  3. ev.news Tech: What The Tesla Roadster Fans And Thrusters Actually Do

    18 oktober 2026 · 22 min

Tesla says its new Roadster can reach 60 miles per hour in 0.81 seconds with only the rear wheels driven. In this episode of ev.news Tech, I explain how fans and gas thrusters help make that possible, and why the proposed car has changed so much since its announcement in 2017. Lees meer

Fans draw air from beneath the car, pressing the tyres harder against the road to improve acceleration, braking and cornering. Compressed-gas thrusters add force directly to the car, bypassing the tyres’ grip limit. We follow the engineering from the fan-equipped Performance version to the single-seat Rocket, which adds jets for lift and movement in the air, and explore what McMurtry and the student-built Mythen have already demonstrated.

Behind those bursts of speed are practical demands: keeping the battery cool, controlling airflow beneath a moving car and replenishing gas tanks after seconds of full-power use. We examine how Tesla is balancing power, weight and running time, where SpaceX and Optimus hardware fit into the design, and what comparisons with Rimac and BYD reveal about building an electric car that can keep performing.

Europe’s carmakers came to the Paris Motor Show 2026 ready to fight for the electric-car buyer. From the Renault Twingo’s character to the Peugeot E-208 GTi’s performance appeal, there was renewed confidence in making EVs people genuinely want. In this episode of ev.news, Martyn Lee explores a European fightback built on desirable design, practical choices and a rediscovery of what made these brands worth caring about. Lees meer

But the Chinese manufacturers didn’t arrive ready to surrender. They brought their strongest technology, with BYD’s Flash Charging ambitions illustrating how hard they are pushing the charging benchmark. Their growing manufacturing presence in Europe also makes this more complicated than a contest between imports and home-grown cars. Europe brought a convincing response, but has it closed the competitiveness gap—or simply made the competition more interesting?

That contest made Paris a brilliant motor show. Beyond the individual launches, the bigger story is what buyers stand to gain: more affordable options, more personality, more practical body styles and better reasons to choose electric. Not every promise is a production car yet, but the choice is already expanding. Ultimately, the consumer wins when manufacturers compete to build cars that fit people’s lives, rather than expecting people to fit around the cars available.

  13. ev.news Policy: Did China Just Outsmart Europe In Hybrids Deal?

    14 oktober 2026 · 26 min

    Afspelen
Europe’s hybrid-trade understanding with China looks like a victory for Brussels: an attempt to slow imports that escaped the additional duties on China-built battery-electric cars. But restricting Chinese imports and restricting Chinese brands are not the same thing. The central question is whether Europe has weakened its competitors—or encouraged them to become more deeply established inside its own car industry. Lees meer

China did not simply surrender. The proposed safeguard would cover other supplying countries, rather than single out China, while preserving Beijing’s rights to challenge the eventual rules. Both sides can also claim success by choosing different comparisons: Brussels measures the restriction against projected future exports, while Beijing points to potential growth over 2025 levels.

The restrictions could reshape competition rather than reduce it. Scarce import places may encourage Chinese manufacturers to prioritise more expensive models, putting pressure on the premium vehicles that generate substantial profits for European brands. They could also strengthen the incentive to manufacture inside Europe. Larger Chinese companies would be better positioned to fund that investment, potentially leaving Europe facing fewer Chinese competitors—but stronger ones.

That exposes the real policy choice: protecting European-owned brands is not the same as protecting European factories, suppliers and jobs. Genuine local manufacturing by Chinese companies could support the latter while challenging the former; merely assembling imported parts does not automatically establish European origin. Ultimately, Europe is buying time, not securing a technological victory. Success depends on whether its carmakers become more competitive—and how much value Chinese investment actually leaves in Europe.

With CATL batteries, LiDAR and Chinese assisted-driving software, Volkswagen is adopting the technology and pricing strategies of domestic competitors in an attempt to recover lost market share.

VOLKSWAGEN CHINA DELIVERIES FALL 38.5% IN THIRD QUARTER

Volkswagen Group's Chinese deliveries plunged 38.5% to 405,800 vehicles in the third quarter, contributing to a 14.3% decline in global deliveries to 1.885 million. Although electrified vehicle deliveries in China increased approximately 30%, they could not offset collapsing combustion-engine sales, intensifying pressure on Volkswagen to introduce competitively priced, locally developed electric models.

CHINA SUPPLIES OVER 75% OF BATTERIES SOLD WORLDWIDE

China now produces more than 75% of batteries sold worldwide, having established its dominance through sustained subsidies, protected domestic demand and manufacturing expertise that competitors cannot easily replicate. India illustrates the challenge, importing almost 84% of its lithium-ion batteries from China while operating just 1.4 GWh of its targeted 50 GWh domestic manufacturing capacity, highlighting the difficulty of building an independent battery industry without Chinese expertise.

This is ev.news Tech, with Martyn Lee.

BMW calls its new generation Neue Klasse. What matters is not how many cars carry the name, but how far the engineering can travel.

Walmart has doubled its US fast-charging network in roughly four months, reaching more than 1,000 stalls across 120 locations, with CCS and NACS chargers rated at up to 400 kW. The retailer was America's second-largest installer of new fast-charging ports in the second quarter, behind Tesla, establishing itself as a significant charging operator rather than simply hosting third-party equipment.

BYD ATTO 8 BRINGS NINE-MINUTE FLASH CHARGING TO EUROPE

BYD has unveiled the seven-seat Atto 8 electric SUV for Europe, featuring a 115 kWh Blade battery capable of a claimed 10–97% charge in nine minutes using dedicated Flash chargers, with two powertrains offering up to 405 miles of WLTP range. Arriving in early 2027, the SUV's charging capabilities depend on BYD's ambitious infrastructure rollout, targeting 3,000 European Flash charging stations by the end of 2027, while pricing and charging performance on conventional public chargers remain unknown.

LEAPMOTOR B03 SETS UP A RENAULT 5 CHALLENGE FOR 2027

Leapmotor will introduce its B03 electric supermini to the UK in early 2027, targeting the Renault 5 and Volkswagen ID Polo with an expected price in the low £20,000s, a 53 kWh battery and 242 miles of WLTP range. Its 145 kW motor delivers 0–62 mph in 7.6 seconds, while 133 kW DC charging enables a claimed 10–80% recharge in 21 minutes, with a spacious 405-litre boot strengthening its practicality credentials.

Volkswagen Group's global vehicle deliveries fell 9% to 6.01 million during the first nine months of 2026, with battery-electric deliveries declining 5% to 678,700, reflecting particularly severe weakness in China and the US. European EV demand tells a different story, with third-quarter electric deliveries rising 20%, EVs representing approximately 40% of the European order book and nearly 150,000 orders secured for forthcoming affordable electric models.

CHINA EV SHARE HITS 67% AS PETROL SALES SLUMP

Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles captured a record 67% of China's passenger car market in September, despite NEV sales falling 16.7% to 1.084 million, as overall car sales declined 28% and petrol sales plunged 43%. With domestic NEV sales down 10.6% across the first nine months but September exports surging 160% to 571,000 vehicles, Chinese manufacturers are increasingly dependent on overseas markets to sustain growth.

AVATR REVEALS T09 HYBRID WITH OVER 400KM EV RANGE

Targeting China's 500,000 yuan luxury SUV segment, the concept showcases Avatr's premium ambitions as the company targets expansion from 70 to more than 110 international markets by 2030.

AITO PLANS 2027 EUROPE ENTRY AS SALES DECLINE

Huawei-backed AITO plans to launch four premium SUVs in Europe in 2027, with EU vehicle certification and Euro NCAP safety assessments underway as manufacturing partner Seres seeks growth beyond China. Citroën has unveiled an electric 2CV concept at the Paris Motor Show, targeting European production in 2028 and a starting price of around €15,000, potentially undercutting the Renault Twingo and Dacia Spring. The lightweight city car aims to recreate the original's affordable, practical appeal, although its battery, range and charging specifications remain unconfirmed, and the target price may depend on proposed EU rules for small EVs.

VW’S FOUR SMALL EVS ATTRACT NEARLY 150,000 ORDERS

Volkswagen Group says its four new affordable electric cars — the ID. Polo, ID. Cross, CUPRA Raval and Škoda Epiq — have attracted almost 150,000 orders ahead of deliveries, demonstrating early demand for smaller European-built EVs. All four share the front-wheel-drive MEB+ platform, with over 80% common components, and will be manufactured in Spain as part of a €10 billion electrification programme designed to reduce costs through economies of scale.

EU PROJECT TESTS CCS BIDIRECTIONAL CHARGING

The four-year EV4EU European research project has successfully demonstrated bidirectional CCS DC charging, allowing electric vehicles to return electricity to homes and energy networks, with Portuguese trials reporting an average 8.6% reduction in household charging costs and up to 21.9% greater renewable-energy integration. Trials across four countries also explored virtual power plants and grid balancing, but widespread adoption still depends on compatible hardware, supportive regulations and financial incentives for vehicle owners.

GEELY PLANS CANADIAN LAUNCH AS US MARKET STAYS SHUT

Geely plans to enter Canada in 2027, establishing dealerships and service operations following an agreement between Ottawa and Beijing allowing limited Chinese EV imports, while US tariffs and restrictions continue to block Chinese manufacturers. With Geely's Chinese domestic sales down 23% and exports up 169% in the first nine months of 2026, international expansion is increasingly important, although Canadian launch models and sales dates remain unconfirmed.

VOLKSWAGEN TELLS 22,524 ID.4 OWNERS TO LIMIT CHARGING

Volkswagen is recalling 22,524 US ID.4 electric SUVs from model years 2023–2026 over a potential battery fire risk linked to charging above 80%, instructing affected owners to restrict charging while engineers investigate. Although Volkswagen estimates just 0.1% of recalled vehicles have the defect, it has not identified the root cause or developed a permanent remedy, leaving owners with reduced usable battery capacity and potentially shorter driving ranges.

Volkswagen is replacing the ID.4 and ID.5 with the ID. Tiguan, combining familiar SUV styling with redesigned interiors, physical climate controls, conventional door handles and steering-wheel buttons, addressing some of the biggest criticisms of its current electric models. Built on the updated MEB+ platform, it offers 58 kWh or 77 kWh batteries, power outputs from 140 kW to 220 kW, and up to 600 km of WLTP range, alongside standard one-pedal driving, vehicle-to-load capability and up to 2,000 kg towing capacity. German orders open on 13 October, starting at €42,695, with production in Emden and European deliveries expected in early 2027, followed by a planned US launch. Having sold more than 950,000 ID.4 and ID.5 vehicles since 2021, Volkswagen is now shifting away from making EVs feel fundamentally different from combustion cars, hoping the recognisable Tiguan name and more conventional ownership experience will help reverse a 28.2% decline in electric deliveries during the first half of 2026.

BMW SURVEY FINDS 42% WANT 300-MILE EV RANGE

A BMW survey of 1,005 Americans found that while 73% drive no more than 75 miles daily, 42% want at least 300 miles of EV range, demonstrating the gap between practical driving needs and purchasing expectations. Price remains the biggest obstacle for 51% of respondents, while 53% would be more interested in an EV capable of adding 150 miles in 10 minutes, suggesting affordability and charging speed could be as important as battery range.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt exceeded its 262-mile EPA combined rating by travelling 280.3 miles at a steady 60 mph in an independent highway test, averaging 4.1 miles/kWh from its 65 kWh LFP battery. Separate tests produced 243.1 miles at 70 mph and 219.3 miles at 80 mph, demonstrating how significantly motorway speeds influence EV efficiency and the distance between charging stops.

The performance model accelerates to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds, sacrifices just 29 miles of range compared with the iX3 50, and will open for orders in early 2027, with its powertrain also destined for the new iX4.

NORWAY HITS 98.8% EV SALES AS TESLA TAKES A QUARTER

Battery-electric vehicles accounted for a record 98.8% of Norway's 18,733 new-car registrations in September 2026, with Tesla capturing 26.3% of the market, almost entirely through the Model Y. Although EVs represented 97.9% of new registrations across the first nine months, they account for just 35.3% of Norway's existing passenger-car fleet, demonstrating how much longer the transition of vehicles already on the road will take.

EU EV SALES RISE 45% AS CHEAPER MODELS ARRIVE

EU battery-electric sales increased 45% to 1.64 million vehicles between January and August 2026, reaching a 22% market share as manufacturers expanded their electric ranges and the number of models priced below €25,000 was expected to double. Transport & Environment attributes much of this growth to EU fleet-emissions regulations, arguing that weakening future targets could undermine the expansion of affordable electric vehicles.

MG SETS UK SALES RECORD WITH 91.6% ELECTRIFIED

MG achieved its biggest UK sales month in September, registering 18,026 vehicles, up 23.7% year-on-year, and becoming Britain's fourth-largest car brand for the month, with electrified models accounting for 91.6% of sales, including conventional hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Its battery-electric registrations grew 65.2% during the first nine months of 2026, more than twice the wider UK EV market's 30.3% growth, demonstrating how MG is gaining ground through both fully electric and hybrid vehicles.

Arriving in early 2027, the Volkswagen MEB-based A2 prioritises aerodynamic efficiency and practicality, reviving a philosophy that struggled commercially 21 years ago but could prove more appealing in the electric era.

However, total passenger-car sales fell 8% to 407,200 as Chinese sales collapsed 31%, exposing the growing tension between Mercedes’ successful electric transition and its weakening position in the world’s largest automotive market.

JAGUAR TYPE 01 PUTS £120,000 PRICE ON ITS ELECTRIC REINVENTION

Jaguar’s Type 01 is a 5.2-metre electric GT built on a bespoke 850V architecture, with a 118 kWh usable battery, up to 350 kW charging, around 450 miles of WLTP range and UK pricing now confirmed from £130,000, rising well beyond £150,000 for highly specified cars. Production begins at Solihull in 2027, but Jaguar’s bigger gamble is whether selling only tens of thousands of dramatically more expensive EVs can sustain the brand when Aston Martin, Porsche and Rolls-Royce are all moving more cautiously on electrification.

TESLA FINALLY TURNS MODEL 3 AND Y INTO HOME BATTERIES

New U.S. Model 3 and Model Y cars ordered from 1 October 2026 will gain Powershare Home Backup, allowing up to 11.52 kW of bidirectional power and enough stored energy to support an average home for roughly two days or more. The catch is that Tesla still requires a Powerwall 3 and compatible Wall Connector, meaning cars carrying perhaps 70–85 kWh of usable energy strengthen Tesla’s home-energy ecosystem rather than replacing its 13.5 kWh stationary battery.

PORSCHE PLANS TO PROFIT FROM SELLING FEWER CARS

Porsche wants to reduce its break-even point below 200,000 vehicles a year, versus 279,449 deliveries in 2025, through 9,000 job cuts, fewer managers and model variants, and lower development costs. Its strategy now accepts a slower EV transition, with a new combustion and PHEV SUV coming in 2028 and the electric K1 delayed indefinitely, as Porsche redesigns itself to remain profitable at substantially lower volumes.

HYUNDAI IONIQ 3 UNDERCUTS RENAULT 5 AT £18,495
Hyundai has opened UK orders for the Ioniq 3 from £18,495 after the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant, with the entry 213-mile model undercutting the Renault 5 and Citroën ë-C3, while a 61 kWh version offers 308 miles for £21,995. Every version qualifies for the grant, and the significance is that Hyundai is bringing a 300-mile-plus EV into the low-£20,000s, increasing pressure on rivals to cut prices.

EV SALES SURGE 62% ACROSS 12 EUROPEAN MARKETS
Battery-electric sales across 12 major European markets rose 62% in September to a record 33% share, with France reaching 41.7%, Germany 34.5%, the Netherlands 53%, Belgium 51% and Sweden 49%, while year-to-date BEV sales climbed 42% to 2.3 million. The acceleration is unusually broad and appears to reflect several factors including cheaper EVs, higher fuel prices, LFP batteries, finance offers and incentives, although weaker markets such as Italy show Europe has not yet reached a uniform or irreversible tipping point.

CITROËN SHOWS ITS SUB-€15,000 ELECTRIC 2CV
Citroën has released the first images of its new electric 2CV ahead of an 11 October reveal, with the retro-inspired model expected to sit below the C3 and target a price under €15,000. More important than its nostalgic design is Citroën’s attempt to exploit proposed EU rules supporting small European-built EVs, making the car a test of whether Europe can produce genuinely affordable electric vehicles at scale.

ELECTRIFY AMERICA GIVES RETAILERS CONTROL OF FAST-CHARGING BRAND
Electrify America is expanding its Powered by Electrify America model, allowing retailers such as Wawa and Costco to control charging branding, prices and loyalty programmes while Electrify America operates the underlying infrastructure. The approach, already covering more than 100 stations and nearly 600 chargers, could accelerate US fast-charging growth by giving retailers the customer relationship without requiring them to build charging experti…

KIA EXPANDS GT RANGE WITH EV3 GT, EV4 GT AND EV5 GT
Kia is expanding its electric GT range with higher-powered, all-wheel-drive EV3, EV4 and EV5 variants priced from £48,695 to £54,295, adding adaptive chassis upgrades, performance tyres and, on the EV3 and EV4, simulated gears and synthetic engine sounds. The emphasis is entertainment rather than outright speed: rivals are quicker and sometimes cheaper, while Kia is using GT to make its mainstream EVs feel more engaging rather than simply chasing acceleration figures.

TESLA BEATS FORECASTS AS SALES STILL FALL
Tesla delivered 486,532 EVs in Q3 2026, comfortably beating analyst forecasts but still down 2.1% year on year, with Model 3 and Model Y deliveries slipping slightly and sales of its other vehicles falling 48%. Production rose while deliveries fell, although energy storage deployments grew 9.6% to 13.7 GWh, leaving Tesla’s 21 October results to answer the bigger question of whether its core automotive business can return to growth.

FORD AND GM EV SALES SLIDE AGAIN
Ford’s US EV sales fell 80.2% year on year in Q3 to 6,047 vehicles and GM’s dropped 61.7% to 25,473, partly reflecting last year’s rush to claim the expiring $7,500 tax credit but also representing declines from Q2 2026. Cadillac and the returning Chevrolet Bolt provided some bright spots, but EVs represented only 1.2% of Ford and 3.8% of GM sales, putting greater pressure on their coming generation of cheaper electric models to rebuild demand.

IONNA SAYS 10–20 MINUTE CHARGING IS ENOUGH

Ionna is building its US charging network around reliable 10–20 minute stops with 400 kW chargers, arguing that drivers already spend that long using bathrooms, buying food or taking a break and therefore do not need EV charging to match a five-minute petrol stop. Backed by major automakers but aiming to become commercially self-sustaining, Ionna plans to triple its 80-site network during 2026 through partners including Circle K, Wawa, Sheetz and Casey’s, betting that reliability, useful amenities and viable economics matter more in America than pursuing China-style megawatt charging.

UK BEVS SET A NEW MONTHLY RECORD

Britain registered a record 99,199 battery-electric cars in September, up 36.3% year on year and representing 28.3% of all new cars, while first-nine-month BEV registrations reached 454,945 and market share climbed from 20.2% to 26.2%. Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y led September’s BEV rankings, while plug-in hybrids also hit a record 17% share with 55.7% growth, although their environmental benefit depends much more heavily on owners actually charging them.

TESLA REGISTRATIONS RISE ACROSS FIVE EUROPEAN MARKETS

Tesla registrations rose in September across France, Sweden, Spain, Norway and Denmark, with France up 61.9%, while the Model Y became Ireland’s best-selling car for the month and Tesla’s January-August registrations across Europe had already risen 43.3%, slightly faster than the overall BEV market. The recovery now looks broader after two weak years, but comparisons against a poor 2025, Tesla’s reliance on the Model 3 and Model Y, stronger Chinese and European…

GASOLINE CARS LOSE THEIR GLOBAL MAJORITY

Pure petrol cars fell below half of global new-car sales for the first time in the first half of 2026, dropping 10% year on year to 20.25 million vehicles and a 49% market share. EVs reached 6.87 million sales and 17% share, so this is not an EV takeover but a milestone showing the global market fragmenting across battery-electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and other powertrains.

TESLA SUPERCHARGERS PASS 85,000 — AND GET BUSIER

Tesla’s Supercharger network has passed 85,000 stalls across more than 9,000 sites worldwide, while third-quarter charging sessions rose 29% year on year to 69 million and delivered around 2.4 TWh of electricity. Tesla is also introducing factory-assembled Supercharger designs to accelerate deployment, but rising utilisation suggests the network’s economics are increasingly being driven by how intensively existing chargers are used, not simply how many are installed.

TESLA'S CHEAPER MODEL 3 GAINS IN CANADA

Tesla’s Shanghai-built Model 3 is gaining sales in Canada after the country reopened limited imports of Chinese-made EVs under a 49,000-vehicle annual quota carrying a 6.1% tariff instead of the previous 100% surtax. Despite being ineligible for Canada’s federal EV incentive, the Model 3’s lower Chinese manufacturing costs have enabled aggressive pricing, potentially providing an early indication of how competitive Chinese-built EVs from Tesla and forthcoming brands such as BYD, Chery and Changan could be in North America.

RIVIAN DEMO DRIVES PASS 150,000 AFTER R2 LAUNCH
Rivian completed more than 150,000 demo drives through August, with activity accelerating sharply after R2 drives began on 9 June, while CEO RJ Scaringe says Launch Edition orders converted from reservations better than expected and the company is preparing a second production shift in Illinois. However, Rivian’s figures cover its entire range and marketing events, and without disclosed R2 production, deliveries or test-drive conversion rates, demo drives remain evidence of interest rather than confirmed sales demand.

MARY BARRA SAYS EVS REMAIN GM'S END GAME
GM CEO Mary Barra says EVs remain the company’s “end game” and “north star” despite cancelled electric-truck plans and weaker US EV sales, with electric vehicles still projected to represent roughly 40–50% of GM sales by 2030. GM is continuing to invest in batteries, software and charging while using combustion-vehicle profits to fund a transition Barra now expects to take decades rather than follow a fixed near-term deadline.

ELECTRIC TRUCKS LEAD IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026
IAA Transportation 2026 shows battery-electric trucks moving from demonstration projects towards mainstream freight, with new Volvo models, MAN trucks claiming up to 720 km of range and Mercedes eActros 600 customer vehicles already accumulating more than 160 million kilometres. The wider focus on megawatt charging, depot infrastructure and energy management shows that grid capacity and charging operations are increasingly as important to electric trucking as the vehicles themselves.

Geely is considering building its new Galaxy Cruiser 700 SUV at Ford’s Valencia factory from 2028 through their 66%-Ford, 34%-Geely joint venture, potentially reducing tariffs, logistics costs and reliance on importing complete vehicles from China. IONNA HITS 1,488 FAST-CHARGING PORTS Lees meer

Ionna has expanded to 1,488 fast-charging ports across 174 US stations, with ports up 50% and locations 74% in six months, while its Alpitronic hardware offers up to 400 kW charging, card readers and Plug and Charge support. The automaker-backed network has already ranked first in JD Power’s US charging-experience study, is offering discounts to owners of several major EV brands, and is targeting 30,000 charging bays by 2030.

KIA’S PV7 BRINGS 800-VOLT CHARGING TO ITS VAN RANGE

Kia’s larger PV7 electric van will arrive in South Korea and Europe in the second half of 2027 with 71.5 or 96.2 kWh batteries, more than 460 km provisional WLTP range and an 800-volt architecture capable of roughly 10–80% charging in 25 minutes. With up to 8.0 cubic metres of cargo space, 1,200 kg payload and eventually 23 variants, the PV7 extends Kia’s PBV strategy into a commercial class where charging downtime, payload and operating economics will determine its success.

KIA PV5 PASSES 50,000 GLOBAL SALES

Kia’s PV5 has passed 50,000 global sales just 13 months after launch, reaching 53,530 units by the end of July with around 60% sold outside South Korea. It was Kia’s third-best-selling EV during the first seven months of the year, giving the company meaningful evidence that its dedicated electric-commercial-vehicle platform has enough demand to support expansion into models such as the larger PV7.

LEAPMOTOR B03X STARTS AT €24,900 IN EUROPE

Leapmotor will open European orders for the B03X in July from €24,900, with a 39.8 kWh version offering up to 292 km WLTP and a 53.0 kWh model reaching 382 km. Both claim 30–80% charging in 16 minutes, while generous storage and extensive standard technology make the B03X a potentially strong value proposition if those specifications and prices survive localisation across European markets.
