  1. Why You Probably Don't Need an MRI for Your Back Pain | Dr. Grant Elliott

Think about the last time you hurt your back. Did you stop moving? Avoid bending over? Worry that one wrong move might make everything worse? What if those instincts are exactly what's keeping you in pain? Lees meer

According to a 2023 study in The Lancet Rheumatology, low back pain affected 619 million people worldwide in 2020, and that number is projected to reach 843 million by 2050. Many of them will be sent for an MRI, shown a disc bulge, and told surgery is the answer. My guest today, Dr. Grant Elliott, says that for most people, it isn't.

Grant's own back pain ended his competitive mountain biking career and led him to become a chiropractor. Today, he runs RehabFix, one of the largest online back pain programs in the world. We talk about why so many people are overimaged, the few warning signs that actually call for an MRI, and why he tells patients to "kiss the pain" instead of pushing through it.

"Just know that your body is strong and resilient. It was made to adapt." ~ Dr. Grant Elliott

What would you do if your son suddenly stopped speaking, lost skills he'd already learned, and the doctors kept telling you everything was fine? How long would you keep asking questions? Lees meer

According to the CDC, approximately 1 in 31 eight-year-old children in monitored U.S. communities has been identified with autism, compared with 1 in 150 in 2000. Behind those numbers are families trying to understand a diagnosis and figure out what comes next. My guest today, Tracy Slepcevic, knows that experience firsthand.

When Tracy's son Noah began losing his speech and motor skills, she struggled to get doctors to take her concerns seriously. His eventual autism diagnosis led her to explore dietary changes, therapies, and biomedical interventions in search of ways to support him. Today, Noah is a young adult who works, drives, and travels independently.

The rise in human life expectancy is one of medicine’s biggest achievements. In 1950, the global average was just over 46 years. Today, it has passed 73. But living longer has also given us more time to accumulate the cellular damage behind many diseases of later life.
That brings me to my guest, Aubrey de Grey. A biomedical gerontologist and creator of SENS, Aubrey sees accumulated damage as something future medicine could repair again and again, potentially pushing biological decline further into the future.
Aubrey and I discuss his work with mice, the possibility of rejuvenating people later in life, and his idea of longevity escape velocity, where advances in medicine keep buying us enough time to benefit from whatever comes next.

  15. Why a Heart Attack at 34 Changed the Way He Thinks About Heart Disease | Dr. Stephen Hussey

Six months before having a widowmaker heart attack at 34, Dr. Stephen Hussey had a coronary calcium score of zero. He exercised regularly, ate a whole-food diet, and says his other health markers gave him little reason to think a heart attack was coming. Lees meer

After surviving it, he started questioning whether the usual markers tell us enough about heart health. That led him to look more closely at blood flow and what happens inside the arteries as heart disease develops.

Dr. Hussey shares why sunlight and our daily light environment have become such a big part of how he thinks about cardiovascular health. He explains his interest in structured water and why his experience has made him question how much we can learn from testing alone.

Over the last four decades, obesity in the U.S. has nearly doubled. Research has found testosterone levels in American men declining by around 1% per year since the 80s. Most alarmingly, global sperm concentration has fallen by more than 50% since the 1970s. Lees meer

For people struggling with their weight, hormones, or fertility, figuring out what’s contributing to the problem can take years. Dr. Wendy Myers believes one culprit deserves more attention: the environmental chemicals and heavy metals we’re exposed to every day.

According to Dr. Myers, these exposures can interfere with the way our hormones function and may even make losing weight more difficult. She explains why minerals are such an important part of her approach to detox and what we can do to reduce the toxic load we encounter in everyday life.

There are roughly 650,000 full-time sworn law enforcement officers in the United States and more than a million active physicians. But how many people have spent decades in law enforcement, served on a SWAT team, and then become a doctor? Probably not many.
My guest, Dr. Mark Sherwood, is one of them.
That career change gave Dr. Sherwood an unusual perspective on stress, health, and aging. He explains why he thinks stress is something we do rather than something we have, and why our genes leave us with more room to influence our health than many people assume.
We also talk about hormone replacement therapy and the rise of GLP-1 drugs, including Dr. Sherwood’s own experiment with retatrutide. Along the way, he explains how he measures biological age and why longevity comes down to staying capable for as long as possible.

  21. Why Nighttime Erections Are So Good at Predicting Heart Health | Elliot Justin, MD

Cholesterol, blood pressure, and family history are the usual predictors doctors check for heart health. What most don't mention is that nighttime erections can predict it too. Lees meer

It turns out that tracking this single signal can flag cardiovascular risk years before symptoms show up. Doctors have known this for decades, yet no one outside a sleep lab has ever actually tracked it. Well, no one, except for Elliot Justin.

Doctor Justin is an emergency physician and healthcare entrepreneur. For years, overlooked signals like this one kept pulling his attention, the kind of data hiding in plain sight that could change how men catch heart disease early. Eventually, that pull led him to build a device that turns this nightly signal into something anyone can measure at home.

That same discipline can carry you through school and into a successful career. But health and fitness play by different rules, and sheer willpower often isn’t enough.

Ben Brown, head nutrition coach at BSL Nutrition, sees this all the time with high-performing executives. They’ve built careers by pushing harder, working longer, and refusing to quit. But with health, that same mindset can backfire.

Willpower works more like a battery than a personality trait. The harder you lean on it, the faster it drains. That’s why, according to Ben, long-term success often comes down to better systems, not more discipline.

  24. Why Aging Accelerates Instead of Moving in a Straight Line | Dr. Jeffrey Gladden

As you get older, you start to notice that aging doesn't move at a steady pace. It picks up speed. And the tools most people reach for to fight it - peptides, hormones, the usual stack - are built to fix a problem that moves in a straight line. Lees meer

A top interventional cardiologist for decades, Dr. Jeffrey Gladden watched his health collapse in his 50s. When a doctor chalked it up to age and offered an antidepressant, he spent two and a half years rebuilding his biology from scratch instead, and that process became the foundation of everything he does now.

Dr. Gladden built a five-part system around that idea, one that treats aging as something to get ahead of rather than patch after the fact.

  25. 50% of Sudden Cardiac Deaths Happen With No Warning | Dr. Kevin White

In America, sudden cardiac death kills roughly 300,000 to 400,000 people every year. And in nearly half of those cases, there was no diagnosed heart disease beforehand. Meaning, the person looked fine right up until they weren't.
Dr. Kevin White spent over two decades in the emergency room watching that pattern repeat itself, treating people his age for problems that had been building for years without anyone catching them. That shift is what pushed him out of reactive medicine and into a practice built around finding what's wrong before it becomes an emergency.
His approach starts with a full diagnostic workup instead of a guess, pulling bloodwork, body composition scans, and metabolic markers most doctors never order. From there, he gets into peptides, rapamycin, and PCSK9 inhibitor therapy, and how each one plays a role in his patients' longevity plans.

A low number doesn't rule out a blockage. Even if you feel fine, your arteries might not be clean, and that alone could put you on a path toward a heart attack you never saw coming.

We examine results from one of Dr. Davis's patients who had a cholesterol reading around 115, was in good shape, and looked as healthy as could be on paper. Over the next year, his plaque doubled, traced back to pesticide exposure from a house he'd just moved into next to a golf course.

We also get into why a genetic marker called APOE4 can make a keto diet dangerous for certain people, and why a calcium score of zero doesn't mean the arteries are clear.

  28. Why Some World Cup Athletes Are Using GLP-1s | Ashley Koff, RD

If you have talked about weight in the last few years, you’ve had to mention Ozempic, Mounjaro, or any other GLP-1. And of course, you had to agree that GLP-1s are the worst thing to happen to weight loss since someone convinced us that celery has negative calories. Lees meer

But are these medications really the villain everyone makes them out to be?

Ashley Koff has been studying GLP-1 and GIP since 2004, long before Ozempic became a household name. She calls these medications hormone replacement therapy and builds her entire approach around that idea.

During our conversation, Ashley discussed a client who lost 60 pounds on a GLP-1 and had to relearn her hormones to keep it off. Somewhere in that story is a scale that lies to you and a seven-day trick that can undo years of artificial sweeteners.

Doctors take an oath to care for their patients, but that care rarely extends to themselves. Lees meer

Dr. Jerry Mixon spent 21 years as a country doctor delivering babies and setting bones, and by his late 40s, the job had slowly hollowed him out. He was depressed, overweight, exhausted, and watching his marriage fall apart under the hours.

So he decided to test something on himself before he ever offered it to a patient: rebuild every major hormone back to where it stood in his twenties. Now, at 79, he runs three miles most mornings, benches 200 pounds, and still carries the hormone profile of a man half his age.

As a teenager, Lauren Leiva was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. The steroids doctors put her on broke her bones, changed the shape of her face, and left her looking sick.
She was in and out of hospitals for years, treated by a system that was guessing as much as it was healing, and she remembers feeling like an experiment rather than a patient.
That experience is the reason she built her entire practice around one idea: do no harm. Now known as "The Queen of Biohacking," Dr. Leiva works with everyone from stroke patients to NFL athletes. She also spends as much time warning people about what not to do to their bodies as she does teaching them what works.

  31. Can Ketosis Be the Answer to Easy Weight Loss | Ben Azadi

Health has been a sensitive topic in the United States for nearly half a century at this point. So the fact that 9 out of 10 Americans are not metabolically healthy is alarming, to say the least.
While most people are unaware of this, those who are often try to fix the problem by changing their diet. Sure, that helps, but it usually misses the actual switch that needs to be flipped. And that switch is, of course, insulin.
Ben Azadi, a returning guest, has spent years teaching people how to work with that switch instead of around it, and his answer isn't more restrictions. It's knowing when to go into ketosis, and just as importantly, when to come out.

  32. Sitting or Smoking, Which Does More Damage to Your Health | Dr. Alan Rozanski

Cigarette smoking rates have dropped to historic lows. High-quality generic statins are highly affordable. With all of the advanced diagnostics, effective medications, and a better overall understanding of cardiovascular risk, managing cholesterol is easier than ever.
Yet, heart disease still causes roughly 1 in every 3 deaths in the US and is, in fact, the number one cause of death worldwide. For decades, Dr. Alan Rozanski kept seeing patients whose hearts were failing them in ways cholesterol numbers and stress tests couldn't explain.
He stopped looking only at arteries and started looking at the whole person. Movement, mindset, emotion, connection, and purpose all shape a heart's health as much as anything on a chart. That search became the Six Domains of Health, the framework behind his career today.

Years before a Parkinson's diagnosis, most patients already show the same GI issues, and she believes that's not a coincidence but an early warning sign we've been ignoring. Find out all that and much more in this episode.

About 75% of people are actively trying to cut down on or completely cut out sugar from their diet. That is not surprising, because sugar contributes to serious illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer.
Unfortunately, cutting out every gram of added sugar might not be enough. Even if you manage to avoid sugar completely, your body will still produce fructose from stress, dehydration, alcohol, and high glycemic carbs.
That is what Chris Mearns has spent years studying. Chris believes fructose is not just a dietary problem but a biological survival switch that modern life keeps permanently stuck in the on position.

A bone fracture happens roughly every 30 seconds. However, most people do not find out their bones are fragile until they are already on the floor. By then, the window to prevent it has usually been open for decades.
For women, the lifetime risk of breaking a bone equals the combined risk of breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer. The bone density test most doctors rely on to catch this predicts less than half the people who will fracture. For men, it is even worse: closer to one in five
Dr. John Neustadt is a naturopathic physician and researcher who has spent his career working out what medicine should be measuring instead. His book Fracture-Proof Your Bones is the result of that work.

Dr. Bernstein is a clinical psychiatrist with 25 years of experience. But when two of his three sons developed autoimmune encephalitis, the conventional medicine he had trusted his entire career had almost nothing to offer. So he went out and found the answers himself.
What Dr. Bernstein found made me so interested in sitting down and having a discussion with him. He believes depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder are not brain chemistry problems. Instead, he thinks these are metabolic disorders, and more surprisingly, that they could be treated with a relatively simple lifestyle change.
Dr. Bernstein believes that going keto and introducing a strict workout regimen can treat conditions that most psychiatrists medicate and move on from. During our conversation, we talked about his sons, how ketosis bypasses brain insulin resistance, and how the upcoming studies could change psychiatry forever.

A 15-year government-funded study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that none of it changed the death rate.
Bringing that research to the table is Dr. Stephen Petteruti, a men's health physician with over 30 years in practice. He thinks there is a better way to handle prostate cancer that can keep men out of the operating room and their vitality intact.

We also get into why so many kids diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia were never tested for the one thing that could explain everything.

  41. How an Auditor Rewrote the Science of Gut Health and Brain Disease With Martha Carlin

    16 juni 2026 · 1 uur 7 min

    Afspelen
Martha Carlin wasn't a scientist. She was an auditor at one of the largest accounting firms in the world. Then her husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's at 44. She couldn't just sit back and watch him succumb to it. So she set out to find what caused it.
What followed was a 20-year-long second career. Within a month of throwing out the pantry and filtering the family's water, her husband's tremor was already retreating. He managed to stay off medication for years.
When she stumbled onto a book about the human microbiome a decade later, the pieces clicked into place. She quit her executive job at 50 to fund the research herself.
Martha and I get into the moment she connected her husband's childhood antibiotics to his Parkinson's, and the probiotic that took his Parkinson's score from a 35 down to a 20.
"We are more microbial than we are human." ~ Martha Carlin

  42. What 40 Days Without Food Reveals About the Human Body, With Casey Ruff

In the 1960s, researchers had people fast for 40 days straight. They expected some of them to die. Instead, their bodies adapted.
My guest this week, Casey Ruff, has spent nearly two decades helping people understand what's actually fueling their bodies, and most of what he's found runs against everything we've been taught.
A metabolic health coach who came up through lab testing before going all in on low-carb and carnivore approaches, Casey joins me to explain why the carbs you've been told you need for energy might be the very thing holding you back.
Casey and I talk about research that rewrote his thinking. Why nearly every diet eventually fails. And, most importantly, how your body is built to run on fat far better than you'd expect.
"Every diet fails. You do a diet and sure, you're going to lose weight, but after a while, your cravings get bigger, and your energy starts to go down." ~ Casey Ruff

About a quarter of adults in the United States now take at least four prescriptions a day. Most of them take more. Yet outside of antibiotics, almost nothing on the shelf is meant to cure you.
Closing that gap is what Danese Rexroad does. As Chief Clinical Officer at Ways2Well, she goes upstream of disease, asking why the body is breaking down rather than writing another script to cover it. Her belief is that the choices you make in your 30s and 40s decide whether you spend your 80s in the gym or in a nursing home.
We get into why perimenopause is hitting women in their 30s, and the bioidentical hormone study she says got it all wrong. She walks me through the trauma-room moment that flipped her thinking on the root cause. We also talk about her work with Jelly Roll, who walked in on 27 prescriptions and walked out on three.

  44. The Leading Cause of Disability in Women Under 50 With Dr. Amelia Scott Barrett

What do you think is the main cause of disability for women under 50? Is it cancer? Or maybe depression? Is it perhaps back pain? No. None of the above. The leading cause is migraine. Lees meer

Dr. Amelia Scott Barrett has spent her career staring at that fact from the inside. Only one in twenty people who have migraine ever gets properly diagnosed, and the rest spend years calling it tension or stress or sinus pressure while their brains discreetly change in the background. Two headache days a week is all it takes to start the damage.

Amelia and I get into the four biological systems she's identified as the root causes of migraine, as well as why the standard "pop a pill and power through" approach has let millions of women around the world down.

"Migraine is the number one cause of disability in women under 50. That is a huge impact on women who are right in the prime of their lives." ~ Dr. Amelia Scott Barrett

You can test negative for Lyme over and over. Your bloodwork can look fine. Even your doctor can tell you it's just stress. Meanwhile, the infection keeps doing damage. An estimated 3.5 million Americans go through this every year. Lees meer

Dr. Myriah Hinchey knows that better than most. She was bitten by a tick when she was around ten. Her Lyme test came back negative, and she was sent home. What followed were decades of strange anxiety and brain fog she couldn't explain, until everything finally crashed in her mid-thirties, and even her doctor brushed her off. She had to diagnose herself.

Myriah and I get into why the testing for so many of these conditions misses what's going on, and how chronic infections sit underneath everything from autoimmune disease to neurological symptoms that most doctors blame on something else.

  46. How the Way You Breathe Is Shortening Your Life With Dr. John Douillard

Whatever shows up in your bloodwork has usually been building for a long time. The problem with modern medicine is that it steps in at the end of that process, not the beginning.
Dr. John Douillard keeps coming back to one single question. Why do we wait so long? Forty years as a chiropractor and Ayurvedic practitioner have convinced him that the body starts dropping hints well before anything shows up on a test, and that most of us have been taught to wave those hints away until there's a real problem to deal with.
We dig into where the trouble usually starts, why so much of it traces back to your gut, and what a system that's been around for 5,000 years figured out about the body that our lab work still tends to miss.

Not long ago, the idea of keeping someone's memory and identity alive past death sat squarely in the realm of science fiction. Randal is one of the people trying to drag it into the lab.

Chris asks him how any of this would work, and Randal explains it in plain terms. Does who you are come down to the brain alone? What can split-brain studies tell us about consciousness being something we narrate to ourselves? And would an uploaded mind still need to sleep? Find out in this episode.

That's what Dr. Tracy Gapin has been sounding the alarm on for years. A board-certified urologist who spent 20+ years in traditional medicine before walking away in 2020, Dr. Gapin founded Peak Launch to address what most doctors won't: the root cause of the symptom.

Today's conversation digs into why standard testosterone reference ranges are basically worthless and why "normal" labs are lulling men into a false sense of security. Dr. Gapin also shares what most high performers get wrong about their hormones, their gut health, and the slow cortisol creep nobody warns them about.

"A 50-year-old man today has a testosterone level that's about half of what a 50-year-old man had 20 to 30 years ago, and it's declining by about 1% every year." ~ Dr. Tracy Gapin

That's the question Dr. Aaron Hartman ran into the day he met his foster daughter Anna. She came into the world facing more than her share of challenges, and doctors told the Hartmans she wouldn't walk, talk, or crawl.

When the standard recommendation came down to a feeding tube and a string of surgeries, Aaron and his wife said no. They were reported to Child Protective Services for wanting to feed their daughter food instead.

Anna is now 20, and she walks and talks just fine. Her story rebuilt her father's entire approach to medicine. Aaron sits down with Chris to talk about what he's learned along the way and the role healthy fats play in healing the brain. They discuss how the pharmaceutical research world really works from the inside and why purpose may be the most underrated longevity tool we have.
