We are not in control or in charge of anyone no matter how beloved they are to us. We feel we are responsible for them. Imagine then the responsibility of Prophet ﷺ towards his Ummah and how concerned he was towards us. but Allah reminds him that his only job is to remind the Ummah time and time again about the message of Islam.

Our environment around us need not necessarily dictate our outcome of us being good or bad. It is Allah who decides what is going to be our outcome. We may be good or bad depending on whether we want to be under Allah’s guidance or not.

The Prophet ﷺ was most compassionate, loving, kind and caring. Yet, when he is advising people on the path of truth, he faced a lot of criticism simply because the truth hurts. It becomes truly uncomfortable. But we should firmly believe that nobody can truly commit to the truth unless one is a firm believer. We have to be tolerant and perseverent or exercise Sabr once we are on the path of truth because it is a hard path to tread upon.

How do we contemplate the truth? By simply turning to the Qur'an and being an ardent student of Islam.

These particular set of ayahs starts with knowledge and ends with extreme emotions. This is because these two opposite things are crucial to us.

This can be elucidated by saying that if one has a lot of knowledge but if he is not able to control his emotions, then that knowledge means nothing and even if we have a little bit of knowledge but we are able to control our emotions and are able to hold back and be able to acknowledge our incomplete information, then we are of the intelligent people who are also able to refrain from passing judgment.

When he was delivering the message of Islam in Mecca, he was tortured, humiliated, ridiculed and made miserable by the political bigwigs and super influential people of Mecca.

In Surah Al 'Araaf, Allah says He is always present and is the constant Companion and Protector of Prophet ﷺ no matter the situation and also no matter the people surrounding the Prophet ﷺ to threaten him.

Another important facet that we need to ponder on is that the minute we start looking at protection from things, we begin to lose our connection from the idea that Allah Himself is the One who protects us from everything. We also have this wrong belief that if harm comes from unseen beings, then magic has been done on me.

Listen intently as Ustadh dissects this herd mentality as an aftermath of imbibing various things from other religions and also find out the practical approach one should have towards it.

An extreme case of overwhelming fear and sadness depicted in the history of Islam is that of the mother of Musa AS. this story is described at length for us to fully fathom the emotions of fear and sadness and what is the stance of a believer in the wake of this extreme adversity.

Say, "Each works according to his manner, but your Lord is most knowing of who is best guided in the way. And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And mankind has not been given of knowledge except a little."

Allah says in the Qur'an that when He bestows His blessings on man, we turn a blind eye to them. Man is not grateful for the blessings that came his way when he was in need of them and for which he had prayed to Allah. He alienates himself from Allah and becomes the embodiment of arrogance and egotism. But when calamities and trials begin to resurface, he loses his patience and becomes desperate and again turns to Allah for help.

The Lord is observant of the state of everyone and knows which path is better and which mode of guidance will prove more fruitful. the reality of the ‘spirit’ or the Ruh is beyond the comprehension of mankind and it is that which lies as one of the innumerable secrets of Allah SWT. The knowledge and understanding of mankind are trivial, limited and very minimal when attempted to compare with Allah SWT.

The power of words is the quintessential power bestowed upon man and is a gift from Allah. When we speak, we communicate with Allah and hence, we should be vigilant on how we use them in our daily lives.

The word Saddah means filling a hole or a gap. Regarding speech, Sadd “سد” in Arabic means to fill in something. Our conversations should be such that it doesn’t create any further problems, if some already exist, rather fill that void. one should be thoughtful of his tone/voice/statements.

‘Sud’ also means a dam that separates and mountain (a reference to Surah Yasin and Kahf) it encourages us to speak with knowledge or don’t speak anything. We should only speak if we have something positive to contribute to a conversation. We should also take care to speak straight/clearly so listeners can tell where it began and where it ended, unlike tangled cables or ropes where no one can tell where starts and where it ends. Say what you want others to hear, thus, leaving no room for ambiguity. Lastly, we should speak with “purpose”.

Shaytan is angry at being admonished for being arrogant to Allah and swears that he will make mankind even more arrogant than him and even ungrateful. so, arrogance is a lack of manifestation of gratitude. Shaytan comes from four directions at us and he wants to prove our ingratitude from our hearts and diminish our optimistic relation with Allah. Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan elaborates on how Satan attacks us from the left side. Lees meer

The basic idea that is postulated by the scholars is that right is associated with the good and left is for that which is bad which means it makes us lazy, delaying doing good things, etc. What keeps us connected to Allah is the acts of worship, remembrance of Allah, our desire to seek forgiveness from Allah for our sins.

Shaytan attacks from the left by:

Removing your motivation to engage in beneficial acts by slowing your ability to do good things. This way he has room to fill up your heart with bad things.
Eliminating the remembrance of Allah from your life so that you are not alarmed in Haram situations and to then fill your heart with despair.
By beautifying sins for you and pulling you towards his direction (the left). Ultimately deviating you from the path of Allah.
To convince us that you have no respect, that you are filthy and invaluable in the eyes of Allah.
Greed and Wanting more than just the blessings of Allah.
Once he gets you evolved in sin, he’ll keep you thereby convincing you that you need it.

In his previous talk the venerated Sheikh talked about how the syaitan attacks us from the front. In this talk he tells us how the syaitan attacks us from the back.

One of the easiest ways syaitan achieves this is by his whispers. We may think that it's our thoughts emanating from us but the reality is it's coming from the accursed one, the one that promised Al Khaliq he would lead the children of Adam astray from every angle.

One of the things that syaitan wants us to be is in the same of constant doubt, always asking ourselves 'why did this happen to me?’. He plays a psychological game with humans. If we are obsessed with the our past acts, we cannot go forward to better ourselves. Syaitan wants you to remain in that state of hopelessness that syaitan himself is in.

These difficult times you went through are not proof that Allah hates you, doesn't care about you, does not love you. This is not the case because some of the best persons that ever lived went through extremely trying times. Our beloved prophet himself lost his parents as a child, moved from home to home, lost his children, lost his wife, whose cause led his tribe to suffer for almost three years. So you are not alone in your suffering.

This is why the content of this talk is crucial to us. It gives us the inside information of Syaitan's weapons of attack. So take some time today to listen to this short but supremely important talk.

  21. When The Devil Attacks Head On

Khutbah by Nouman Ali Khan Lees meer

Our beloved Sheikh in this khutbah talks about one of the attacks of Iblis stated in Surah 7.

Iblis here swore he will absolutely come at us from in front of us and behind us.

Which basically means he's attacking head on- literally in front of us, the literal meaning being iblis will use things directly in front of us against us. Eg: whatever you want to look at is physically in front of the screens of iPhone, laptop screen etc. Iblis doesn't want us to think of the consequences of our action. He whispers to us that consequences don't matter.

The second prong of this frontal attack is when iblis directs our focus by whispering about the physical elements of life - obsessing us with things that we can see - that branded outfit or the house in that particular neighborhood.

In Surah An-Nas - the Quran says “iblis whispers into the chest” which carries the meaning that Iblis uses the emotions in our chest and manipulates them to work against our aqidah, our deen. He'll use our anger to mess us up; use our happiness to mess us up. Devil whispers - “I won't give you what you want but something lesser but I'll give it to you now”.

He attacks you from right in front of you and blinds you. Syaitan blocks your view ahead of your meeting with Allah using that latest car, that awesome holiday.

To achieve the vision you have for your future you need direction, you need a goal. Iblis wants you to not have goals. Iblis makes the future invisible by blinding your view with his frontal materialistic attack.

The Devil fills us with pessimism so we will let go of our expectations of Allah that which is the essential aspect of our relationship with Allah. Iblis wants to take material things and convert it to our goals, so we're immersed and obsessed with those things and thus we lose sight of our goals.

And his next frontal attack is his attack on Time. He makes us believe we have Time to achieve our goals. He wants us to have no expect for our time…

Alhamdulillah, there are so many things to be grateful for.

Insha Allah, with the constant remembrance of Allah we will be able to defeat the devil. May Allah protect us from his whispers and make us among those for whom Allah has chosen this path to be easy. Aameen.

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delivers an amazing lecture that deals with the Devil’s obsession with comparison. Lees meer

    Lessons from this lecture:

Iblees said that he is better than Adam (AS) since he is made from fire and Adam (AS) from clay, which led to Shirk. As it is Allah who decides who is better than anyone among us and we don't have any basis of comparison.
Don't compare yourself with anyone in this dunya as this is not your job to do, your sustenance is in Allah's hands and you won't get anything more or less as what is decided.
Comparing in materialistic items as those of clothes, income, cars, home, etc will lead to arrogance which will lead to jealousy and thus this is what Iblees wants from all of us to fight and holds grudges among ourselves.
You are not superior when compared with anyone else.
If Allah gave you knowledge, fame, money, power, etc, don't consider it as a sign that Allah loves you more than anyone else.
If you have thoughts like "Why someone else is happy", "Why he earns more than me", "How can he be successful and I am not", then seek refuge from shaytan and read and recite Surah Al-Falaq and ask Allah for help.

May Allah protect us from jealousy and hasad and ask for the success for all people in this dunya and akhirah as well.

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delves in elaborate detail on Surah Araf verse 11. Lees meer

Iblees's status was elevated more than the angels because of how much effort and work Iblis put in. Iblis and all the angels were commanded to bow down to the creation of Adam. However, Iblis objected and said - "What's so awesome about him? I'm created from fire and Allah created him from clay "You didn't have everyone bow for me?" Allah exposed Iblis's motive of worshiping Allah all along which was only for recognition and not to please Allah.

A point of interest is that though both Adam and Iblis disobeyed Allah, Iblis tried to justify it, while Adam didn't try to justify it. The first human being that could've asked that question is Adam, but yet he didn't, in humility. Whereas Iblis tried to offer a logical excuse. Adam's response was humility, he was embarrassed that no matter how logical I think I am, I can't be more logical than Allah and when I make a mistake I will take ownership instead of blaming Allah.

Prophet ﷺ said that all children of Adam make mistakes.but the believers own up to the mistakes and repent. The Prophet ﷺ also said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, if you did not commit sin, Allah would replace you with people who would commit sin then pray for forgiveness." Prophet ﷺ says " Every son of Adam sins and the best of those who sin are those who repent."

So we just have to learn to deal with these situations and develop the guidance and the strength to be able to cope with them in a healthy way. We should cultivate the ability to extract guidance correctly from the Noble Book and to live by that guidance. Thus, we hope to get the reward for the patience that we showed towards one another and forgive the mistakes that we make, especially those towards Allah and those towards each other.

But our beloved Sheikh brings this element of power back to us in this khutbah. The power to move from point A to point B, the power to hold a pen between our fingers and the power to choose the right person to rule a natuon.

Surah Al Imran verse 26 addresses this element and our beloved Sheikh breaks it down for us to understand and comprehend.

It is necessary to know the levels that exist within power - power over a dominion coupled with 'izza i.e. respect and authority like our beloved prophet s.a.w. and Sulayman a.s., power only without 'izza like the pharoah and nimrud, respect and authority without power like Yusuf a.s. and Ibrahim a.s.

Therefore it is necessary for us to educate ourselves with the extent of power and its relevance to us and thereafter to bear in mind that all Power, the Giver of power, the Owner of Power is Allah the Creator of Power.
