and the broader Taproot Wizard community.

Today's video, we did just that with Jagdeep Sindhu. Jag is a seasoned Bitcoin OG and has a strong opinion about the acceptable trust assumptions in Bitcoin scaling designs.

Jag's vision is to transform Bitcoin into a 'super chain' where utility and security are both achievable without unnecessary tradeoffs. Rollux uses merge mining to borrow Bitcoin's security, while introducing chain locks every fifth block to enforce finality and prevent long-range attacks on the sidechain.

They also have their own zk based DA solution which powers their chain. By combining elements of PoW and PoS for enhanced security, Rollux is trying to build secure interoperability solution. We discussed the future outlook for Rollux being a secure transfer hub for Bitcoin and other chains like Ethereum and Avalanche as well.

We enjoyed the depth of the technical architecture on this conversation and Jag answered all of our questions regarding Bitcoin security and more.

In today's presentation, we take a closer look at the evolution from the "castle and moat" model to zero trust. We discussed how traditional internet companies initially used the castle and moat model, but shifted towards zero trust due to its enhanced security.

We went on to discuss how dWallet Network is reintroducing zero trust in cross-chain environments using cryptographic techniques like a new MPC protocol, 2PC MPC. 2PC MPC ensures transactions require user participation, maintaining zero trust even if validators collude.

This approach is crucial for maintaining Bitcoin's security ethos while enabling advanced functionalities, such as decentralized custody solutions, staking, atomic swaps, lending, and other cross-chain functionalities.

Applying zero trust in cross-chain environments is complex due to having to settle different blockchain states and the necessity to trust third parties for this state validation. We discuss how dWallet is setting the standard for what this should look like using their zero trust protocols.

Today's piece focuses on how potential upgrades to the Bitcoin technologies like BitVM and OPCAT are opening up fresh possibilities for utilizing Bitcoin. Bitcoin has often been viewed as "conservative", but recent advancements suggest it could leapfrog over previous limitations, learning from Ethereum's experiences.

We sit down Carsten of Cartesi to discuss how BitVM introduces new capabilities for offchain computation and enhances Bitcoin Script with innovative functions like hash implementations and Merkle tree proof validation. These advancements open up new opportunities for contributing to Bitcoin Script, potentially making Bitcoin a more efficient and versatile platform.

Despite Bitcoin's conservative approach, there's a growing recognition that it needs to evolve to support more complex use cases. The introduction of BitVM and OPCAT helps address this by simplifying implementations, reducing script size, and enabling more efficient processes.

However, the road ahead isn't without challenges. There isn't enough experimental data to predict how new implementations will work in practice, and there's skepticism about the safety of large amounts of BTC the asset on L2s.

One of the best parts about our modular thesis is that it also applies to Bitcoin. We are seeing the same ideas of bringing next-gen VMs to Bitcoin scaling in the same way that we see with with Ethereum rollups. Lees meer

Notably, the tech hurdles to actually get an SVM rollup on bitcoin is much harder.

Today we are specifically focusing on integrating the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) onto Bitcoin. This idea aims to bring the fastest programmable execution layer to Bitcoin.

In our interview with Chase from Molecule, we dive deep into the technical aspects and potential of SVM. He shares insights on why the team believes next-gen VMs, like SVM, can significantly enhance Bitcoin's capabilities.

One of the primary challenges with Bitcoin has been its inability to natively support smart contracts and dApps. Molecule addresses this by exploring two main solutions: sidechains and rollups (L2s). While sidechains are faster to market, they don't inherit Bitcoin's security. On the other hand, rollups settle on Bitcoin and inherit its security, though they require more R&D currently (as we've discussed thus far).

The discussion also touched on the importance of a modular approach to Bitcoin due to its L1 restrictions. Technologies like OP-CAT, expected to be implemented in the next 6-12 months, will simplify complex transactions, enabling *actual* ZK rollups.

As we continue to embark on this journey together, we hope you enjoy the technical learnings as much as we do!

Build on Bitcoin (BoB) has taken the approach of building a product (on mainnet now) which resembles more of an hybrid optimistic rollup between Ethereum and Bitcoin L2. They have been quick to market and have built a strong community.

Despite the challenges, such as the complexity of building on Bitcoin compared to other ecosystems, BoB is set on making advanced features like zk and account abstraction available over time.

BoB’s approach tackles three major challenges: aligning with Bitcoin’s ecosystem, creating a real ecosystem of builders & apps, and ensuring liquidity for new projects. By leveraging both Bitcoin’s security and the Ethereum network, BoB is working to establish this balance.

But, this comes with tradeoffs which we thoroughly address in this presentation.

BoB’s journey is divided into several phases. Phase 1 which is already live is their optimistic Ethereum rollup. Phase 2 introduces Bitcoin PoW security through merge mining, while Phase 3 aims to transition to a Bitcoin rollup with fraud proofs (using BitVM) and potential ZK capabilities.

We also discuss their OptiMine protocol, which similar to PBS, separates block production from block finalization for allowing faster finality leveraging Bitcoin's miners. This innovative approach ensures consistent block fees and enhances miner incentives for the longer term.

We aim to provide you with technical knowledge about the state of different Bitcoin scaling solutions. Are they sidechains? L2s? True rollups?

For the first episode, we're diving into Citrea, a project focused on bringing ZK to Bitcoin with a true rollup design (using Bitcoin for data availability).

We sat down with Orkun Kilic, to discuss Bitcoin’s security and ZK. Citrea is designed to use state differences and ZK proofs, making data usage more efficient and scalable from the jump. This approach overcomes the traditional limitations of Bitcoin, allowing for sophisticated onchain operations beyond simple transactions.

But, is using Bitcoin for data availability really a feasible path? We asked Orkun about this and more.

Citrea also introduced, Clementine, a peg mechanism which minimizes trust and ensures that BTC can be used seamlessly across different layers. By (soon) utilizing BitVM for optimistic verification of ZK proofs, Clementine provides an innovative way to maintain Bitcoin’s robust security while facilitating efficient data and state transitions.

Again, we asked Orkun just about all that we could to really understand why they've chosen to design Citrea in the way they have and he answered thoroughly.

We are huge proponents of the modular thesis as our entire brand is centered around this. We often challenge ideas which we have a shared thesis with as part of the channel, as well as welcome new ideas to the the mix. Lees meer

In today's video we got the chance to understand the idea behind the integrated thesis with Movement Labs and Omni have been pushing forward. While we did spend some times talking about the different terminology, to us that's not the important part.

In fact, we want to focus on less confusion for all of those involved in the modular ecosystem. We still prefer modular.

However, the important takeaways from this conversation stem from the ideas of solving the fragmentation issues at hand with modularity and "putting all the pieces of the puzzle" together in a cohesive way.

In today's episode, we understood the challenge of describing hybrid blockchain designs with various modular parts, leading to the term "integrated."

These were initially called "Frankenstein chains."

Unlike traditional monolithic blockchains, integrated solutions combine modular elements into cohesive, efficient systems. This approach draws parallels to microservices in modern software, offering flexibility and optimization...but isn't this just the meaning of modular?

    Kinda...

Integrated solutions, as posed by Rushi, Austin and others focus on reducing fragmentation, and bringing different modular parts together, thus enhancing user experience through abstraction and seamless interaction.

We found room to counter, learn, and understand the vision of where the modular movement is headed. Again, the terminology is not the core part so much as the idea of where we are headed as an ecosystem.

We are at the cusp of an acceleration of sovereign rollups built with Celestia underneath. This idea, while new to many, has been at the root of Celestia's roadmap since inception. In today's video we take you through everything you need to know about sovereign rollups, with a focus on Forma.

We discuss how Forma has been carefully designed to leverage the unique properties of sovereign rollups, a key distinction that allows it to operate independently of traditional chains by settling directly to Celestia. We go into some of the technicals such as their custom pre-compiles and a specialized execution environment meant to handle detailed metadata and intricate interactions between NFTs.

Their goal is to allow artists and onchain creators to build more nuanced and dynamic digital assets.

We ask about their thoughts about using TIA as gas token and how they plan to align Forma with a broader community of over 600,000 active wallets. We were also joined by Achilleas from the Celestia team to discuss Modularium and the upcoming weekly mint cycle.

We discuss how users can get involved by minting open editions (for a low mint cost such as 0.1 TIA) and why you should be paying attention to the first art and culture project built within Celestia's ecosystem...think about Art Blocks and Fidenza's for example.

Whether you're a builder or a collector, understanding sovereign rollups and Forma's approach to onchain creations is relevant.

Watch today's video to get up to speed with the first sovereign rollup in the Celestia ecosystem!

Intellectual property is defined as: "A category of property that includes intangible creations of the human intellect."

In today's episode, we talk with Jason Zhao, founder of Story Protocol. Story Protocol is bringing in a new way IP marketplaces are created onchain, coining the term "Programmable IP" in an effort to set a new standard in how IP is registered, managed, and monetized in the crypto space.

At the heart of Story's innovation is the programmability of IP rights, allowing creators to specify how their work can be used, shared, or remixed, fostering a dynamic marketplace of ideas. The first thing that came to our mind was our Pudgy Penguin NFTs as our profile pictures, seeing as there are many penguins in the collection being licensed out in the form of physical toys.

Story Protocol addresses the challenges of the traditional IP regime, which struggles with the nuances of generative AI and the digital replication of ideas.

By making IP rights transparent and enforceable on a blockchain, Story enhances collaboration and innovation across the creative industries. This approach not only democratizes creativity but also ensures that creators are fairly compensated, which is typically not the case in traditional IP industries.

Join us for an exploratory, not so technical discussion about the future of IP onchain and how these worlds are colliding as we speak.

Blockchains, as we know them today, are imperative. Lees meer

This means, we interact with every application needed to achieve a certain outcome onchain…we care about the process in achieving a specified end result.

The intent-centric future aims to flip this model on its head and usher in a different way of building and interacting with decentralized systems.

At the heart of this shift is the evolution from imperative to declarative programming in blockchain environments. This transition moves us away from specifying every step of a transaction (the 'how'), focusing instead on the desired outcomes (the 'what'). By embracing a declarative approach, blockchain technology becomes more intuitive and user-friendly, aligning more closely with the natural flow of human thought and reducing the complexity traditionally associated with onchain interactions.

In today’s video, Robbie sits down with Simon and Liesl to discuss Essential, the first declarative blockchain. Key to their design is a concept previously mentioned called 'intents'—declarations of what users want to achieve, without detailing the ‘how’.

They further explore the presence of solver networks in Essential, the architectural backbone of declarative blockchains, and how a novel system of constraints and rules governs blockchain state updates.

Join us as we explore how declarative blockchains are setting the stage for a more efficient, secure, and user-centric future.

In today's conversation we sat down with Mads Mathiesen, a long-time crypto researcher and now leading research for an elite crypto VC Maven11. He was writing about data availability and Celestia in 2019-2020, before anyone was really paying attention to modularity.

We talk about Maven 11's big bets on modularity and why VCs are under fire in the current regime. We also talk about the evolution of crypto funding models in from the 2017 ICO craze to the structured funding models of today, the landscape has evolved dramatically. We also explore potential shifts in VC strategies to better align with the unique timelines and risks inherent in crypto projects.

After that, the conversation went into the big bets that Maven 11 has placed on modularity and the key players which they invested in early. Recently, Mads put out a post about the commoditization of complements strategy which a ton of the modular parts play. We discussed this in-depth and we found a lot of commonalities in our theses as well.

Today, we're diving into a thought-provoking interview with Hannes from Equilibrium Labs to get all the answers . Equilibrium Labs specializes in low-level protocol engineering, helping protocols become safer, faster, and more usable.

The core idea of "Will ZK Eat the Modular Stack?" revolves around two major trends: modularity and the expansion of ZK technology.

We also explored the trade-offs between optimistic and ZK security, as well a look into an expanded modular stack. The full stack now includes over ten components like User Operation Abstraction, Shared Sequencing, Data Querying, Long-term State Storage, and Security, going beyond the traditional modular stack's four components of Execution, Settlement, Data Availability and Consensus.

We're on the cusp of early ZK adoption across various modules, with RaaS providers and rollup frameworks starting to offer more and more options.

Full adoption of a ZK-ified modular stack might be closer than we think.

We are seeing the rise of new L2s and appchains happening at a rapidly accelerating pace now.

Our second podcast as a team featuring Sam Kazemian from Frax Finance is here.

Frax started its journey as a decentralized stablecoin and has expanded significantly to include a broader range of DeFi tools and assets, making their modular L2 more appealing from our POV.

The backbone of Frax's operations is its modular L2, Fraxtal, which brings together protocols, liquidity, and monetary policies within one chain. Fraxtal enhances efficiency and transparency, setting a foundation for Frax to function akin to a decentralized central bank. Within this framework, Fraxtal uses an incentivization system known as Fraxtal points, which rewards popular contracts based on their usage and gas consumption.

This creates a reputation-based system that promotes sustainable development within the Frax ecosystem.

Additionally, we discussed how Sam plans to encourage the development of L3s atop of Fraxtal. This means dApps can launch their own chains while benefiting from the underlying Frax protocol and liquidity. This is part of Frax's fractal scaling vision, where L2 and L3s can generate revenue and contribute back to the overall ecosystem.

Explore how Fraxtal, powered by Frax, is morphing into its broader vision of becoming a decentralized central bank in todays episode!

  33. How Celestine Sloths Became The Modular Community Mascot

    LM 💤 🥱 Lees meer

Did you know that Celestia was originally called LazyLedger? The idea behind this laziness stems from Celestia's minimalistic properties. By solely focusing on data availability with minimal smart contracts & execution, Celestia is able to provide cheap and secure data verification while outsourcing execution to other chains.

In today's episode, we set out to understand the origin story of not only Celestia, but also the now iconic Celestine Sloth Society NFT collection. The success and significance of the Celestine Sloths Society has came at a perfect time for the modular community.

We were joined by Zaki Manian, and Steven (sk) from the Celestine Sloths team and Nick White from Celestia to discuss the impact and origin story of the Sloths.

The Celestine Sloths Society was introduced with a fair launch exclusively for Celestia stakers, requiring one TIA token to mint each NFT, with a limit of one per wallet. They quickly soared in value and even surpassed Bad Kids in floor price, the biggest collection in Cosmos.
We discussed this rise of popularlity as well as the choice of the sloth as a thematic symbol for the modular community which creatively reflects the concept of the 'lazy ledger'—a playful nod to Celestia. We went on to unveil potential future developments, like modular sloth bodies and the expansion of the sloth IP.

Many of the community members are excited for the potential modular project token distributions to Sloths (like Lava, Mitosis, Initia, Movement and others), we also touched on whether there could be a Sloth token in the future.

We enjoyed this conversation and hope you do as well!

  34. Horizontal vs Vertical Scaling Debate

    1 mei 2024 · 48 min

Horizontal or vertical scaling...which way, western man?
In today's discussion, we're taking a closer look at Nil's strategic approach to blockchain scalability, focusing on the integration of horizontal scaling for Ethereum. We discuss the core idea behind Ethereum as the ultimate arbiter of truth for L2s, ensuring that any layer that claims to be an L2 can verify its activities through Ethereum's data availability and settlement guarantees.
We also discuss the state fragmentation situation at hand—an inherent issue when new chains are created, which leads to a lack of a unified global state. This fragmentation complicates interactions between different rollups within the Ethereum ecosystem.
To address this, we take a look at horizontal and vertical scaling...
Horizontal scaling involves adding more machines to distribute workload and enhance performance without significant hardware trade-offs, while vertical scaling focuses on enhancing the capabilities of a single machine, which can lead to higher costs and potential centralization.
We further went on to explore the nuances of modular versus monolithic architectures, Avi clarifies that neither inherently offers superior scalability. Instead, true scalability depends on effectively managing and expanding computational resources across the network.
Join us for a technical discussion around zkSharding, horizontal scaling, and the key differences in the modular vs. monolithic scaling approaches.

  35. Where Sovereign Labs Fits In The Modular Thesis

The general idea and thesis we share is that we will see 1000s of appchains and the frameworks which are building for that future are in a good spot. In addition, we also believe there will be a ton of zkVMs (as introduced to us by Cem during this video) which will power rollups going forward.
This is also part of our "we don't need any more traditional EVM, general purpose L2s" thesis.
In today's video, were taking a closer look at Sovereign Labs. Sovereign is a project we've heard quite a bit about in the modular stack, which is builiding an SDK to launch zkRollups. Our discussion with the founder Cem Ozer, unpacks more of our thesis above.
We started talking about Cem's reasoning behind the name "Sovereign Labs" and touched on the noisy neighbor problem which sovereign rollups solve. We went on to discuss how the Sovereign SDK utilizes Rust-based machines, is partnered with leading zkVM providers like Risc Zero & Succinct, interoperability baked in for every rollup within Sovereign, and how all of this leads to providing a great user experience.
While we are particularly excited about Sovereign SDK, we managed to push back on some of the design choices such as not having their own underlying chain for distribution, and why a builder would choose the Sovereign SDK over a different stack like Cosmos SDK, OP stack, ZK stack and others.
We also found a quick moment at the end to ask Cem about their plans to decentralize Sovereign Labs, and what that future may look like.
Whether you are a developer, a power user, or a modularity enthusiast, learning about the Sovereign SDK and how builders are thinking about laying the ground work for the modular expansion is a worthy endeavor!
    Hope you enjoy.

At what point does ideological alignment affect your technological decision making?
The essence of Ethereum alignment involves a commitment to its core principles — decentralization, security, permissionlessness, and scalability. This deep-rooted alignment goes beyond the technical, touching on Ethereum’s broader moral compass, which aims to question and redefine the societal and economic impacts of crypto.
As we all know, Vitalik isn't exactly a big fan of memecoins.
In today's discussion, we sat down with the community lead of Taiko, an emerging zk-based L2 to discuss alignment with Ethereum.
For Taiko, alignment with Ethereum is more than strategic; it's a commitment to shared growth. By allocating 1% of their tokens to Ethereum’s development, they reinforce their support and ensure mutual advancement.
This allows them to attract top-tier developer talent, it’s about building resilient, censorship-resistant systems that reflect the vision of early blockchain pioneers while focusing on public goods over private gains.
In this piece, we unpack how Taiko’s integration into the Ethereum ecosystem not only supports Ethereum but also sets a precedent for all rollups.

Rollups as we know them today are more centralized than we'd like. Lees meer

Basically, rollups operate using a secure multi-sig and centralized sequencer for transaction batching and ordering.

This isn't good for a multitude of reasons, notably censorship resistance. We are trying to build resilient, long-lasting systems in crypto and to do this effectively these systems need to be sufficiently decentralized...or else we are at risk of nation-state intervention.

Today, we focus on the critical topic of fraud proofs within rollups. Verifiability is integral to enhancing the scalability and security of Ethereum-based solutions without sacrificing the decentralized foundation which Vitalik has created for us.

Security varies significantly across different rollups currently. Some are based on a permissioned set of validators, while others are advancing with permissionless algorithms that resist both delay and civil attacks.

We are here to analyze these variations, particularly looking at how recent innovations, like the Kineti algorithm, utilize computation hashes and structured tournament brackets to meet these challenges head-on. The goal of our discussion is to provide a comprehensive understanding of how fraud proofs work, why they matter, and what role they play in building a more censorship resistant Ethereum.

By the end of this technical session, you'll have a clearer understanding of the complexities involved in fraud proof design and where we are headed as a community to make the modular future a verifiable one.

Today is the launch of the transferable $SAFE token, for the safe multisig users on Ethereum mainnet. The tokens had to be claimed many months, if not years, ago. Safe has been pioneering the idea of smart accounts and has made many advancements in account abstraction technology. Our discussion with co-founder, Richard Meissner, aims to provide clarity on how these developments could influence the Ethereum ecosystem going forward.

Account abstraction is a crucial innovation that introduces greater flexibility in how accounts are defined and managed on the Ethereum blockchain. With initiatives like ERC-4337 and EIP-3074, Safe is exploring different approaches to the current UX situation.

We discussed how these technical enhancements such as session keys, automatic transfers, and adjustable transaction limits, aim to make blockchain use more user-friendly and secure. The overarching goal is to achieve native account abstraction at the protocol level, which could significantly improve how users interface with dApps.

However, we went into detail about a sticky situation revoling the diverging paths of ERC-3074, which emphasizes empowering externally owned accounts, and ERC-4337, which focuses on smart accounts, and illustrated the pro's and con's of each approach.

Central to these efforts is the $SAFE token, which has become transferable today and plays a vital role in governance and incentivization within the Safe ecosystem.

As we delve into these topics, we aim to equip you with a thorough understanding of how Safe's latest updates not only affect their platform but also have the potential to impact broader crypto UX. Whether you are deeply involved in building DeFi applications or an everyday user like us, these developments from Safe are crucial for anyone interested in where we go from here.

Being the hub of liquidity for the modular ecosystem assets (TIA, DYM, OSMO), Osmosis plays an important role for the space.

In today's interview with co-founder Sunny Aggarwal, we discuss the recent rise of Celestine Sloths and how features like the Skip API allows for seamless cross-chain transactions, enabling users to mint NFTs on Stargaze by swapping currencies through Osmosis in a single transaction.

This is a mega leap forward in interchain fluidity and for all of those who minted Sloths, you understand.

We then went onto discuss the Mad Scientists collection which has recently gained traction, (Sunny's PFP) and how the tech behind this collection works. We discussed Backbone Labs and the plan to distribute a significant portion of protocol revenues to holders, and whether or not this "real yield" is bullish.

Shortly after, we discussed the proposal from Osmosis about alloyed assets.

Osmosis has introduced the concept of alloyed assets, which aggregrate various tokens into a unified asset pool to manage liquidity more effectively. This approach not only mitigates risks associated with individual bridge failures but also streamlines asset management across chains, thus simplifying the user experience significantly.

But, is it really the best solution? We asked Sunny about the risks associated, some edge cases, and really dug into some areas where we feel they may have fell short...

Sunny stepped up to the plate and addressed our concerns as always.

Finally, towards the end of the podcast we talked about the hyperbitcoinization of Cosmos with players like Babylon and others. Sunny is pretty excited about this and we talked in-depth about this new phenomenon of bringing BTC to Cosmos and other ecosystems.

In today’s presentation, we sit down with John Adler, an Ethereum OG and creator of optimistic rollups. We take a deep, technical dive through the various node types (full, light, and partial) in Celestia’s architecture.

After that, we took a second to digest and summarize and then dove right into Blobstream, another cornerstone of Celestia's approach. Blobstream acts as a one-way relay for data attestations between Celestia and other blockchains and recently has been deployed in testnet on Base and Arbitrum Orbit.

We also touched on the development of Succint’s Blobstream X, and their zk version of Blobstream.

Finally, we asked some rapid fire questions about Celestia’s design and John’s perspectives on the modular space at large.

    Enjoy!

Not sure we need to write too much about this one! Lees meer

We mostly laughed and had a good time while understanding the definitions of some key terms in the space. Togruhl, one of the early Ethereum contributors and Scroll co-founders, gave us a presentation on his mental models for modular and monolithic design structures.

What was particularly interesting was the idea which Togruhl posed about the convergence of these two ideologies into nearly the same place.

Monolithic chains will modularize. Modular chains will enshrine more functionality.

We also asked if he thinks Celestia is more of a competitor for Ethereum than Solana. Togruhl then posed the question “Is Celestia really modular?” which was kind of mindblowing.

    Big definitions guy over here.

We think you’ll really enjoy this one and we had a bunch of great takeaways which were driven by out of the box thinking.

Finally! Wormhole $W token is here. After a three year journey of shipping filled of ups and downs, Wormhole has announced they are taking the path to decentralizing their community. Lees meer

If you've been navigating the onchain world, you've probably heard the buzz about Wormhole's token, $W (and hopefully qualified for the airdrop).

Wormhole has long stood as a critical infrastructure in the blockchain world, offering a bridge that seamlessly connects over 30 chains across five different runtimes. At its core, $W aims to fortify the bridge between diverse blockchain ecosystems, rewarding those who've journeyed with Wormhole over the years.

We discussed the reward distribution mechanism of the historic users of Wormhole and specific NFT communities like MadLads. We also talked about the emphasis on cross-chain governance and the general tokenomics of $W. From exploring incentives for governance participants to contemplating novel uses within the Wormhole ecosystem, Robinson and the Wormhole team have their sights set on targets for this year.

Congrats to everyone who qualified, and hope you enjoy this!

  48. Modular March EP 16: Where Eclipse & SVM Fit in The Modular Thesis

Typically, you wouldn’t think of Solana having a strong footing in the modular thesis. After all, the design choices they have elegantly pioneered (credit where credit is due) revolve around scaling a single state machine. Lees meer

This simply won’t scale to billions of users, and they will need to modularize.

However, the extremely performant and extensible Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) is an effective tool to build an extremely fast rollup atop Ethereum. We can all be friends here, right?

Welcome to today's Modular March presentation, where we take our first dive as a team into the fascinating world of Eclipse and its modular approach to blockchain scalability and security. For those who've been around the block(chain), you know the drill: scalability often comes at the cost of complexity or security.

Yet, Eclipse offers high throughput without the mess of state fragmentation via their flexible architecture. They're mixing the best of both worlds - Solana's speed and Ethereum's security, with a splash of Celestia for that decentralized data layer cherry on top.

We enjoyed this presentation with Sydney while also trying to understand where the tradeoffs or weaknesses in this design lie. We found some edge-cases but what was most interesting was the application possibilities as a result of using the SVM.

We had some solid takeaways, you’ll enjoy this.

  49. Modular March EP 15: Where Espresso Fits In The Modular Thesis

We really enjoyed this presentation. Lees meer

While we’ve had multiple shared sequencers talks on Modular March, each one has been far different. Today’s deep dive is around the game theory and incentive designs behind creating a rollup ecosystem which feels completely seamless and interoperable.

At its core, Espresso leverages a two part system to enforce how transactions are ordered and finalized across rollups via its sequencer. This system mirrors Ethereum's, but with a twist, aiming to streamline interactions between different rollups and thereby improve user experience significantly.

We discussed the based sequencing approach, their auction & lottery mechanism, and where Espresso fits in the broader modular thesis.

While we are bullish on Espresso (and Ellie is amazing), we didn’t let their vision go untouched so to speak. There were areas where we pushed back around the incentive designs and whether or not this would actually work in practice. We also tried to understand why potentially making things more complex is really the solution for scaling the modular L2 landscape. Also, if Espresso is another chain with trust assumptions, what tradeoffs does that bring for rollup operators?

Finally the big question…Will rollup operators really want to use Espresso if it could cause a big revenue reduction? Ellie flipped that narrative on its head, ever so graciously. She helped us understand how Espresso works under the hood and answered our questions.

We were impressed and left feeling extremely optimistic on shared sequencing.

Happy April Fools Day (no jokes here, yet!) & let’s have a great week!

Today, in less than 10 minutes, we hear the vision from Avail’s head of product Dan Mills live from Modular Day in ETHDenver.

Created in 2020 as part of Polygon, Avail emerged in response to Ethereum's shift toward a rollup-centric architecture, identifying a critical need for enhanced data availability in support of data-hungry rollups. Avail's foundational product, AvailDA, addresses this need by providing scalable, raw block space without necessitating base layer execution features (aka a specialized, modular blockchain).

Through the use of validity proofs and KZG polynomial commitments, AvailDA ensures that light clients can trust the data's integrity through efficient random sampling.

However, Dan thought past first order consequences and like many of us now realize, there will be thousands of chains. To counter this, Avail is introducing Nexus, a unification layer based on aggregating proofs from various chains to guarantee the accuracy of execution and state transitions.

We also dive into Avail Fusion, the eventual security layer and third part of the Avail Trinity.

Stay up to speed on the biggest upcoming modular project launch, Avail, in less than 10 minutes with Andy.
