144: Interview with Kai Hibbard
14 februari 2019 · 1 uur 7 min
Beluister deze afleveringWelcome back to Real Health Radio. Today’s guest interview is with Kai Hibbard. Lees meer
Kai Hibbard is a licensed social worker, author of the novel “Losing It”, body acceptance activist, and motivational speaker. When not providing individual and couples therapy, or publicly combating mass media hypocrisy and body shaming, she uses her voice to give presentations promoting body positivity and to shed light on the issues close to her heart.
Kai was first cast into the spotlight through her participation in, and subsequent denunciation of the weight loss game show The Biggest Loser. Going through the program, she realized the negative impact the show had, not only on her own life, but on society in general. Vowing to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. Kai has fought, often as the lone voice, against unrealistic and damaging message in the media regarding our bodies in general.
Drawing on experiences from her own journey as well as her education in psychology and social work; Kai explores living healthy and happy with her body in a society that inundates people with the message that she shouldn’t. Through well-researched and empirically backed discourse, she encourages people to think independently and critically about the messages they are being sent in the media. She urges people to be comfortable in their own skin, embrace who they are, and own the space they take up in the world with both the good and the bad that follows, knowing this to be the best first step towards a happier, healthier existence.

Rebroadcast: Cravings and Food Addiction
22 november 2018 · 35 min
Beluister deze afleveringI recently saw a meme created by Dr Mark Hyman that said “sugar is 8 times more addictive than cocaine”. Lees meer
It made me remember a scene from the documentary Food Matters. One of the interviewees was talking about how addictive sugar is. She made a comment along the lines of “giving kids sugar is like rolling up their sleeve and injecting them with heroin”.
This way of talking about food, particularly sugar and processed food, is becoming more common place. But is it true? Is sugar so addictive that when you have it you become powerless to its pull? Does eating fast food get you hooked like a heroin addict?
This week’s podcast is all about cravings and food addiction. It’s a topic I’m very passionate about because I think there are a lot of misconceptions around the idea. And not just with food addiction, but with drug addiction as well.

Rebroadcast: My Over Eating Experiment
29 maart 2018 · 1 uur 19 min
At the end of January I set myself a challenge. Every day, for a period of 12 weeks, I was going to eat a minimum of 3,200 calories per day. If was had room, I could eat more…and on some days I’d see just how high I could take it. (My highest day turned out to be just under 5,000 calories). Lees meer
According to online calculators I need 2,800 calories per day to maintain my weight, so eating 3,200 as a minimum meant I would be taking in a lot of extra food. Oh, and just so you know, it wasn’t going to be all “health” food. I was going to eat everything. This included lots of frozen pizzas, ready meals, trips to McDonald’s, KFC and a lot of wine.
This week’s episode of Real Health Radio is all about this over eating experiment, how it affected my weight, my symptoms and what happened once it was over. I then use this as a launch pad to talk about calories in and calories out, what are potential drivers for weight gain (or loss) and the relationship between weight and health.
