The forgiveness of Allah cannot be matched or even be compared to the forgiveness of humans. Why do we indulge in Ghill? It is because we cannot let go of the depth of the problem and hence, do not want to let our guard down and be exposed to another attack. This baggage that we carry with us may make us bitter people which is not a pleasant scenario.

What is the solution to this predicament? How do we get rid of the ill feelings and grudges that we harbor in our lives endlessly? Listen intently to get enlightened so that we are the dwellers of Paradise.

Who are we to judge the sinners and carry on labeling them all of our life? This is all the more true when they have repented to Allah. The truth of the matter is that we are human beings, we are weak and we are sinners and most importantly we seek the Almighty’s constant Astaghfar.

It is our ultimate duty to turn to Allah with sincere repentance as we will have no excuse or escape without turning into sincere repentance. With our mere excuses and manipulations, we are in reality only cheating ourselves and everyone else, not Allah. We are so weak emotionally, spiritually, psychologically and with that Tawbah, we hope to better ourselves for Allah.

We should pray to Allah that He gives us the strength to make sincere tawbah at any cost. May Allah accept our repentance and forgive us for our misdeeds, Aameen.

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan centers his lecture around the 135th Ayah of Surah Al Nisa that deals with the subject of justice. One of the fruits that grow from the perfection of Iman is justice.
‘O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.”
Dealing with family can be really testing especially when we are shut down every time we speak up. Speaking the truth should not be a slave of seniority and stature. The truth is the truth no matter how bitter it is and how unpleasant it may be.

Justice in Islam, doing your best to avoid injustice, testifying for the love of Allah, sacrifice your feelings for what is right. These are acts that are hard to follow if one is attached incessantly to this dunya. Once we are sure that we want to be on the road to Akhirah and that the reward is Jannah, justice will be easy to handle . It helps us focus on what's wrong and stand up for justice.

We find that disbelievers are mentioned throughout the Qur'an but one among them who is the closest to Shaytan in terms of evil is Firaun. He is a special phenomenon that is mentioned repeatedly in the Qur'an. His heinous crimes were against Allah and humanity.

The meaning of the word - Estakhfaaf - is elaborated upon explicitly and how it is important in the context of the atrocities meted out by Firaun on his people so much so that they failed to retaliate in any manner even though their baby boys were being slaughtered in front of their eyes.

The focus of this talk is to delve within ourselves and fathom whether or not we have something of Firaun inside us and how we should be careful if we have such traits within us.

It is the most blessed Ayah in the Qur'an because of the content, subject, and style of the verses. It is about the Names, Grandeur, and Majesty of Allah SWT. When should this magnificent Ayah be recited?

If recited after every single Salah, we have been promised Jannah.
When we wake up in the morning and in the evening for protection from Shaytan.

Ubayy bin Ka’ab (RA) stated: Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: “O Abu al-Mundhir, do you know the verse from the Book of Allah which, according to you, is the greatest?” I said: “Allah and His Apostle ﷺ know best.” He again said: “Abu al-Mundhir, do you know the verse from the Book of Allah which, according to you, is the greatest?” I said: “Allah, there is no god but He, the Living, the Eternal.” Thereupon he struck me on my chest and said: “May knowledge be pleasant for you, O Abu al-Mundhir!”

The translation of Ayat Ul Kursi is as follows:
Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Alive, the Eternal. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. Unto Him belongs whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. Who is he that intercedes with Him except by His leave? He knows that which is in front of them and that which is behind them, while they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He will. His throne includes the heavens and the earth, and He is never weary of preserving them. He is the Sublime, the Tremendous.
He then analyses each verse one by one for a beautiful Tafseer:

“Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Alive, the Eternal." - This statement means that there is no god but Allah, and He is the Supreme Lord of all creations. Also, there is absolutely nothing worth worshipping, except Him. The Alive, the Eternal means t…

The secret of our striving in this life is to find out what our Rabb wants from us at every moment and stage of our lives and then do it to the best of our ability. Similarly, we should work towards in an identical manner for all people.

The first thing to do is have a proper attitude in the light of Deen and to understand ourselves. Allah created man in the best of forms, pleasing in appearance, and endowed with abilities, qualities, and intellect which indicates that they have been endowed to us with a valid reason and hence, we should use them wisely.

We must also build character which encompasses no lying, no cheating, using polite language, humility, respect for elders, and sensitivity to humans, animals, plants – i.e., all living beings.

Attributes like pride in terms of lineage or the power, position, wealth, status, etc. that the world offers on a platter is definitely not acceptable.

Whoever suffered an affliction, should acknowledge that it occurred by Allah’s wisdom and decree, and then should patiently await Allah’s reward – Allah will guide his heart and will compensate him for his loss in this life by granting him certainty in faith.

When Allah has made us the recipient of dignity in this life, we also need to pass this on to other people so that we duly thank Allah in this way. Shaytan hates that Allah has ordained dignity for us and hence, it's His continuous motive to annihilate the dignity of others by making us do these acts.

Our parents and children are worthy of our dignity and it is essential that we imbibe and inculcate those values that enable us to enhance their dignity.

In this life, the fact that the law is served doesn't necessarily mean that justice is served. But the situation is completely different on Judgment Day, as Allah describes it using beautifully nuanced language in the first part of Surah Al-A’raf. On that day when we stand humbly before our maker, the scales reveal the absolute truth about our deeds. It is an accurate, precise and justified reckoning. The scales do not measure the quantity of our deeds, but their quality, as each one of us has a unique set of standards that assess the meaning and impact of our actions. This is why we must not compare ourselves to others and why we must always have absolute faith that Allah will never burden us with difficulties that we cannot handle.

Referring to the Israelites in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah stresses that like them, we are in real danger that our hearts will harden even though the Quran is in our hands and we recite it in prayer. In the same surah, Allah teaches us how to protect our hearts from this, first by maintaining a deep connection with our creator, which in turn will improve our relationships with close family; then by always speaking well of people, followed by establishing the prayer and finally giving zakat. Salat is the means by which our worship of Allah and goodness to others is reinforced. The consequences of a hardened heart are grave, leading to a strong warning from Allah in ayah 85 against those who believe in some parts of His book and choose to deny or ignore others, if it doesn't serve their interests. The compensation for such extremists on both sides (those obsessed with the superficial aspects of religion or those who fail to observe even the most basic rites) is humiliation in this life and the worst of jahannam in the afterlife. Such behavior damages the Ummah at large because it makes Islam itself appear contradictory.

In ayah 36 of Surah Al-Isra Allah warns against obsessively following what we do not know fully. On the Day of Judgment, we will be held accountable for what we hear, see and become impassioned about. Hearing something constantly not only influences our perception of it, but also informs our emotions towards it. That is why having a regular relationship with the Quran is essential. Our views and feelings become aligned with what Allah teaches us through His blessed words. The story of Prophet Musa (PBUH) and Al-Khidr in Surah Al-Kahf is a source of profound guidance for situations many of us find ourselves facing in our daily lives. It begins with Prophet Musa’s (PBUH) relentless commitment to learning despite the fact that Allah had bestowed so much knowledge on him that his disciples were even called the People of the Book. Although Allah spoke directly to Prophet Musa (PBUH), He decided that these particular lessons will not be prescribed. They must be experienced. In their journey, Prophet Musa (PBUH) watches impatiently as the wise man, Al-Khidr, damages a ship, kills a child and builds a wall without asking for compensation. His actions shock Prophet Musa (PBUH) until Al-Khidr explains Allah’s merciful design. No matter how difficult our trials are in this world, we must have faith that Allah’s plan is always for the best.

He explains how our correct understanding of the life and character of Dawoud (AS) was tarnished by a false interpretation of this incident in the Hebrew scripture, and that a careful study reveals that Allah sent these ayat to refute the false accusations they made against him regarding his alleged scheme to take the wife of one of his military commanders. Allah reveals that the true story of Dawoud is that he was a deeply faithful prophet who always humbled himself to Allah and, despite his great power, kept going back to Allah in repentance. The moral of his encounter with the two conflicting brothers in this parable is that if we are ever in a position to arbitrate between two people, we must always listen carefully to both sides and never allow our whims to effect our judgment. After escaping the clutches of Pharaoh, Prophet Musa (PBUH) and his people found themselves in the middle of the desert with no food, shelter, or hope for survival. It was at this point that Allah chose to remind them about gratitude.

What we learn from this passage from Surah Ibrahim is that, when we are faced with insurmountable challenges and odds, we must recognize that it is only with Allah's help that we can be successful. If we are able to rise to this higher level of faith and only think of reasons why we should be grateful to Allah, especially at a time when our mind is being invaded by worries and negativity, then Allah has definitely promised that He will increase every possible avenue for good around us.

With this divine guidance and formula from the Quran, may we all find solace during our difficulties, peace during turmoil, and success during hardships. Ameen.

If someone is deprived of His assistance and support, no one will be able to help him. If He deprives someone of sustenance, no one will be able to sustain him.

Those who lead their lives while remaining a slave to their desires will never reach the real goal. This will be achieved by only those who remain on the right path. The Almighty has endowed people with the faculties of sight, hearing, and reasoning so that people can remain on the right path by using them. But very few people understand the worth of such favors.

The nearest of the seven skies has been adorned with stars by Allah referenced as bright lamps wherein they serve the dual purpose of guiding people in their journeys and pelting Satan and his army if they try to overhear something.

The power and sustenance of the Almighty is so evident in this universe that it bears evidence that those who deny the Day of Reward and Punishment will have to face the torment of Hell. Whenever a group of these rebellious people will be flung in hell, its gate-keepers will ask them whether a warner had ever warned them of this punishment. They would admit that a warner did come to them but they rejected him and had replied that the Almighty had revealed nothing and that whoever believes that the Almighty has revealed anything have, in fact, deviated from the right path. They would also confess that they had never tried to listen to and understand what had been said to them, otherwise they would not have met this fate.

It is actually that Surah about which multiple narrations are being made by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ via Ahadith and thus, ensuring that we are majorly connected to this Surah.

The Surah is broken into 6 parts: the second portion is the longest and there is more talk of HellFire and less about Jannah in this Surah. Thus, it is more focused on the disbelievers. Atheists talk about the creation of the universe, contradicting the basic laws of thermodynamics, evolution and they can rationalize their thinking while making baseless theories to convince them that they found differences and gaps in God's creations, but in vain.

Close scrutiny of the universe reveals that Allah is the Most Powerful and the Most Blessed. He has created this world with a purpose- as a trial and test for man as to who adopts the right path and who the wrong one. A necessary outcome of this trial is that a Day will come wherein the righteous be rewarded and the misguided and the wrongdoers will be punished.

    Surah Al-Bayyinah Lees meer

In this talk Ustadh Nouman focuses on the first two ayat of Surah Al-Bayyinah, which he says have been the subject of many different interpretations. Here, he delves into the meanings of two key words: "munfakkeen", which denotes "getting separated", and "al-bayyinah" (The Quran) which means "that which provides clear evidence." In his interpretation, Ustadh concludes that these ayat refer to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself, and how his credibility in his community and his honesty, combined with the delivery of this purified scripture, transformed Mecca (and the world) separating those who are truly and genuinely faithful, from those who disbelieve. This separation took place in this world and will continue in the afterlife.

Surah Al-Qadr is entirely dedicated to Laylatul Qadr, the most noble of nights during the month of Ramadan when the Quran was first revealed. In this video, Ustadh Nouman teaches us the nuances of the phrase “laylatul qadr” in Arabic, which combines the meanings of night of “decree”, “honor” and “power”. This is the night when Allah will decree that the angels execute all His decisions for the rest of the year; when Allah revealed the most honorable words through His most honored angel to His most honored messenger. Finally it is a night endowed with unusual power; a night when all our sincere duaa will be accepted. It is the ultimate night of peace and prayer; one we must take advantage of as the blessed month of Ramadan comes to a close. But above all else, Laylatul Qadr is a celebration of the Quran. In his introductory comments to a more detailed interpretation of Surah Al-Alaq, Ustadh Nouman stresses the importance of understanding the context in which its ayat were revealed. Here Ustadh reads and explains the narration - verified in Sahih Al-Bukhari - which details Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) very first encounter with Jibreel (AS). He recounts how the Angel asked him to read three times, each time holding him very tight. Terrified and unsure of his own sanity, the Prophet rushes home to his wife Khadija, who, in a beautiful part of this narration, lists all the formidable qualities of the Prophet, assuring him that god will never let him down because of his excellent character and how thoughtful and caring he is to other people.

    Surah At-Tin Lees meer

In this talk Ustadh Nouman focuses on Ayat 4-6 of Surah At-Tin. These ayat follow the opening oaths where Allah reminds us of Prophets Eissa, Musa and Muhammad (PBUH) and by association of the messages they carried. In this transition to the heart of the surah, Allah makes a strong statement about how He created man in the most upright fashion, balancing him both physically and spiritually. Those amazing messengers who's memory was evoked in the opening ayat, are proof that human beings can be sublime; but then the tragedy is that they have allowed themselves to be reduced to the lowest of the low by rejecting Allah's message. Yet again Allah offers hope to those who pull themselves out of the depths of darkness and, guided by Him, correct the wrongs of the past and do everything necessary to fulfil the conditions of their iman.

In this talk Ustadh Nouman teaches us that Surah Ash-Sharh is one of only four surahs in the Quran that address Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) exclusively. Here Allah consoles His beloved messenger by reminding him that He has elevated his mention within the heavens. The consoling words of Allah in the central ayat of the surah are a message of hope to the Prophet, and by extension to all believers who live their lives in the path of Allah. Allah reiterates that within difficulty there is ease. In fact it is only through trials and toil that we can taste the sweetness of ease and contentment both in this world and in the afterlife.

Explaining the context of Surah Ad-Duhaa, Ustadh Nouman says that according to several narrations, the surah came down at a moment of sadness in Prophet Muhammad's life when no Quran was revealed to him for a few days. When the Prophet starts doubting himself and getting anxious, Allah gave him a beautiful consolation, telling him that he was wrong, that He has not abandoned him and promising him that he will reach the end of his mission and witness its results. These ayat, says Ustadh, are also a message of hope to us. They teach us that sometimes we will experience gaps in our connection with Allah, but that we can always come back.

Following the opening three oaths that compare night and day to the attributes of men and women in Surah Al-Layl, Allah transitions to the central theme of the surah. Ustadh Nouman teaches us that here Allah is saying that our efforts in this world will go in many different directions, some right and some wrong. The order of the verbs Allah uses to describe those on the correct path sums up the moral view of the Quran: If you give, are conscious of Allah and accept the ultimate beauty (al-hunsa) through an unhesitating submission to the truth itself, Allah will surely guide you along the path to janna.

We have this common belief that when we make duaa, Allah will immediately solve our problem, otherwise He is not happy with us. In this khutbah, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan teaches us that this can’t be further from the truth.

A simple look at the trials of all the messengers of Allah will prove it: Prophet Nuh made daawa for 950 years, but those closest to him never followed; Prophet Muhammad made duaa for his uncle, but Abu Lahab continued to fight him; and Prophet Yacoub cried so much over the loss of his son Youssef that he lost his eyesight.

The story of Maryam is another inspiring example. She was in such shock when the angel told her that she will have a child – to her this was the worst punishment – that she prayed to Allah that she would rather die than face humiliation in her community. As it turns out, the child who caused all that grief, Prophet Esa (AS), was the reason she is being honoured until today, hundreds of years later.

In this talk, Ustadh Nouman offers deep insight into an oath Allah makes in ayat 7-8 of Surah Ash-Shams. Here Allah swears by the human nafs, the self, that He created in perfect proportions. Ustadh explains how it is this nafs that Allah inspired within every human being which distinguishes us from other creatures, and that He has given it the capacity to both destroy or protect and save itself. In the context of the previous oaths comparing night and day, these powerful ayat are a metaphor for the tug-of-war between good and evil, light and darkness within ourselves; between our material and spiritual needs. Allah has created this cycle so we can navigate the trials of life, knowing that like the moon, our hearts too go through phases. This constant struggle to purify our souls is the natural order of things.

Ustadh Nouman explains the heart of Surah Al-Balad. Here Allah asks a rhetorical question to the disbelievers of Quraish in Mecca who have shamelessly violated Allah’s sacred land and His messenger Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Can you not see the truth, Allah asks, challenging them to come up with language to match the Quran. Just as He guides the newborn to its mother’s milk, Allah has endowed us with the capacity to choose the right path, but often people refuse to take the difficult road that will ultimately lead to eternal comfort.

The last four ayat of Surah Al-Fajr are arguably some of the most beautiful in the entire Quran. In this talk Ustadh Nouman explains the meaning of the "tranquil" spirit that Allah has honored and has asked to return to Him on the Day of Resurrection. This section is also connected with the surah's opening ayat through its reference to Hajj. The opening oaths of Surah Al-Fajr have been the subject of over 30 different interpretations. In this video, Ustadh Nouman outlines some of them, but focuses primarily on the one he believes is the most compelling; that these ayat are a reference to the Hajj. Here, he says, Allah evokes the spirit of the Hajj, that momentous occasion when we leave everything behind - money, status, ego - to stand before Allah, materially and spiritually naked. The day of nahr (sacrifice) is the culmination of 10 days of struggle performing the Hajj rituals, and marks the moment when we are cleansed of all our sins, ready to start a new life on the path of Allah.
