Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan ponders on what Allah wants from us and what we should be doing in this life to earn rewards in the HereAfter. Lees meer

Allah is actually telling us to invest in ourselves not just in terms of the Akhirah which is obvious but even in terms of dunya. There are things we need to improve about ourself and we will see the gains of that later on in life. One should never underestimate the good that people do in a community and the good that one is capable of and Allah has sent down upon us huge mercy in the fact that the good that one is capable of cannot be the good that someone else can be capable of. The opportunities that Allah gave you may not have been given to me and the opportunities Allah may not have been given to you. Every one of us has a different set of opportunities a different set of challenges and we have to make the most out of whatever life Allah has given us.

Allah is watching carefully and Allah has full view especially of what we Muslims do despite the fact that we are embroiled in our obsession with the lives of others while completely neglecting our own shortcomings.

In this talk, Ustadh Nouman explains the heart of Surah Al-Ghashiyah where Allah urges disbelievers to contemplate the world around them with humility. It is as if Allah is telling us to take advantage of the journey we are still on in this world because only then can we be prepared for the life that is coming. Allah then addresses Prophet Muhammad, telling him that since Allah has given every human the capacity to arrive at the truth on his own, his sole responsibility is to keep on reminding people.

In this talk, Ustadh Nouman explains Ayah 8 of Surah Al-A’la. Here Allah promises Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) to make things easy for him and give him the power to withstand the difficulties ahead. The beauty of this ayah stems from the context in which it was revealed in the early years of the da’wa. When Muslims were being persecuted harshly by Quraish, the ayah was a premonition of pending relief. The universal message Allah is sending us, is that we will continue to face difficulties in life but that through our imaan, He will give us the ability to deal with them.

In this khutbah Nouman Ali Khan focuses on the last ayah of Surah Al-Hajj, where Allah asks us to struggle in a way that is worthy of Him. Even though this seems impossible, Allah makes it easier for us with a reminder that each one of us was carefully chosen to be Muslim because we are capable of things that we are not even aware of.

We learn from the legacy of Ibrahim (AS) that whatever difficulties we face, Allah will make them easy the way He has eased the hardships of Ibrahim, the one prophet whose trials are unparalleled.

As Muslims today, we have become a target, but Allah has chosen us specifically because we are best qualified to withstand these hardships. That is our purpose and the more sincere we are in our struggle for Allah, the more He will ease our burdens.

But even though Allah dismissed Adam from janna, He promised to give him a way back up through repeated guidance. Allah promised those who follow this guidance that they will know no fear or sadness in this life. The last time this promise was fulfilled was when Allah sent his final message, the Quran. In Ramadan Allah revealed his extended rope from the sky to the earth to teach us that there is hope, no matter how lost we feel or how far we have fallen. Ramadan is the opportunity Allah gave us to celebrate our connection with Him.

The power of duaa can't be overstated. The profound supplication Musa (AS) made at one of the weakest moments of his life is an inspiring example of this, as Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan reminds us in this khutbah.

After growing up in Pharaoh’s court, Musa suddenly finds himself a fugitive from the law and roams the desert until he reaches Madian. Desperate, he asks his creator for help and vows to take anything He provides. But that's not all. He also hopes for forgiveness for the sin he committed by doing as much good as he can in the world. At that very moment the entire course of his life changes.

The lesson learnt is that we must understand the way duaa works and know that the sincerity of our duaa is measured according to how far we accept what Allah provides with gratitude, no matter how little it seems, and to always help others more desperate than us.

One of the most misunderstood ayat of the Quran is in Surah An-Nisaa. This is a classic example of how a passage, taken out of context leads to false claims against the word of Allah. In this khutbah, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan stresses that we can't read aya 34 without considering what came before and after it. He teaches us that the idea of a man's ‘qawama’ over a woman has nothing to do with authority and everything to do with being a constant caretaker and supporter of women. We only need to look at the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and how he treated his wives to learn that hitting was never a part of it. Lees meer

Nouman Ali Khan stresses that it is imperative in this day and age for parents to realise that the world their children live in today is completely different from theirs when they were growing up. Young people must have the freedom to meet in a dignified manner and parents must open the doors to what is halal when their children are ready for marriage because if they don’t they are, in fact, flinging the doors to the impermissible wide open. in this life sometimes we make a plan on what we want to accomplish in a given period of time and we set goals for ourselves and we strive towards those goals. But we must realize that all of that means nothing if we are not building our Akhirah (The Day of Judgment). All of those plans are worthless and meaningless and are not any kind of accomplishment at all if this is not building us towards Allah and not making me a slave of Allah.

There are people’s perceptions of us and then there is the reality. People’s perception might be you are worth nothing. It stands to benefit you nothing before Allah. It will not add to our deeds. It won’t take away from them. People’s criticisms will not take away from us, and people’s praise will not add to us. We have Allah’s word, so we can see ourselves in light of Allah’s words, and that will help us see ourselves for who we really, truly are. We treasure all of our relationships so long as they are something that is building us towards the Akhirah (The Day of Judgment). We must constantly pray to Allah that He makes the Book of Allah a mirror through which we can see the truth of who we are and [we] constantly seek to improve ourselves.

His counter message was that Musa and his brother Harun were magicians who wanted to drive you out of your land and that you must defend our way of life because it is the best and doesn’t need any improvement. In short he sold the people an artificial patriotism that only benefitted him and his small clique. Yet despite the odds and despite his fear, Musa confronts Pharaoh and overcomes him. Quranic examples of parent-child relationships shed light on many issues that plight Muslim families all over the world today, says Nouman Ali Khan. While the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), whose father built idols that he destroyed, reminds us that imaan is not only influenced by the environment in which we are raised, that of Nuh (AS) and his son teaches us that even if you are a Prophet, you may end up with a child who refuses to accept Allah’s message. Although we have a responsibility towards our children, we have no control over the results. Allah has endowed all human beings with the ability to think for themselves which means that once your child reaches adulthood, he/she will have to make their own choices. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) famously told his daughter Fahemah that she should fear Allah because she will have to stand before Him at her own merits, for even he cannot intervene on her behalf. Risking our spiritual and emotional relationship with our children can be avoided if we take a cue from Luqman (AS) who waited for the right circumstances to lecture his son about religion. And to sons and daughters, beware because the crimes you commit against your parents will only lead to perpetual loss and agony both in this life and the next. Lees meer

We should be the first one to point out what is wrong with ourselves and constantly keep coming back to Allah. So we recognize our mistakes and that we ask Allah to cover our mistakes.

It’s part of the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and part of the tradition, where different ahadith have mentioned reading either part of Surah Kahf, or all of it, before the Friday prayer (Jum’ah). Of the various instructions and teachings of the Prophet ﷺ, is the idea that this Surah has to do with protecting us from the Fitna of Dajjal. So it has something to do with protecting us from future troubles and difficulties.

In the very beginning of this Surah, Allah offers a really interesting warning, after describing the greatness of the Qur'an. What is that warning?

Allah goes on to tell His Messenger ﷺ that - “Is it a possibility that you will worry so much that it will destroy yourself, thinking about their consequences.” And the Prophet ﷺ is so worried about these consequences that Allah is telling him that he is worrying so much that he will almost kill himself out of grief.

Allah says at the beginning of this surah, ‘All praise and gratitude belong to Allah that sent upon His slave the ultimate/final book. And He didn’t leave any crookedness/deviation/room for criticism or attack in this book.’ an elaborate explanation for the same is also shared and makes for quite an interesting listen.

Quran itself is a conversation between Allah and every person. And that’s the first step in us fixing ourselves as an Ummah – to once again engage Allah in a perfect conversation, to become more connected with Allah, especially in our Salah. The Quran is not just a book about Haram and Halal; it’s not just about Jahannam and Jannah. No scholar, no Imam is going to talk about the Quran so as to give us the beauty when Allah himself says something. When Allah says it, it has a different effect.

These kinds of inciting attacks are of two types - physical, military kind of attack or psychological, ideological attacks. The psychological, ideological attacks were predominant at the time of Allah’s Messenger ﷺ.

The Quran that was supposed to be in the chest of the believers has gone from these chests and we don’t remember the Quran with our hearts. We ourselves have to increase the dignity of the Quran. Thus, when we look at these acts of ignorance, we need to be collected and calm and we need to understand that what they are doing is an exercise in futility. The Ustadh tells us that ee shouldn’t be surprised or hurt by these actions. Allah Himself says: “But if you persevere patiently and become Al-Muttaqun then verily that will be a determining factor in all affairs.”

And if we are able to be patient, controlling our emotions, holding ourselves back and continuing to fear Allah, then this is of the most noble deeds one can do. Our patience speaks volumes but our yelling and screaming is more detrimental. After we are patient what are we supposed to do? We are supposed to be patient. Another example cited is that of our beloved Prophet ﷺ and how a particular year was called the Year of Sadness with respect to the fact that he had lost both his uncle and wife in the same year and his grief was unimaginable and unfathomable.

What should one’s approach be when it comes to family despite the unending complications and trials one faces in this regard? This lecture clearly implores us that in order for us to seek Taqwa in Allah, it is of supreme importance and paramount that we take care of our family, no strings attached. Just as we are vigilant of the rights of Allah, so should we be aware and vigilant of the rights of the family.

Those who spend their night before their master in Sajdah and standing.
Those who pray to be avoided from Jahannam.
Those who don’t overspend and don’t be cheap with money.
Those who don’t call other God besides Allah, don’t kill anyone and don’t commit adultery.
Those who make Tawbah and stay in good way.
    Those who don’t witness falsehood.
Those who pass by a useless gathering in a dignified way.
Those who do not ignore the reminder.
Those who make dua to have ‘the coolness of their eyes’ from their family.
    Those who are patient.

Key points of interest in this impeccable lecture:

Just as the heavens and earth are obedient to Allah SWT, so is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
The Quran is like a life-giving water.
23 years of the Message of Allah given to the Prophet ﷺ helped transform the value system of individuals and society, thereby, leading to an incredible change in the world.
4 Names of Allah are mentioned here - Al-Malik (The King), Al Quddus (The Pure), Al Aziz (The Authority) and Al-Hakim (The Wise). The King who is Noble, Pure, The Authority commanding respect, The Wise are those Names that instantly connect with us and garner our attention. The first and the third inspire awe, the second and the fourth bring us closer to Allah.
4 tasks highlighted for the Prophet ﷺ - the power of the words of Allah, constant reminder leading to purification, the laws(finite), wisdom (infinite pursuit by reflection on the Quran).

An interesting point that is noteworthy and deserves a fair mention is that the 4 Names of Allah discussed above when superimposed on the 4 tasks handed over to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ helps in creating harmony and peace in the societies and the entire Muslim world. Exemplary and thought-provoking!

In this intense and thought-provoking lecture, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan shares an important reminder for ourselves and that which is often taken for granted. Lees meer

He tells us that in the Qur'an, after Allah telling us that we as a Muslim Ummah are brothers and behave sensibly so, the first instruction given to us succeeding that is that we as Muslims of one class and section of people should not make fun of the other section of the community. There are many dimensions of making fun and Ustadh deals with each of them perfectly.

When we make fun of someone thinking someone is your subordinate to you or make someone feel inferior, we are deviating from Islam and invite the wrath of Allah. One of the places that this behavior comes from is our notion of earning far superiorly than the rest.

Surah Ar-Rahman is a powerful wake-up call addressing all kinds of people, especially those exercising various degrees of disbelief. When it was revealed in Mecca, explains Nouman Ali Khan, Allah was talking specifically to the Quraish, who, despite having the greatest messenger, speaking to them in their own tongue, continued to mock and attack Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and desecrate the House of Allah. Yet even though Allah is angry at their consistent denial of all the incredible things their master has done for them, He addresses them as “ar-rahman”, the quintessence of mercy itself. This great surah is a reminder of our place in front of Allah. One day we shall perish without a trace while He, who owns glory and dignity, shall prevail. It is a reminder that our need for Him goes beyond petty, conscious requests for worldly things but that every breath we take and every heartbeat is a manifestation of his loving and caring mercy. Our ingratitude and forgetfulness of Allah’s gifts is the work of shaytan, the enemy in our invisible spiritual war, who can only be defeated through constant gratitude and remembrance of our master. When we pray do we pray and do it the way Allah deserves? Do we obey and respect as He is worthy? So how is that by giving us an impossible task, how does Allah make it successful? Why have we then been chosen for this task? The answer lies in the Ayat that says that the efforts and struggles one makes in the way of Islam with the constant motive to please Allah will definitely bear fruit and will garner a reward from Allah.

The commandments of our Deen should be followed only for the sake of Allah for it to have a lasting and fruitful impact in Dunya and Akhirah.
